Dolphins active on waiver wire; claim London, Garner, and Alleman
**UPDATE 3:50 pm** Here's the official story from MD.com. To make room for the 3 players claimed off waivers, the Dolphins waived Rob Ninkovich and Trey Darilek, to go along with Anthony Armstrong. They also placed 5 players onto their practice squad: Jayson Foster, Daren Heerspink, Lex Hilliard, Will Billingsley, and Matthew Mulligan. The Dolphins still have 3 spots free. I'd expect Armstrong to get one of those spots if he does clear waivers. And I'll be honest and say that I'm surprised Ninkovich got released over Quentin Moses. Moses didn't show me much this preseason. [end update]
The Dolphins have already put in claims on three players who were waived yesterday.
First off, the Dolphins claimed WR Brandon London off waivers from the Giants. London is a 6'4, 210 pound receiver who spent all of 2007 on the Giants' practice squad. And he was about to sign another deal to be placed onto New York's practice squad yet again when his agent called him and told him the Dolphins have claimed him off waivers. Says London about being claimed by Miami:
"Everybody in the (Giants') locker room thought I knew some kind of inside info and everything, but I was just saying that I like South Beach joking around. It's funny how it really happened like that."
"I'm beyond fired up. (The Dolphins) asked me if I'd be ready to practice tomorrow. I was like, 'I'm ready right now. Soon as I get off the plane.'"
I love the kid's excitement and enthusiasm. Let's see how he does once he gets down here, though. For the record, in the '08 preseason, London had 4 catches for 40 yards - all during their final game last Thursday against the Patriots. To make room for him, the Dolphins waived Anthony Armstrong - who is likely going to be placed on the practice squad once he clears waivers.
The Dolphins also claimed OL Andy Alleman. Alleman was a 2007 3rd round pick of the New Orleans Saints. He measures in at 6'4, 302 pounds. I don't know too much about him, so anyone who knows more can inform us below. Interesting to note, though, that both the Patriots and Jets also put in waiver claims for him. So he must have some potential!
The Dolphins also signed Nate Garner, a 6'7, 318 pound monster who the Jets drafted in the 7th round of last April's draft. Garner is listed as a guard, but started 13 games at right tackle last season for Arkansas. So perhaps he could be a guy who could provide depth at tackle behind Jake Long and Vernon Carey.
So that means as of right this minute, the Dolphins have to cut 2 more players to get down to 53 players. Any ideas who?

Chad Jackson
the patsies releasae 2006 2nd round draft pick WR Chad Jackson out of Florida. I remember the Dolphins took a close look at him back then. Maybe we’ll bring him in for a looksie.

I wouldn't count on that
The Dolphins could have, but chose London over him. And Jackson is too injury prone.

Alleman
According to PFT, Arizona, Denver, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New England and the New York Jets claimed Alleman off waivers, so he was pretty much sought after. Sounds like a solid grab at a position of need.

I hate this time of year
Cut down to 53…..you root for a guy watch him all summer then he’s cut for a guy I know nothing about…….I do trust this FO but I still dont like it…..with that being said that kid from the giants i have a feeling Ireland has been watching for two years hoping they tried to sneak him on the practice squad again…….I bet this kid is getting playing time by week 3……

Andy Alleman
Last year, I distinctly rememember he was in “Draft Digest” – he was profiled in “Small School Spotlight” usually reserved for those players that play exceptionally well but get ignored by the more well-known schools.
Here’s what Street and Smith wrote:
6’4" 300 lbs. 40 yd. 5.1 – College – Akron DOB 11/20/83
College – In 2002, began career in Pittsburgh, playing in all 12 games as defensive end as a true freshman. 12 games as a sophmore, recording eight tackles and two tackles for a loss. In 2004, transferred to Akron and did not play due to NCAA transfer requirements. Missed spring practice with a lower leg injury in 200r. Started 12 of 13 games at right guard as a junior and all 12 there as a senior.
Strengths – Athletic. Gets off the ball and into setup quickly. Stays low and maintains leverage. Bends at the knees. Decent hand-punch. Good hand placement. Able to slide laterally. Understands angles and positioning. Smooth change of directions. Stays under control and maintains balance. Avoid overextending. Shows good blitz awareness and recognition. Able to pull and trap. Agile, able to work in space on the second level. Durable, will play hurt.
Concerns – Limited experience. Still learning the position after moving from the defensive line in 2005. Will need to add strength. Does not create much movement.
Bottom Line – A hard-working guy who is still learning the position. He is agressive and very strong in the upper body, but doesn’t have the technique to take full advantage of his strength. Alleman moves well and will sacrifice his body to get the job done. “Good effort guy who appears to have a future because he wants it so badly,” says an NFC personnel analyst.
Pro Football Weekly: To sum it up, they wrote: “Followed former Pittsburgh offensive coordinator J.D. Brookhart to Akron in 2004 and moved from the defensive line to offensive guard upon his arrival. Is still very raw and learning the position and has a ways to go before he becomes as good as he thinks he is. A better athlete than football player, Alleman is most-suited for a zone-blocking scheme like the Broncos.”
Sporting News wrote: Strengths – Is competitive and works hard. Can reach linebackers and deliver a solid initial blow. Holds his ground against straight-line rushers. Can reset and anchor when jolted backward. Eliminates blockers on seal blocks. Weaknesses – Is small. Is stiff and limited athletically. Does not use his hand punch aggressively and lacks quickness off the snap. Stops moving his feet and falls off blocks. Bottom Line – Alleman must add bulk and work on his balance. He does not project as a starter.

Ninkovich -
Very upset he got release. He’s much better and quicker than Moses. Too bad he’s not qualified for the PS. Someone is going to scoop him up. I was hoping there would be a place for him.

ninkovich
yea me too i really thought he showed enough to warrant a roster spot, and like matty i was surprised that q moses got the nod instead of rob. oh well what do i know i just hope he doesn’t go to any of the afc east teams especially the pats. which has a habit of picking up dolphin players and making them into stars.

Armstrong waiver
jvw: I think the Dolphins thought that no one would pick up a Arena Footlball player off the waiver wire so they took a chance to see if this Brandon London was as good as they thought he was. Sure enough no one picked up Armstrong and the Dolphins put him on the PS. He is still not safe there but if London doesn’t work out all the Dolphlins have to do is Activate Armstrong and they got their look see for nothing?
