Henne starting week 5?
Here's what they've got to say:
[Note by bassman, 09/20/08 6:44 PM EDT ] Sorry, I completely forgot to add the link, and I've been moving furniture all day. It's from profootballweekly, http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL/AFC/AFC+East/Miami/WWHI/default.htm
Pennington's struggles open door for Henne to start
The Chad Henne era soon could be upon us in Miami. Sources in Miami tell us Chad Pennington is quickly losing the favor of the coaching staff, demonstrating none of the efficiency he played with in the preseason. Henne was drafted in the second round out of Michigan back in April to be the future of the franchise, and he deftly directed the offense on an 89-yard, 18-play touchdown drive on his only series in the loss to the Cardinals. "He made some throws that Pennington couldn’t dream of completing," one source said. Furthermore, numerous players have remarked about how Henne's confident demeanor in the huddle reminds them nothing of a rookie, as he shows poise beyond his years. Should Pennington struggle Sunday against the Patriots in Foxborough, we hear it’s likely the coaches will use their Week Four bye to prepare Henne for a Week Five start against the Chargers.
If that's the plan... I still don't know how I feel about it. Our passing offense might not be explosive, but it's ranked 14th in yards. I would love to see Henne at the helm, and I think it would help our rushing game too, since teams would have to be ready for deep passes.

IDK
So far from what I’ve seen from Henne, dude just does not get phased. He can go out and throw a pick 6 and come right back and stuff it down the throat of the D for a TD MiA. I think he will be alright…

i agree with you
he has to start some time, and whenever he plays he will be risking getting hurt. that’s called american football.

so there is some cache… i just wonder why the local guys wouldn’t have it first….
not sure
how I feel about this if it’s true…
yeah… Penny is KILLING the offense right now…. I’m suspect they would have been better off bringing Joey back to watch the store for a few games… but that is another matter.
So as everyone knows, I want to see Henne play most of this year… but i’m not sure if week 5 (game 4 is when i’d do it…)
yes SD defense pretty much doesn’t blitz right now and plays straight up… So it would be a good challenge for him to go in against without too many protection issues to deal with… plus its at home after the bye … so it’s an ideal point to get henne two weeks worth of study time and snaps to take over (cam are you still around???)
That said there are much softer points in the schedule to let henne take over (say week 10)… but on the flip side 3 of the next 4 are at home… but they are some of the tougher d’s on the schedule… houston/blt/buf …
i’d rather see Henne worked into the offense over those weeks with a planned take over date….
All that said… the reality is rookie or not Henne at QB give the team it’s best shot to win… his arm strenght will open up the running lanes for ricky and ronnie and maybe get T Ginn into the game with some throws more than 5 yards down the field.
not to brag
IF this is true……big big big IF there…Then I kinda saw this when the picked up Pennington. God bless him he is trying, but defenses just don’t respect the deep threat with him at the helm, which in turn, is clogging up the rest of the works.
I read this also, which kind of makes sense, http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2008/09/can-pennington.html. I don’t know if Armando is just being a stinkin thinker or if he really knows something, and why they, the Dolphins, can’t find a way to make it work between these two.
You knew they were going to stuff the box and make us beat them by passing going in. I’d hate to see good talent get tossed to the wolves and get chewed up never to recover, but, what say do we have? I’ve stated in other post what I think Henne’s roll should be. But, if goes in week 5, he gets my 100% support. This maybe a great thing…..it may be a disaster, but I’m sailing the same ship regardless.

well then
we were about the only two around here who were against the penny signing… i’ll go and dig up some of my posts from
back then if anyone doesn’t believe me…
of course penny is done… why else did the jets demote him last year and cut him this year… they just traded a second round pick for a 1-2 year stop gap (something only the dolphins and jets appear willing to do) why did they do that… they didn’t have an NFL QB on the roster…
as to the penny/ginn thing… Armando may be a lot of things but he usually puts acurate info out there… so i’ll go with it… and to it i’ll add … remember the jets game when pennington threw to ginn and tedd went behind the DB and penny expected him to undercut the DB… Simms made a big deal about ginn making a mistake… well i took that at face value… but it’s been sticking in my craw for a while now… i wish I had that game on tape because i’d like to see if T Ginn made the right read and if miami had a QB who could drop OVER the DB … teddy might have be gone for SIX… don’t know but its something that bothers me… Ginn caught the grief because of Simms but it might have been penny’s blown read.

I found what I wrote....
Chad Is Bad
He’s 32 coming off two seasons of injuries, just develop what we have into something, instead of watching him turn into nothing.

Henne not being ready now
isnt the concern I have because even though he would make those common rook mistakes he does give us the best chance to win and will do well whenever he comes in but at what cost?
Satele is getting owned,Smiley isnt playing too well,I realize Carey is at a different pos. this year but he isnt playing as good as last year at a supposed easier pos..Long is playing well for a rook and the one bright spot is gone for the year.
You might say that if he gets hurt then its the risk you take but why increase that risk with “the one” EVERYONE has been screaming for since the mighty Dan left for a couple of wins now?
I want to win now but not at the expense of Henne getting killed.

just a thought and a addon
too what you said firedan. Say Henne gets in there and he gets planted a few times because of the O line…..How will he react towards them, and will this make the O line get better? A qb that gets in their face and leads could be a great thing. If they just suck, don’t listen, and he continues to eat more dirt, then we could be in big trouble.

what i'm saying is
We need to find out what kind of LEADER is just as much as what kind of QB he’ll be. From what I’ve seen so far, I think he has the metal.

I know what youre saying
and I thought about that too but then I realized that if being the laughing stock of the League,1 win last year and not even resembling a Pro team now, isnt enough to get your ass fired up then I dont think Lombardi could inspire you.
This may sound suspect or even laughable to some but when I see him break the huddle and walk toward the line with that “Ok..who can I pick on now?” swagger, with seemingly NO negative anxiety whatsoever and that “Lets get down to business!” attitude,I know he has “it”.
My confidence in his ability to lead, produce, inspire others etc. goes without saying but my only concern again is that he will get decleated because he will stand in there like the better ones do until those routes develop, even if it means getting creamed, and our Line as of now will get him killed doing that and Im not saying hes too dumb to bail out Im just saying that he gives the Receivers EVERY chance to get open and trusts his line to afford him that time but our OL isnt to be trusted yet..eventually YES but just not yet.
I swear,,if he gets in there and gets hurt I will be so damned mad because my fears will come to pass and even if its a freak thing like stepping in a hole on the field,I will still blame it on starting him too early even though that would be silly..I just dont want that much potential getting hurt I guess.
FUNK IT..put his Ace in there tomorrow and pray my worst fears dont happen!

I am not....
I am not usually in favor of starting rookie quarterbacks and the stats show why…BUT..in every case there is an exception…this MAY (not proven yet) be a case. Some quarterbacks can jump up in the big league and do well..as I think Ryan will and I think..despite his division..Mr ex-Delaware will…Some Quarterbacks never will get used to the speed of the game and how accurate throws have to be..as well as the complexity of NFL defenses.
I have not been a Henne fan..but following college ball I have been very aware of his skills.
Henne played in a division that quickly showed the flaws of quarterbacks and to start as a freshman was not the norm. Henne has raw skills and instincts that can’t be taught and when he plays it shows. Despite facing some of the best defensive backs in FBS Henne was quite accurate…and he throws the second best deep ball..just behind Beck..LOL…. It may be the one thing (second thing..I think he is short also)that I didn’t like about him that may propel him to the top and that is his cockiness and arrogance.
He is also on the same level as alot of our players..just out of college.
My take….I think he has all the fundamentals to be just as effective as Penn. Plus he doesn’t get rattled as easy as Penn. and he is MUCH more of a deep threat…..
Play the man and let him mesh with the 1st offense…lets get him ready for the playoffs next year…..I have a dream….
Beafea
Henne
Looks like a grown-up man. He seems light years away from a typical rookie.
I like this. If Pennington plays poorly again I say pull the trigger. We’ll be patient with him, won’t we?
Oh…

agreed. i want to see more of henne.
he looked really good in the limited playing time he has seen so far.

the problem is...
The risk is either all or nothing…
If Henne starts and we win vs. SD, it will be a HUGE confidence boost not just to him but the whole team.
If we lose…it could give Henne John Beck Syndrome…
