Around SBN: The Pros and Cons of an 18-game NFL Schedule

Beck vs. Henne

I thought I would throw this breakdown of Beck and Henne's collegiate career's.  It's pretty interesting.  The numbers are quite similar:

Games: Beck - 43, Henne - 47.

Comp.-Att. Beck - 885/1418, Henne - 828/1387.

Comp. Percentage: Beck - 60%, Henne - 59.7%.

Total Yards: Beck - 11,021, Henne - 9715

Yards per game: Beck - 256.3, Henne - 206.7.

Total Touchdowns - Beck 79, Henne - 87.

TD's per game: Beck - 2.3, Henne -  1.85

Total int’s: Beck - 34, Henne - 37.

Int's per game:  Beck - 1.3, Henne - 1.3

TD/Int Ratio: Beck - 2.3/1, Henne - 2.4/1.

So, going off of collegiate numbers, I’d say both qb’s are very close, if not the same.

BTW - The “checkdown” is a hugh part of BYU’s offense. Beck made a living in college by throwing it to the TE’s and RB’s. He needs to get away from the “checkdown” to be successful in the NFL, but he has the intangibles to make it.

As for Henne, he has all of the makings to be successful as well.

Who lost to Appalachian St?

Compare Senior stats, there is no comparison.

That’s because Henne had two and a half games where he wasn’t injured in his senior year…

last year

Beck had 2.5 games…..all of which he had no o-line or running game

The Same Situation Cleo Lemon Had

And Lemon outplayed Beck.

Nuff said. The guy didn’t win the job. Plain and simple. He had the cards stacked against him and he failed to overcome.

I don’t think it was a fair competition for Beck, but he didn’t do anything to change their (Parcells & CO) minds. That is the fact of the matter.

that's not a fair statement

~I don’t think it was a fair competition for Beck, but he didn’t do anything to change their (Parcells & CO) minds. That is the fact of the matter.~

Really, Beck had every opportunity to win the starting job this year, even giving him the start against TB… and by all accounts he showed little to no improvement over last year.

It’s hard to say the cards were stacked against him, when he was getting equal snaps for the preseason.

by W NY Fins Fan on Aug 14, 2008 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I Think Beck...

…had to play exceptional in order to win the starting job. As good or slightly better wasn’t going to be enough with this regime having their own guys.

This is just my opinion.

The fact is that he played as good or less than the others. He’s a goner.

its more about parcells image

he is just to vain to let a player from the last “era” become his starting qb

he drafted chad henne
brought in one of his FA
and got chad pennington

o yea if people remember there were a lot of reports on how beck must do a lot more to win the job than the others had to

That's not it at all.

Look at it from Parcell’s viewpoint. Beck was mismanaged horribly last year and is not reliable, thus he had to bring in back up plans in case Beck didn’t work out. So, he got Henne. And Henne wasn’t likely going to start if Beck didn’t improve from last year, so they got McCown as a safety net. Beck was given just as many reps as every other QB and he did the worst. Parcell’s gave him ample opportunity. This is the NFL not Pop Warner, you don’t base your coaching decisions on what you feel is “fair” to the player, but what is best for the team.

To summarize: Beck was given a fair shot and he blew it. Sayonara Beckie-Poo, we’re not in a gambling mood.

AMEN FINSXFACTOR!!!!!

You guys all wanna jump on Henne’s nut sack, when last year you were all excited about Beck. Henne is just as much an unknown as Beck is. Do you think Brady is the best QB in the league? I don’t. But the fact is that Brady last year could wash his car, smoke a cigar, walk the dog, and then throw the football with the way his line blocked for him. Great offensive lines make ordinary QB’s look like superstars. Great defensive lines make them look like deer in headlights.

Get it?

Now is the time- the time to rise up from the depths of Hell and stake our claim back on top of the AFC East...Look out Gaytriots here comes Jake Long and the Phins

i think the consensus is

is that Parcell & Co. are higher on Henne than Beck. And I am pretty sure their opinions matter more than any of ours. I agree they are both pretty much unknown- but the front office has their opinions based on what they know and have seen, and I think it’s pretty clear how they feel.

Me? I’ll get excited about a guy when he steps on the field and produces. Until then, everything is pretty much unknown.

Get it?

No. Actually I don’t. Peyton Manning had a poor offense and line when he came into the league. He didn’t play as well as he does now but he never looked like a deer in headlights.

Same goes for Jay Cutler. Cutler showed up in the league behind a poor line and was able to make plays from day 1. Sure he made rookie mistakes, but nothing quite as blooper real hilarious as the ones that John Beck made a staple of his Sunday starts.

Actually Cutler is an interesting comparison. I know many here credit Beck for having a howitzer and Orande Gadson’s hands but (in reality) both guys have similar tools. In fact both guys had health issues last year.

Cutler was light last year because of undiagnosed diabetes. Beck too was light last year because of a cold he had early in the year (according to him). Cutler played decently though and Beck did not.

Some guys rattle and other guys don’t. The reason people are more excited about Henne than Beck is that Beck has shown nothing but laugh-track fumbles and check-down passes. Henne on the other hand is new and will get the the chance that Beck did (just like Beck did initially).

Personally I’m willing to go on the record with this one. I think Henne looks like a guy who will be great quarterback. I never said that about Beck so please don’t accuse me of any such thing. Beck has some of the tools, but like Parcells, I began to question his mental toughness. I think he won’t do very much in this league.

I will humbly admit to this if things emerge otherwise. Meanwhile we’re talking about a guy (Beck) who probably won’t be on the team in two weeks.

And by the way....

Steve Young came from BYU, and also Brian Griese, and Drew Henson cam from Michigan. So what’s that got to do with anything?

Also

Jim McMahon came from BYU. You can pretty much say that about any University. They have all had great ones, and bad ones

The competition is different...

… in those divisions, Henne has more merit of having that stats.

by omontero75 on Aug 14, 2008 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

We'll see about the differences in conferences when...

Utah beats Michigan this year, BYU wins a BCS game, and Ohio State gets crushed in another Title game.

BTW – Beck’s senior year, BYU crushed it’s so called “competition” in the MWC by an average score of 37 to 7. They also crushed a mid-level Pac 10 team in Oregon 38 t0 7 in their bowl game. This, after the Oregon head coach bashed BYU for playing in the MWC.

by Rubes22 on Aug 14, 2008 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

and what would that

really say about anything other then utah had a better day then michigan THIS year?

how is that related to how two QB’s will perform in the NFL…

heck who had the better college career, Ryan Leaf or Tom Brady?

by W NY Fins Fan on Aug 14, 2008 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no competition

anymore. Pennington and Henne are our #1 and #2. Get used to it.

by joel311 on Aug 14, 2008 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

Theres a big differnce

One did play at byu and the other played at michigan..Henne was a 4 year starter with top compatators….Lets me say something else you can be great in collage but that dont mean nuthan in the pros….Just look at alex smith,Some players just dont fit in certain systems and cant keep up with the speed…..Look at reggie bush…….So all im tryen to say is at the pro level you start all over and all those collage states just throw them out the window………

Here's The Cold Water

This type of argument is very hard to get anywhere with.

We will have to wait and see, probably two years, before the better of the two emerges.

In the meantime Henne is clearly THIS franchises future. Whether better than John Beck or not.

Yeah....

I’d like to see Beck put up stats against Ohio State, much less anyone in the NFL.

All though dosen’t matter too too much
Neither probably gonna start.

by Phinsguy99 on Aug 14, 2008 6:35 PM EDT reply actions

What?

We needed a 3rd quarterback anyway and McCown would make a great 3rd stringer if Beck pulled through.

I’m ready to cut Beck now. Let some other team develop him.

joel311 did you say this last year (pulled from archive)

“look at beck in the game against KC…he knows what it takes to win…he is the future of this franchise…let him play and watch him win!”
