Final 53-man Roster Predictions
We're now just hours away from the 4 pm eastern deadline mandated by the league for teams to have their roster down to 53 players. So let's try to predict what the Dolphins roster might look like come Saturday night. And when doing so, keep in mind that the Dolphins do have first dibs on any player that gets placed on waivers (basically, any player that is cut and has 4 or fewer years of experience). But the waiver process takes about 48 hours, meaning those moves won't become official until Monday. Therefore, what the roster looks like on Saturday night likely isn't what it will look like next week. And Monday also is the day teams can begin filling out their practice squads.
So without further ado, below is my projected 53-man roster:
| QB | RB | FB | WR | TE | OL |
| Chad Pennington | Ricky Williams | Boomer Grigsby | Ted Ginn | Anthony Fasano | Jake Long |
| Chad Henne | Ronnie Brown | Derek Hagan | David Martin | Justin Smiley | |
| John Beck | Jalen Parmele | Davone Bess | Justin Peelle | Samson Satele | |
| Patrick Cobbs | Greg Camarillo | Donald Thomas | |||
| Ernest Wilford | Vernon Carey | ||||
| Ike Ndukwe | |||||
| Trey Darilek | |||||
| Shawn Murphy | |||||
| Matt Spanos | |||||
| DL | LB | CB | S | ST | |
| Vonnie Holliday | Channing Crowder | Will Allen | Yeremiah Bell | Dan Carpenter | |
| Jason Ferguson | Akin Ayodele | Andre Goodman | Jason Allen | Brandon Fields | |
| Kendall Langford | Joey Porter | Michael Lehan | Chris Crocker | John Denney | |
| Phillip Merling | Matt Roth | Nathan Jones | Renaldo Hill | ||
| Randy Starks | Charlie Anderson | Joey Thomas | |||
| Rod Wright | Reggie Torbor | ||||
| Paul Soliai | Quentin Moses | ||||
| Edmond Miles | |||||
| Rob Ninkovich |
Last 5 On: Paul Soliai, Patrick Cobbs, Joey Thomas, Edmond Miles, Rob Ninkovich
First 5 Off: Sean Ryan, Reagan Mauia, Lex Hilliard, Anthony Armstrong, Lionel Dotson
Next 5 Off: Titus Brown, Junior Glymph, Will Billingsley, Mike Byrne, Jayson Foster
You'll notice now that I have 9 linebackers making the team. And that's a product if the Dolphins not keeping 4 QBs - following the Josh McCown trade - as well as keeping only 4 safeties, which is pretty much a sure bet now with Keith Davis now gone.
Ninkovich has played well the past 2 weeks and has earned a spot on the roster. Miles, too, has been involved in some positive plays. His special teams contributions also keep him on this roster for now.
So that's how my 53-man roster prediction looks - at least until Monday. And while I'm at it, I'll take a stab at naming the possible practice squad players (from Miami's roster): Anthony Armstrong, Lex Hilliard, Lionel Dotson, Pedro Sosa, Jayson Foster, Will Billingsley, and Anthony Toribio.
So have at it. Make your picks. Who makes it? Who doesn't?

going the wrong direction???
peele will be cut… now he may resign at a smaller contract, but there is no way they are keeping a 3rd string TE at 1.4 million (if he does make the team – i’ll start the Beck is a fin forever fan club with you) Ryan’s td catch gets him past the cuts
9 linebackers and 9 OL wont survive the cuts (granted I DO think the will grab someone off waivers or sign a FA to shore up the line after the cuts) my guess is spanos is gone? and ninkovich. in their place add armstrong (if they do try to get him to the practice squad it will be part of the post cut additions/drops) and a 5th safety bryan…
couple of who knows points… I think Beck will go if they get their 4th 5th round offer. I think its possible that dotson makes the team and miles goes if ninkovich isn’t still around….
and for extra S’es and grins… look for some report that soliai baddly stubbed his toe or pulled his hammy today (friday) and has to go on IR so the team can sign some veteran free agent… and thomas’s head aches may also require a long stay on the IR for a CB if the team likes him also….

forgot to mention
the reason why i’m sure they’ll keep 5 safeties is 2 of them are coming off of major injuries and you don’t know how they’ll hold up as the season progresses, plus they make good STers.

2 Draft picks not to make team
I know this is really nitpicking, but I think its a tad ridiculous that two draft picks probably aren’t going to make this team. Lionel Dotson and Lex Hilliard, it would appear, will both be waived. Sure, you would think “Ok, these guys will end up on the practice squad, no big deal.” But will they both clear waivers? I’m not so sure that either of them will. They are both probably on other teams’ radars simply because they were drafted by Parcells. Is it nitpicking that a 6th and 7th round pick won’t make our team? I really don’t think so. I don’t think we were a good enough team last season (clearly) that it would be that hard for all our draft picks to make the team. The Chiefs won three more games than we did last season, and all of their draft picks will either be on the 53 man roster or PUP, most likely, to start the season. We are not a good enough team that we can afford to be completely wasting draft picks, even if they ARE sixth and seventh round picks. I’m not asking for gems like Marques Colston or Jarrod Page in the 7th round, but they should at least be making the team.

well you might have your gem
just look to the 6th rounder starting at RG….
but I do agree with you dotson has a shot to make the team…. as to miami vs KC …. well KC is just plain awful and its not surprising that their entire draft makes the team… the reality is most players past the 4th round don’t last a season.

Agreed
All they are trying to find the diamond in the rough… with lots of late round picks!

So if we waive a player
and he is not picked up by Monday, and we put him on our practice squad. Can another team take him (w/o compensation) off our practice squad at any point during the season if they have an injury and offer him a spot on their 53 man roster? Or are these players locked our practice squad till next season? How does that work?

You have it right but...
At the point that another team offers a practice squad player a deal, that player usually lets his current team know. The current team can then offer a spot on their roster. The player can choose where he goes though. A few years ago, a Dolphin’s practice squad player just left for another team – Didn’t even give the Dolphins a chance to counter-offer. The coach was a little miffed.

That Looks A Lot Like Mine
Except mine was done earlier this week and had Rinaldo Hill getting cut for Keith Davis.
I guessed the John Beck staying part. I think Beck will eventually be traded but the patience in getting something for McCown and therefore creating more value in Beck is just another of the clear differences between this regime and others.
The guy that has surprised me the most (outside of Roth) is Ninkovich. The guy really has proven to be a versatile player. I will be shocked if he doesn’t make the team.

I like it..
I only disagree that Lionel Dotson is on and Q. Moses is out.
