College Players to Watch: Offense
Since most everyone here will agree we're still at least 1 draft away from being a playoff contender, I decided to look at which players we should be watching this College Football Season. Everybody has their own ideas of positions of need for the Dolphins, so I'll do every position.
QB's - Doubt were in the market for one, at least on Day One. Could be looking at a late-round backup project, depending on the continued development of Henne.
- Graham Harrell, Tex Tech - most likely another system guy, but the numbers are ridiculous. Wouldn't be bad to take a flyer on him late and give him a couple years on the bench to develop into a good backup.
- Nate Longshore, Cal - Big guy, strong arm, but actually got worse between sophomore and junior years. I'd like to see him perform this year without his top two WR's from the past couple of years.
RB's - As long as Ronnie returns to form at some point this season, RB won't be a concern going into next season. The R&R Express will give be all the RB we need here.
- Knowshon Moreno, Georgia - 1st round prospect, people say he's the second coming of Herschel. We shouldn't need him, but he'll still be fun to watch.
- Arian Foster, Tenn - Big, strong back that fits the Parcells mold of RB's, could be a steal late, especially as injury protection.
- PJ Hill, Wis - Beast. Plain and Simple. The ultimate short-yardage back.
WR's - This is a position I think could definitely use improvement. Our top guys haven't proven a thing, and our big FA pickup is slowly playing his way off the team. Unless Ginn, Hagan, and Bess all turn into studs, we'll definitely be in the market for some WR help come draft day.
- Michael Crabtree, Tex Tech - He's 6'3 of football magnet. The guy catches EVERYTHING. If WR is a pressing need next offseason, this is the ideal guy to fill the role. The only question is, will we in a position to take a WR first round?
- Vidal Hazelton, USC - pretty much a Keyshawn-clone, big, tall, long receiver with terrific hands. Played most of last year with muscle tears in his stomach. If getting a receiver isn't top priority, he will a very nice mid-round pickup, assuming he's still around.
- Jaison Williams, Oregon - HUGE receiver, a bit slow, but at 6'5 240, how fast does he really need to run. Keep your eye on him out on the west coast, could be a serious sleeper.
OL's - We'll definitely be looking for depth, but our starting 5 of Long, Smiley, Satele, Thomas, Carey should be very good. If Carey leaves as a FA, then we may be looking at another first round OT.
- Ciron Black, LSU - Big enough for Parcells to notice, plays on the left but has the size and strength to play on the right.
- Alex Boone, Ohio St. - Humongous man, 6'8 315. If we need a RT to bookend with Jake, Throwing another 6'7+ 315+ man out there will scare the sh*t out of run defenses. Just hope our QB could throw over him.
- Duke Robinson, OU - Certainly fits the size requirement, 6'5 330. Was a good enough guard last year to almost warrant coming out a year early. May end playing himself into a mid-first round draft slot this year, although we probably won't need a 1st round guard.
- Herman Johnson, LSU - They don't make em much bigger than this guy. He's Shaq in pads. 6'7 349... wow. Just put him next to Jake and run left forever. We could use some guard depth, and possibly a starter, depending on Smiley and Thomas.
Defense to come in a couple days. By the way, Go UM.

No doubt
Gators take the SEC this year (which by default means a National Championship ;) )
Not to mention a few prospects to watch from this team-
Brandon Spikes is a beast at inside linebacker.
If Percy Harvin gets over his heal problem he’s unstoppable- plays receiver and out of the backfield.

Great job on the post
I was at the game last year when Longshore tried to run thru the Washington D for a score. He was dropped well short, a bad decision. Cost Cal #1 ranking. He may not even start this year. Just saying…

It was against Oregen State...
…that Cal lost there chance for a number one ranking. And Longshore missed that game due to injury. Why he is on this list though doesn’t make sense to me.

I really liked Longshore two years ago
he was a disappointment last season, but I put him and Harrell on the list as late-round guys, not the top prospects. We won’t be looking for a day one QB, so I didn’t put any down. I hope Longshore gets a shot though, he did look good as a soph.

Yeah
after the way that Riley kid played in the bowl game I’d bet he gets the call. Longshore has some talent but he can’t seem to stay healthy. Like the Harrell pick though- regardless of his system that kid has talent. I would take a look at Chase Daniels- he’s a bit short so he probably won’t go early but he reminds me of Drew Brees- short or not he makes plays.

Imagine...
Could you guys imagine our team next year, with Henne at the helm and the rest of our young guys with another year in our training program. You add a guy like Crabtree to mix with some linebackers and a few dbs. That would be awesome

Good Article Idea...
One of the reasons I like watching College ball is to kind of scout pro players, especially for guys I think would be good for the Dolphins. Keep these articles coming.

THE RESON I LIKE WATCHING COLLEGE BALL
So i can watch the hurricanes kick some a—. 1 more year and we will be back. Go Canes!!!!

Bah.
The ’Canes are just like the ’Dawgs, always gonna be better “next year” :)
This year’s NCAA National Champion will be decided on November 1st in Jacksonville, FL.
I guarantee you, too, that the little rushing the field stunt that Georgia pulled last year will be set on replay on every TV in every gym and practice facility on the UF campus the week prior to that game. Meyer is a master of motivation, and doesn’t really need to use much more then that. Thanks Richt!

I dunno-
I’d keep the biggest eye on nose tackle prospects since Ferguson is nearing the end of his career and we don’t have anyone there at the moment who could replace him, and DE/OLB pass rusher types since the 34 needs an elite pass rusher to thrive. I would bet we look there before we attempt to pick up WRs and CBs- especially since teams like the Giants have really shown that you can get by with Joe Schmoe at corner if you have an elite pass rush which we don’t seem to have at this point.
I always like to keep an eye out for the smaller school talents- its the best feeling in the world when you pick up a steal in the draft a la Langford and Thomas.
By the way- for any college football fans out there- you should read Dr. Saturday on yahoo sports- formally the Sunday Morning QB for this blog network. Most interesting writing on the internet regardless of subject- made even sweeter by the fact that he is writing about football.

Starks
may be the replacement for Ferguson. With him, Merling, and Langford, we have a very good young DL core to start with. Adding depth to that will be the project of the next couple offseasons, and I think that would probably get taken care of later in the draft. I have to think we will go after a bigtime playmaker in round 1, whether it be on offense (Crabtree) or defense.

Defense is coming
My favorite D prospect is Michael Johnson from GTech. 6’7 245 plays the 3-4 rush linebacker, one of our biggest needs and one of Parcells favorite positions to put studs at. Also the CB class doesn’t look to be very deep so we may need to grab one early if it ends up being a serious need (depending on FA and such).
BTW.. If U aint UM, U aint Shit! lol Go Canes
And to the guy that said Northwestern.. that’s balls right there… go you lol

Another RB.....
Damion Fletcher – Southern Miss. Better than Kevin Smith and Matt Forte, and both those rookie RBs could be starters soon.

relax bud
nobody told you that you have to watch PJ Hill. And I’m happy that you were the only person on earth to watch him play FSU, considering he’s never played them.
Try not to talk anymore. If the thread is boring, don’t come in here and bitch and moan, just read something else.
