Well it's finally time to strap it on and play some football. We've already talked about some of the things we should all keep an eye on. So now there's nothing left to do but sit back and enjoy some football. And then second-guess any decisions that were made once the game is over, of course!
So use this thread for any and all live game discussion. I'm not sure how much I'll be around in this thread for this game. But my plan will be to do a "quick hits" post sometime tonight/tomorrow morning to quickly share some thoughts on the game and then post a longer summary on Sunday night/Monday morning with some more involved thoughts.

Guys, this is pretty exciting
Today will mark the last day that we as fans will know so little about our team. So much is new yet there is a big reason for optimism. I haven’t been this excited for the Dolphins in a long time. Honestly, last year I couldn’t care less about any preseason games and now its killing me that I can’t watch it live. LOL! GO Dolphins!

Not as important as it seemed 2 days ago
When this was a competition to be starter. Now it’s two guys just trying not to be cut. I feel for them both – they couldn’t have seen this coming. They probably hate Favre even more than we do after all that mess. Beck hasn’t got a fair chance, and McCown probably thought this was his last big chance. He was all pumped up to play against his little bro tonight, now he might not play and might get cut on top of it. That’ll make for an akward family meal. We tend not to have too much sympathy for McCown, but I do feel for him a little.
My question is this: What is success for our QBs tonight?
Let’s say only two play, and we run 50% pass and 50% running plays. That’s around 30 passing plays, or 15 plays each. What will you be looking for?
For me I want to see
- accurate throwing
- no turnovers
- at least 50% completion – I won’t count blantant drops (god knows there’ll be a couple)
- a couple of good completions downfield (10+ yard throws; checkdowns won’t cut it all the time)
- leads the team to at least one touchdown scoring drive (doesn’t have to throw the TD himself)
If Henne, Beck or McCown manages that after this poor camp so far I’ll take it as progress and be impressed. How about you?

People seem so determined to think that Beck has been awful the past 2 weeks when clearly he’s done better this week?

Well...
Dude, there’s a story on the front page of this site saying Beck may have only 2 weeks to perform or he’s cut. No one would be hugely surprised if he was. Those two things alone tell me something.
They just brought in Penny due in part to what they’ve seen from Beck and McCown so far. Any encouraging reports about Beck were of the ‘well, he’s not as horrible as yesterday’ ilk. I think it’s safe to say he’s been bad. If you disagree, you can at least accept that he needed to be very, very good to win this job and he didn’t manage it.

Anyway I think it would not be a smart move to put all your eggs in one basket by just grooming Henne. Its better to see what they both have instead of just keeping a vet around with no future in this league.

I think the tricoaches knew Thursday night that Dolphins were going after Pennington and that McCown was going to be released. They knew Pennington was not going to be ready to play tonight so they scheduled Beck and Henne to split the time. OR, they have decided to keep Mccown and release Beck and show case him tonight for trade purposes. I really do not thlink the latter is the case because the tricoaches want to have Pennington to mentor both the rookie and the near rookie. I would think that the Dolphins would want to give John and Chad Henne as many reps as possible between now and the end of TC because Pennington is going to demand as many reps as he can get between now and the end of TC to get familiar with the system and the Dolphin players.

Also I think it’s funny that we get more comments on preseason games than some other sites do for playoff games. Matty’s built a nice community here.

I noticed the delay earlier, I closed everything out to see if it would update, but that’s just the way it is.
The Phinsider is probably the most active SB nation blog. I frequent a few other football teams but none is as active as this one is. And besides, we are the most loyal fans.

The corners seem to be playing off the recievers to not allow the big play. That is why the Bucs keep driving because they just go up, stop, and turn around. They seem to be doing it all day.

After all that excitement
A 3-point half on offence. But there was lots to take from the half anyway in my opinion.
2nd half prediction – a Henne touchdown. Phins lose 17 – 10. (Hey it’s preseason, we don’t care.)
Can’t wait to hear what you all made of this, especially those who could watch the line play on TV. They don’t mention the lines on radio.
Anyway it’s 2am here in Dublin so I’m done. Hopefully the phins take care of business.

i agree, we can all armchair quarterback, but this is preseason...more like proving grounds for the newbies...

QB Race after this performance...
Pennington – Purely on reputation
Henne – Looked confident and at least got some points on the board
Beck – Nothing good, nothing bad. Played with first teamers, made 1 or 2 good throws, but again, nothing special. He did nothing to win or lose a spot.
McClown – Against 3rd TEAMERS?? He was an absolute joke considering he has started more games than the other 2 QB’s combined who played tonight in this league. Don’t give me that crap he didn’t expect to play, etc. Backups never know when they will get in the game and need to always be ready. He looked awful, he looked like the rookie.
Right now in my eyes, he is the odd man out and has to shine to win keep his spot on this team/

I think you will see Pennington starting soon, followed closely by Henne to see what he can do. he looked the most promising of the 3 in there tonight. At least it looks like Beck has learned to hold onto the ball for the most part. (Which is good, maybe he can manage the game in the case of an emergency.)

Again, he played on the Cardinals for goodness sakes… He is used to playing without an O-Line, etc. He was brought in here to be a started and was SUPPOSED to be mobile and could make plays with his legs…

The only bad things were our run d during the 2 minute drill and coverage in general, mccown, and special teams.
