College Players to Watch: Defense

In my humble opinion, our biggest needs going into next season will be OLB and DB's.  So I would expect to grab a defensive playmaker within the first 2 rounds of the draft.  We all know how much BP likes his LB's to be monsters.

DL - We'll have a good young core to start with, but the depth is questionable.  Ferguson will be one more year closer to retirement, as will Vonnie Holliday, but Starks, Merling, and Langford should be a formidable starting front.

  • Vince Oghobaase, Duke - 6'6 310, the ideal size for a 3-4 NT.  He plays in the ACC, so it should be easy for all of us to catch him in a game or two.  Big guys like that are hard to miss.
  • Sen'Derrick Marks, Auburn - A big, hulking DT prospect that could become a 3-4 DE, 6'1 290.  A little short, but makes up for it with bulk and quickness.
  • Al Woods, LSU - 6'5 315, the kinda guy Parcells loves.  Might be one of the first DT's off the board if he performs up to potential this season.  LSU will be on tv alot, so make sure to check up on Mr. Woods.
  • Tyson Jackson, LSU - Another stud on one of the best DL's in the country, is probably the best 3-4 end prospect, and should be fun to watch destroy those poor SEC tackles assigned to block him.  At 6'5 290, he can wreak havoc off the edge as well as stuff the run.

ILB's - If Crowder, Torbor, and Ayodele can hold the spot down, we probably won't be looking for a starter here.  But it never hurts to look for a sleeper late in the draft, ala Zach.

  • Rey Maualuga, USC - Has the size and speed to play inside or outside in the 3-4, could be the best LB in the class, along with Laurinaitis.  Rey would instantly add some swagger to the middle of this defense.
  • Brandon Spikes, UF - The man made 131 tackles last season, so he's pretty much a machine.  He's another guy with LB size and SS speed.
  • Sean Weatherspoon, Mizzou - One of the fastest LB prospects, he can play all over the field, and would ideal next to a run-stuffer in the middle like Crowder.

Star-divide

OLB's - In my opinion, our biggest position of need.  JT's gone, and Porter won't be around long, so we need playmakers on the edges.  I would expect to take one in the first 2 rounds.

  • Michael Johnson, GTech - My favorite prospect, and already my pick for Miami if were back in the top 10.  He's 6'7 250, runs a 4.6, and stayed for his senior season to improve on his skills.  He can rush the passer, play the run, and drop in coverage, and with his size, should be a serious threat to opposing offenses.  He could eventually become the kind of player JT was and is, which is plenty good enough for me.
  • George Selvie, USF - Another terrific rush-LB prospect, 6'4 240 with a 4.6/4.7 40 time.  He took the QB down 14.5 times last season, which amounts to more than 1 a game.  Both him and Johnson could end up going top 10 if they have solid seasons.
  • Brian Orakpo, Texas - A 6'4 255lb freak, runs low 4.6's and translates well to a 3-4 scheme because of his athleticism.  Should be interesting how his play affects his draft stock throughout the season.

DB's - If Yeremiah Bell can stay healthy, we'll only need to add one safety, and possibly a CB to put alongside Will Allen.  I don't think Chris Crocker is the long-term answer, but teams have proved that you don't need studs in the secondary to win games.

  • Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio St. - The top CB prospect, but I can't see us taking one in the first round.  A true "shutdown corner" really doesn't exist anymore, so trying to find one isn't a necessity.  If it turns out that a number 1 CB is our biggest need, then Jenkins would be a good option.
  • Victor Harris, VTech - Plays all over the place, logging time at WR as well as KR, and is a big physical corner capable of playing the press.  At 6'0 200, he'll be able to beat up the smaller receivers, and he has enough strength to knock the big guys off their routes.  May not be able to play on an island with the speed guys, but there's not many corners who can.
  • Taylor Mays, USC - An absolute stud, 6'4 225 with sub 4.5 speed, you don't see too many guys like that.  Most likely will be the top safety taken, and would be a Sean Taylor-like playmaker in the secondary.
  • Myron Rolle, FSU - A bit smaller than Mays, but the same kind of combo safety.  He has the speed to play FS and the size and power to play SS.  He is sound in all aspects of the game, from tackling and playing the run, to coverage skills and ballhawking.
  • Will Moore, Mizzou - Another solid safety prospect in what could turn out to be a loaded safety class.  He's an INT machine and has a knack for getting his hands on the ball.  Only an inch smaller than Rolle, and could potentially be the fastest of the three top guys.  Any one of these safety's could be the cornerstone of a very good secondary.

So, does everybody else feel like we could be looking a defensive-heavy draft for us next year?  I love the direction the team is headed, and I feel like one more strong draft to add some playmakers and difference makers will put us in the thick of AFC contention.  BTW...  Go Canes :)

Frontpaged again baby

What’s the record for most frontpaged fanposts? Since my thread comment record was obliterated multiple times in the past couple months. :)

Where’s finsxfactor, I’m sure he’ll be emailing Matty begging to be frontpaged to break another record lol

lol

to be honest, I’m always looking to front page FanPosts. But the important thing is that they have to be well-written (in terms of grammar and punctuation and everything like that) because they get picked up by various news sources and such.

didn't put everybody

just a few to keep an eye on… everybody already knows about Laurinaitis, and I think Maualuga will give him a run for top LB this season..

Well im pretty sure that well be in the top 10 next year

How i see it whats best is that we try to keep traden down and just picken up more ajnd more draft choices,We already now that this team are reayl good at scouting and aspeacilt in the defensive side…..So lets just get as many picks as we can no matta how low they are….N the lowa the betta,Cuz less money your putten on a guy that you know nuthan about…This team can find a diamond in the 3rd in second round wit out a problem….I fell that next year we should get sme free agents…..

For someone abroad

who doesn’t catch any college ball (apart from a couple of bowls), these posts were AWESOME. Thanks a lot.

Secondly I think it’s got to be defence next year. It’s dangerous to look ahead, and obviously the draft will be affected by how both offence and defence perform this year, but D line and Linebackers are where it’s at. I like our linebackers, but does anyone think they’re elite, or that we couldn’t improve there? Of course not. And a nose tackle so our whole front three are young and full of potential or we simply have cover for the older NTs. Depth on the D line never hurts, look at the Giants. Man, I’m pumped about the future of this team.

Football isn't a matter of life and death - it's far more important than that.

LB to look at....

Tray Blackmon – Auburn

LB WR

I really hope we pick up both of these position in our first 3 picks. I think we have a good developmental NT in Soliai, so unless there is an absolute stud available in the top ten I hope the 1st pick is an OLB. If we get another DE in the first two round I’ll be disappointed, but hey that’s just me.

And thanks Matty, nice reports on Offense and Defense.
