How did you become a Dolphan?
Me? I moved down here (to S. FL) from N.C. with my family when I was 2 years old (In 1972). And of course my grandfather and uncles jumped on the 72 dolphins bandwagon and eventually became Die hard fins fans. The funny thing they always tried to get me to watch football and the fins and I wanted no part of it at least until I turned 15. One day my uncle got me to sit down and watch the Dolphins play and got me watching this fairly new QB who had an arm like a cannon and I just sat there in utter astonishment about how great this QB was (Everybody knows who that was) and Ive been hooked ever since.
Ive noticed that there are alot of fans out of state and I would bet alot of you would have alot of crazy and or interesting stories on what made you become a fan of the best damn sports franchise in the world. Me I just got lucky.

Great Question
Well since I was a little kid I always loved Dolphins, the ocean ect.. My dad was a big Redskins fan so football was on every sunday. I remember a 1982 or 83 game where the Dolphins played the Redskins and my dad said something like ‘’Skins are gunna kick the fishes butt’’. Well, I clung to the Dolphins. Dolphins lost that game but from then on I was a Dolphin and my dad and I enjoyed many years of rivalry. Dad passed away a few years ago but I will always miss our football conversations.. Go fish. /sad
Parents
Went to the U. Grew up a huge Dolphins/Marino fan in Rhode Island. Which was easy because the Patriots were always terrible…
It all started...
I think in 2004 (I was 14 or 13). Directv sent some nfl sunday ticket with all the teams. My brother said I have to pick a team so I picked the saints (i didn’t like football). I didn’t know what I was doing. This was the year before (or maybe two) they selected Reggie Bush, so whatever year that was to be exact. At the end of the season, I think it was something about Bush being too popular and I didn’t want to be associated with the ’Aints anymore and I think we got another chart with all the teams and I picked the dolphins.
Much of that may be false, but close to the truth, all I know I was at one point an ’Aints fan for 1 season or less and some how became a dolphan (dolfan as I always had thought it was spelled.).
Born and raised in South Florida
Was a member of the Big Brothers Org in ’72 and all the Dolphins were big into helping out. I went to a picnic and got to meet and play ball with most of the ’72 squad. I was 10. Been a fan ever since. Still have all their autographs on my old Fins hat.

Cool thread...
Well it was March of 1971 and a big baby boy was born to a household of Miami Locals who with good intentions championed the Home Team…with a bit of devotion to the team of their youth the steelers. It was a cloudy morning and the big baby boy was taken from the hospital to the home he would grow up in and placed in the crib which fortunately was adorned by a precient uncle with Miami Dolphins sheets and the rest is History! Get to go to pre-school and meet a cool kid named Maceo who turns out to be Big Baby Boy’s best friend till 9th grade and going to his house and finally meeting his dad the legendary number 22 Mercury Morris cemented a lifetime fan right where he should be, watching every game like it was life itself! Living and dying with the team over the next 30 or so years has been a working devotion of love and respect and hate…(yes CAM CAM I am TALKING ABOUT YOU!!) Seeing Bob Greisie at the hardware store from time to time and being tossed in the air by Kim Bokamper probably helped as well.
i moved
around a lot in the midwest and didnt have a specific team to call my own. when i turned 10 i started getting involved in and interested in sports. in 1986 dan marino came to the dolphins and started throwing strikes to duper and clayton an took them to the super bowl and after watching those three rip it up i was instantly a dolfan. have been ever since.
My father's best friend back in the day
was from South Florida born and raised, and every summer we’d visit him in Coral Springs. He pulled me aside one day early on and indoctrinated me.
I’ll never forget my first live game of any kind, Miami football played the way it should be: Joe Robbie on a dark, rainy night. The game itself was atrocious, we lost to the Bears 6-3 in a field goal festival, but the crushing feeling in my gut was revelatory. I would love this team. After that, the prospect of getting my grubby fingers on one of his season tickets once a year soon supplanted The Magic Kingdom as Florida’s #1 tourist attraction.
Looking back now, I’m beginning to consider the possibility that the man had brainwashed me. See, he also found time to school me on FSU, his alma mater. I do believe, to this day, I am the only six year old Egyptian kid ever to inexplicably bust out the Tomahawk Chop at recess.

i can't remember the actual...
.. moment as i was painfully young, [4 yrs old?] but i can remember innocently asking my dad how the dolphins did this year and him replying ‘they didnt lose any’… i thot, " hmmm, … well that seems pretty good…." lol
All the thanks go to my cousin
My entire family is from Pennsylvania and my one cousin got hooked on some Pittsburgh product named Dan Marino. Now this cousin wasn’t a Dolphins fan but he idolized Marino. He had all types of Marino stuff in his room and, apparently, when I was younger I shunned my fathers team of choice (the Cowboys) to be more like my cousin, the Marino fan. Except I didn’t grab the player, I grabbed the team. I have been a Miami Dolphins fan as long as I can remember. I’d say since I was 4 or 5. There are pictures of me when I was younger than that in Cowboys clothing because of my father. Then all of a sudden I am in teal and orange and the rest is history. I’ve been a ‘phin fan for well over 15 years now. And I tell people with pride, despite never living in Florida or having any other reason for adopting the team other than my cousin’s obsession with Marino.
John Beck
Never really followed pro football until I started playing fantasy football. Still never had a team to root for. Miami drafted John Beck so I thought I would give them a try. I really started to enjoy following this team, especially on this site. Yet I am not sure that I have followed long enough to be very emotionally invested. And if John is traded or cut I might not care enough any more.
Sure that may sound fickle or not fan-like. But keep in mind that I am more a John Beck fan that was just beginning to be a Miami Dolphins fan. I hope they keep him and use him (not holding my breath) because I think the Dolphins are on the right track. I have a lot of respect for true fans and know what that feels like, the joy of winning and the anguish of losing. I hope that I have the chance to be a true Miami Dolphins fan, a Dolphan.
I though you will
star making Ducks jokes!! LOL
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(21 years and counting)
You know me!!
Just be yourself and try to have a life LOL
Ps I know you didn’t got that joke either
BTW what happen with the post you put a couple of days ago, it was bane so quickly?
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(21 years and counting)
This may sound odd, but...
… it is all because of the Ace Ventura movie. I was like, 6 at the time and I fell in love with the movie. All of my other friends became Cowboy and Patriot fans, but I have stuck with them through thick and thin. Thank you Jim Carey!
"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt
I was born in 1980...
and by the time of 6 or 7 that’s when I started to really like football. I live in Baltimore and by that time the Colts were gone. I truly believe that even if the Colts were around I would have still ended up a Dolphan. It was destiny! Ever since then I’ve been a die hard fan. Around Baltimore there’s alot of fans of different teams but now after 2000, there’s alot of bandwagon Raven fans. I still have pictures I drew of Marino and Mark Clayton from back in 1988 through 1990.

Are you in the Miami area Rz? And have you been your entire life? If so, I can relate in a NCAA way…..here when you are born, they slap you on the ass and say “Go Big Red”. Me being a redhead….pissed on the nurse and cried the first 3 notes of “There is no place like Nebraska”

My first memory
My first honest memory was Super Bowl VI against the Cowboys. I was 7 years old. I tried to catch everything “Dolphin” from that day. You have no idea how tuff it was being out of state, before the internet and Direct TV, which I’ve stated in other blogs. Walking around the house with an AM radio, hoping to get that static ridden station that was carrying the game to come in is just one of the stories I have. I am “diehard” about my Dolphins. In time, I was able to see the Dolphins live in different venues as well as two great trips too Miami. One in which, staying at the Don Shula country club, was able to meet the likes of Don Shula, Dan Marino, Jim Jensen, T.J. Turner as well as various coaches. It was a pilgramage. Maybe someday I’ll blog this story. It was almost an act of God how it happened.
I live in Coral Springs, Fl
about 30 min from the stadium. My mother was born in Nebraska…so i know the big red love well…been to Nebraska many times.
My dad went to Ohio State…i was born in there…then he went to UM…so i moved down here really young. I grew up a Canes and Dolphins fan….but then i went to FLORIDA STATE?!! so now im confussed NCAA wise…im torn.
Dolphins…always been easy….like the brother i never had.
Its Sunday afternoon.....do you know where your beer is?

Honest to god..
I was born a Dolphin…my mother who was pregnant at the time went to a dolphin game with my father…
they told me somewhere around the 2nd quarter her contractions became closer and closer and she knew she was going to have the baby (even though i was due another week or so)
so they were taken to a nearby hospital by some in-stadium medical staff…dad told me i was born before the game ever finished
So idk what it was but im a dolphin fan for life

Full-blooded Dolphins fan, who doesn’t like the term Dolphan. It sounds cheesy.
My first word was “Shula.”
My first full sentence was, “Marino to Clayton… Touchdown!”

Great stories
It was 1969 and I was 4 years old and my cousin Drew, three days younger than me,was glued to the TV watching Miami play when we went to visit them one Sunday and it was on after that.
I’ve cried, kicked TV’s,puked and everything in between for the last 38 years over the Dolphins and God Bless my precious Momma(Santa Claus) for all the coats, banks, lamps, sweatshirts, stickers, hats, helmets, flags etc.etc.etc .
Thanks and KMA Drew..you’re responsible for a lot of joy AND pain in my life :)

All this reminiscing
brings up an image rarely challenged on the unintentional comedy scale.
Spin-off question: Growing up, did anyone else have a pair of those gawd-awful early nineties zebra pattern sweatpants in team colors? The entire line was ludicrous, to say the least, but the aqua/teal made them look straight theatrical.
I used to rock ‘em like nobody’s business though.
by rococo davenport on Aug 26, 2008 2:21 PM EDT reply actions
Zubaz
was the company that made them……I had lots…..every year they had a new pattern. So, until they went out, like blue-jean shorts with the pockets showing, I rocked them as well. Zubaz had tons of stuff for a time there.

Zubaz!
hahaha, classic.
“HuskerDolphin is sporting the latest in nineties football fan apparel. Tucked into his Air Max ’94s are a smart pair of Zubaz team color sweatpants, topped off with a casual Russell Athletic tee emblazoned with a nameless caricatured player in uniform riding a Dolphin. To complete the look? A bold Starter cap with a meticulously flexed brim. Dashing.”

you had me at Zubaz.......
other than that…….you were pretty much off mark. What the hell are Air Max’s? Never did like starter……their brim couldn’t be meticulously brimmed like I liked it…..I always wanted to wear my hat like Jim Jensen. Just curious….were you sporting Zubaz underoos during this same time period?

hehe...
They were a pair of mad popular Nikes from that era, Charles Barkley’s signature shoe at the time.
Sadly, no Zubaz underoos. But I swear, I can’t remember seeing a single football fan back in the day under the age of 18 who wasn’t dressed exactly how I described. Maybe it was just me. Unfortunate, ’twas…

ok this is kinda lame
but when i was a little liltte kid I hated football. Wouldn’t watch it for a second. Then when I was 11 I decided to give football a chance. My favorite color at the time was green, so I decided to check out the Jets, Eagles, and Dolphins. I watched a Jet game and they lost. I watched an Eagle game and they lost. Then I watched a Dolphins/Cowboys game (around 1989 or 1990) and met a man named Dan Marino who had a special talent for throwing the ball, which was very exciting. I also was born in Florida, so it made sense. Also, I have an irish background and the colors of the Dolphins match the flag of Ireland. Plus 13 was always my lucky number.
Die hard dolphin fan ever since and always will be.
Cool story here...
My dad came from Greece in 1972, the year they went undefeated. He played professional football (soccer) in Greece and had no idea what American football was about. When Miami went 17-0, he felt that it was good luck, and so he stuck with them. I along with my two brothers, were born into it, and then we became fanatical about the Phins. I have met Marino, Zach, Ricky, Bryan Cox, and Lamar Thomas, and i would never pledge my allegiance to another organization. I have been down to Joe Robbie twice, and this year will be my third time heading down from CT. Love it down there, and wouldn’t change it for the world.
Now is the time- the time to rise up from the depths of Hell and stake our claim back on top of the AFC East...Look out Gaytriots here comes Jake Long and the Phins
Born in South Florida
… but never really got into it until the 1-15 season.
My dad is a Jets fan (from Jersey) and my brother is a Pats fan, to spite my step-dad who is a Dolfan. Then my cousins are all Bills fans (during the Superbowl losing era), so I felt I had no choice but to spite the Bill, Pat, and Jet fans in my family by being the biggest Dolphan possible.
I honestly hate my brother for the shit he makes me put up with – I my revenge when they lost the Superbowl! :)

One of my main reasons for creating this post
was to kinda get to know you guys a little better and hear all the different scenerios of how all you guys became fans BUT I CANT WAIT TO SEE HOW MATTY BECAME A DOLPHINS FAN. HEY MATTY WHERE ARE YOU??
Matty is on his way
As some of you know matty has J.B. Disease and is currently under going treatment.
J.B. is a rare brain disorder also known as John Beckelitis. or Quack trauma.
He has gotten medication for it and will be posting here soon.
(God, Matty’s going to kill me)

I was pulling for John Beck
I have a bunch of accounts on the internet named “Beck4Mercy” on the hopes I’d have a great nickname on the web. I guess I will keep the accounts or else I’ll have to start over any progress that account made on whatever it was supposed to do. Including this one. At least I’ll remember John Beck. This post makes me want to have a signature.
hahaha
look at what’s in his hands… he caught one of John’s errant ducks and popped it lol

Ehhh i feel bad for Matty…were with you brotha.

Its Sunday afternoon.....do you know where your beer is?
I always say-
that I was a Dolphins fan since birth. I was born in Ft. Lauderdale and my earliest memory is watching this team. I couldn’t imagine being the fan of another pro team- though I’d probably be an even bigger fan if they’d draft a few more Gators to go along with Channing Crowder next year ;).
He15man^2. . .get ready
My story is pretty boring
Basically, I have an older brother who is about 5 years older than me. So when he was 9 or 10, he would watch football all the time. Being the typical little brother, I wanted to watch to. I would watch the highlight shows then on Sunday night. And being 4 or 5 years old, I kind of latched onto the Dolphins because of their colors and some guy wearing #13 who threw the ball all over like I’ve never seen anyone throw a ball. They were fun to watch, especially when you’re very young.
and that’s basically it. From that point on, I collected all the Dolphin football cards I could get my hands on. I bought all the Dolphins Starting Lineup figures that were out there. And the love affair with this team just grew from there.
Marino sucked me in too...
but not by watching on TV, originally.
Believe it not, my older cousin always picked the NYJ when we played Techmo Super Bowl for the original NES. I didnt like playing w/ the Giants, so I latched on to Miami because they were the most fun to play with. With Marino, Duper, Clayton… I was unstoppable. Then I watched them in real life and it was like the same thing! Once Marino retired I thought that I would abandon them, but Jimmy Johnson’s D sucked me back in for life.
Saw them play on TV in 1969 and I was hooked
Being a native floridian and being born in Lake county, I don’t remember any other team on local TV back then. I was 8 years old and my dad was yelling at the TV and I thought man.. any team that could get my dad that fired up had to be special. So I started yelling for them as well and who could top the perfect season. To win it all was just unbelievable to experience as a fan ! We’ll back at that level one day, believe me !!!!!!

Some time in the Eighties in the UK
Some reason, in the mid to late eighties American Football became big in the UK.
We had a review program and the occasional game on TV over here and I really like it.
I got hooked following Dan Marino, green is my favourite colour and I really like dolphins, plus I knew where Miami was (this being me around 7).
Even had a Marino shirt which I managed to wear out over the following years.
But to show how drawn I was by colour I even followed the Boston Celtics for a bit and a Larry Bird special basketball.
So Miami was my team, spent a bit of time away post Marino years, but I’ve been playing catch up for the past couple of years.
Hoping this year is better than next year……
QUESTION.......
Matty jogged my memory on the whole cards thing….
anyone remember those 25cent helmets they sold in vending machines in grocery stores? you collected all the teams….most of the time you got stuck with like 10 bengals or oilers helmets. lol
ahhhhhhhhhh to be a kid again and for my worst problem to be looking for louis olivers rookie card….damn i wish i had a time machine
Its Sunday afternoon.....do you know where your beer is?
I remember them...
…and if I ever come across one of those machines, I still buy like 10 helmets!! Am I a loser or what?
LOL
… i used to have the whole collection…1st time i got a browns helmet i thot i got ripped off cus there were no stickers… dad hadda help me sort that out lol… , oh and i’d probably get at least 10…
great memories!
I remember praying for a Dolphin helmet as soon as I turned the dial with a hard too find quarter. I was really really……..really pissed when I went to my cousins house for a weekend and saw that he got all the helmets, a display rack and how to stack them by division from Sears……..to me, thats like fishing in a goldfish bowl when I’m out there in the wild!
by HuskerDolphin on Aug 27, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
lol yea
they sold the whole set, but it was way more fun getting em outta the vending machines… it was the only reason I went grocery shopping with my parents, because I got to get a new helmet. I think I was like 5 or 6.
and Krab I remember the Browns helmet, I got so mad lol

Ups and Downs
I became a Dolphins fan after my Grandpa passed away, He was A huge Raiders and Dolphins fan. But my dad was already a Raiders fan, so I decided to go with the Phins. I remember my grandpa getting me my first collectors card. A Dan Marino RC. I didn’t know the value of it at the time, It just meant something special to me. My Grandpa passed when I was 3, but it wasn’t until I got into grade school that I really started to follow the Dolphins, and Marino to Clayton quickly became my favorite connection. Every Sunday since I can remember I have always worn my Dolphins jersey and /zubaz, to this day I still do that, I went to the Bills Dolphins game a couple years ago, completely decked out in all my Dolphins gear. Me and my best friend (Bills Fan), basically Identically dressed except he was in Bills gear. Yeah I got joked on for bein a Phins fan, but I’ve stuck with them through the ups and downs. so we were 1-15 last year, They’re still my team, and will always be my team.
It's not worth winning, If you can't win big!

id empty that baby and proudly display them….hahahaha

Well, me
been born a live in Puerto Rico, there were not much football down here when groing up, but then, when i was 15 a friend of mine told me to go to his house to see a football game. It was the Skins at Miami. Miami was all over the air while Washington was running. Miami won that game 22-20(if i remember correctly) It was a great game. Then the Dolphins didn’t make it to the playoff, i follow the playoff and the Skins won the SB, and i talk to myself saying that we are the SB champs, cause we beated them. I became a fan after that game win over the Skins.
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(21 years and counting)
BTW, the game was in 1987
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(21 years and counting)

I grew up in West Virginia and my Dad was a Steelers fan. I remember the first time I every watched a game was when we beat the Steelers in the championship game to go to the Super Bowl and remain undefeated. I was almost five and I just thought it was cool for a team to be named after dolphins. Have been a die hard fan ever since. Even when I moved to Tenn. 13 yrs ago and they got this semi-pro team called the Titans I figured I’d be the one on TV getting their but kicked in a Dolphins Jersey. They.ve only been here twice to play and both times I was unable but they come back here next year and I plan on going. Have a friend from work who’s a Dolphin fan and we plan to go(ironically hes from ashland Ky and weve both been fans all our life. Go phins!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell, I still cry when they lose

Like i said
When I started this post. When I was a kid I hated watching football (although I loved to play football with my friends) because it always seemed to be on when I wanted to watch something else and we didn’t have cable when I was growing up.
It used to drive me crazy
because my uncles and my Grandfather would monopolize the tv’s all day on Sundays during football season and wouldnt do anything else with me all day (I guess now I know how MY kids feel). So I eventually decided “Hey if you cant beat em join em”.
DAN MARINO DELIVERED ME...

thats a lie…but thatd be a good reason right?

Oh Wait
It wasnt Dan Marino. It was Bob Griese. and it was the Orange Bowl. yeah, yeah thats it!
1994
Dolphins Vs. Raiders. I hated Jeff Hostetler’s moustache and that guy wearing 13 was incredible.
"The superior man blames himself. The inferior man blames others." Don Shula
that was a nasty stash
it never looked very clean. lol
Its Sunday afternoon.....do you know where your beer is?
still hate Hostetler
because he beat Marino in the QB Comp they used to have. NOBODY beat Marino, except some loser backup with the original Wann-stache lucked into a couple bulls-eyes and won. Hated him.
Anyway, my story is about as boring as it gets. Moved from NY to SoFla when i was 18 mos, pops became a Dolphins fan because they were the home team, and he LOVED Marino, I was a chip off the old block, grew up a complete homer in every sport (Dolphins, Canes, Heat, Marlins, Panthers..).
Got to meet Marino at a bar when I was like 5 (had a fake ID) and I wore my stupid little firemen costume (it was halloween) and he grabbed my fake walkie talkie and started calling Don Shula, had me cracking up (hey! I was 5!) Favorite Dolphin ever.

How I became a fan
I am from Miami but live in Atlanta, been a fan for 25 years when I was 11 I was a Raiders fan, My cousin from Miami was watching a Dolphins game and I making fun of them, he was quite a bit older than me and BIGGER at the time and held me down and roughed me up until I told him Miami was my favorite team ! Football is big in our family. Ironically he is now a Titans fan he gave up on the Fins, what a LOSER huh. LOL

hmmm
Lets see, I grew up and still remain in Boston. So its an unusual story how I became a fan. When I was around 7 a movie came out. A movie called Ace Ventura, prob one of my fav movies at the time and it was set largely around the Dolphins. I remember the following season when the pats played the fins I went against the fam and picked the fins… havent stopped since. Even last year I was still talking shit.
A couple of reasons
1) The story goes that when I was born my dad wanted to give his first (and only) son a football. He reached in a bin of footballs with logos and the one he grabbed had the Miami logo on it. The rest is history.
2) I grew up in Rochester NY, near Buffalo and home of the Jills training camp. I’m a contrarian by nature (aka a pain in the ass) and probably rooted for Miami just to tick off all the Jills fans around me. There are a surprising number of Dolphins fans around Buffalo, though. The rivalry isn’t what it used to be in the Kelly vs. Marino days. They often got the best of us, but just say “Norwood” and they tend to cringe. That’s fun.
