53-man Roster Bubble Watch

Well here we are just days away from the final cut-down date.  And the players on the "bubble" will have one final chance to impress the coaching staff on Thursday night in New Orleans.  We'll talk more about that game over the next 2 days.  But for now, I present my final 53-man roster in the same form that I have been all month long.  Check it out below and then tell us all your thoughts.

**And be sure to get involved with our community projection for Chad Pennington, which will end later today.**

Star-divide

QB RB FB WR TE OL
Chad Pennington Ricky Williams Boomer Grigsby Ted Ginn Anthony Fasano Jake Long
Chad Henne Ronnie Brown Derek Hagan David Martin Justin Smiley

Josh McCown Patrick Cobbs Ernest Wilford Donald Thomas
Greg Camarillo Vernon Carey
Ike Ndukwe
Trey Darilek
Shawn Murphy

DL LB CB S ST

Jason Ferguson Akin Ayodele Andre Goodman Jason Allen Brandon Fields
Kendall Langford Joey Porter Michael Lehan Chris Crocker John Denney
Phillip Merling Charlie Anderson Nate Jones Keith Davis
Randy Starks
Reggie Torbor Joey Thomas Renaldo Hill
Paul Soliai
Matt Roth
Rod Wright
Quentin Moses

Last 5 On: Rod Wright, Quentin Moses, Renaldo Hill, Ernest Wilford, Patrick Cobbs
First 5 Off: Justin Peelle, Rob Ninkovich, Anthony Armstrong, Reagan Mauia, Edmond Miles
Next 5 Off: Lex Hilliard, Titus Brown, Junior Glymph, Jayson Foster, Pedro Sosa

First, let me start by saying that I think that keeping 4 quarterbacks is a luxury that this team - where it is now - can't afford.  But I think this staff is going to actually do it - at least until the injury bug his Miami.  At that time, it simply won't make much sense for them to do it.

The one big change I made over last week's version is that I have Renaldo Hill now making the team, essentially taking the roster spot vacated by Edmond Miles - who I think is one of the final cuts.  I think that the emergence of Matt Roth at linebacker allows this team to keep one less linebacker.  And when you run a 3-4, you need more outside linebackers than inside ones - unfortunately for Miles.

I also still have Sean Ryan beating out Justin Peelle for that 3rd TE roster spot.  Neither have done enough to set themselves apart and Ryan is a cheaper option - it's that simple.  Unless Peelle really stands out in New Orleans, I think his $1.3 million salary in 2008 will cause him to lose his job.

As far as the practice squad goes, it's hard to predict who will be placed there because other teams can step in and scoop up those players placed there.  I also think that we're going to see many more moves by this front office in terms of the bottom 10 or 15 players on the 53-man roster as well as the practice squad.  But if I had to guess, I'd say these players will initially land on Miami's practice squad: Jayson Foster, Anthony Armstrong, Pedro Sosa, Mike Byrne, Lex Hilliard, Titus Brown, and Will Billingsley.

So let's hear your thoughts below...

how bad is the bottom of this roster

it’s pretty sad when there is only maybe 3 or 4 places I can challenge your final roster…. everything else is pretty obvious…

so here are my niggles… Armstrong makes the team
(no FB do since they’ll use martin and/or ryan back there depending on the situation)

something tells my they’ll carry all six safeties so add bryan
and axe rod wright (who won’t survive the post cut additions anyways) or put porter on the PUP? (would they?)

and I did forget to watch…. did they try anyone else as the LSer against KC? I know early in camp they were getting somepeople work there and I have few doubts that they would like to have more utility out of denney’s spot??

but otherwise good job as always matty…

plus i just don’t see them having 4 qb’s on the roster when they kick off vs the jets…. (yes they may have 4 after the cuts though)

QB: Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Josh McCown.
Last one out: John Beck.

WR: Derek Hagan, Ted Ginn Jr., Ernest Wilford, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess.
Last one out: Anthony Armstrong. A lock for the eight-man practice squad.

OL: Vernon Carey, Samson Satele, Justin Smiley, Jake Long, Donald Thomas, Trey Darilek, Shawn Murphy, Matt Spanos, Ikechuku Ndukwe.
Last one out: Daren Heerspink.

Last one out: Lionel Dotson. Dotson is headed to the practice squad.

LB: Channing Crowder, Akin Ayodele, Joey Porter, Matt Roth, Reggie Torbor, Charlie Anderson, Edmond Miles, Quentin Moses.
Last one out: Rob Ninkovich.

I don’t think they keep 4 QBs. The either keep an extra LB, or an extra WR.

I don't think Quentin Moses is going to make it...

He can’t “set the edge” and he looks winded even now after the off-seaso n program. He’s out even though we may be thin there.

the only reason i have him there is that I think they will keep that many LBs

and he will stay until someone better comes along. he has pretty good potential and may develop.

My take

Josh McCown is off for sure.
I believe in Peele. So I say he is on. However it could turn out that we trade Peele or Martin in the middle of the season. I am still young as a football fan, but what exactly isn’t Mauia doing?

by Beck4Mercy on Aug 27, 2008 4:42 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mauia isn't setting himself apart from Grigsby...

…but Grigsby is a special team stud and Mauia doesn’t contribute on ST.

don't forget

those hands of stone….
if you are going to keep a FB who will only be on the field for 5-15 plays a game he better have the ability to make plays (ie catch the ball as a relief option) and Mauia has real issues there.

The Practice Squad

One thing I do not understand so someone of great knowledge, please
provide information. One’s practice squad – do those players with Miami
HAVE TO LEAVE to go to other teams that want them or can they choose
to stay in Miami?

by Cutie on Aug 27, 2008 8:41 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not really forced

They get paid a lot more to be on the active roster versus practice squad.

From Wiki Answers:

Rookies and first-year players $285,000

As of 2006, the pay was $4,700 per week for the 17 weeks of the season. (about $85,000) Practice squad players do not receive fringe benefits like the roster players…

I think practice quad players are making under 100K

really matty?

4 quarterbacks? not gonna happen. never. Beck is traded or released. Parcells said just the other day he prefers his 3rd string to be a vet. Beck has like 12 snaps in his career.

I think moses looks good….looked really tall and fast.

lex hillard makes the team for special teams no doubt. all the draft picks, sans shawn murphy, will make the team i think.

i agree on the armstrong camarillo spot….as of today. i think both can make it if armstrong has a nice game. camarillos big tackle made him a lock i think…too good on special teams.

Its Sunday afternoon.....do you know where your beer is?

yeah........

that scares me.

You let LexHillard…a draft pick of yours….go to another team? its like they drafted him then!!!

no way that MIA only keeps 3 ILBs

with this projection you have 4 QBs and only 1 backup for 2 ILB spots. not happening. Miles makes it over Beck…let it go, dude.

Cuts

Edmond Miles should make this team.

Bubble Watch

MattI: I don’t think they will keep 4 QBs. Beck will stay McCown will go. I think we are not going to determine the bottom of the roster until after the NO game and after they finish pulling from the waiver wire this next week. It seems pointless to argue over the last 3 or 4 spots until we see what happens next week, especially after the game tomorrow night.
Otherwise your roster picks look good to me.

I’m feeling more confident they will keep Beck and let McCown walk. The only scenario I can see where this would change is if they get a solid offer for Beck, but I don’t see that happening, nor them cutting or trading Beck for peanuts.

So that’s a good thing. 2 young promising QBs and a good vet are far better than one young QB a good QB and a bad QB. Other teams, like Green bay, are keeping 2 young guys too, so it’s no big deal. Besides, Beck might be a better option than McCown at backup QB right now anyway.

Just getting back -

to my computer and I want to thank those (Left Coast Fin Phan and Donphin) for providing me with that information regarding the practice squad. I never understood it partly because I never asked about it before. I just read who was on the team and that’s it – not its purpose. Thank you both.
