Beck-McCown - which will stay on?

http://static.keebali.com/finheaven.com/forums/customavatars/avatar29164_2.gif

As Miami Dolphins, I think these two guys future's are going to be pretty short and/or trivial.

Here's what I believe may happen and I'm sure Beck and/or McCown supporters will complain, so spare me the whining....

Right now, Beck is looking like the #3 or maybe even #4 guy in this QB shuffle - McCown hasn't been much better either. By the end of the preseason we can be pretty certain that:

One of our QB's will be cut or possibly traded with the most most obvious candidates being Beck or McCown

I don't see SIP (Sprano-Ireland-Parcells) Keeping a 4th QB over a versatile player who contributes on special teams and can be a backup at a position spot.

Beck may have some minor trade value (say for a 6th rounder). McCown has pratically zero trade value.

Beck however is not a SIP player, he's a cam-cam holdover whereas McCown was signed by the regime.

McCown has a track record in the league - albeit it a poor one with the occasional good game. Beck is much more limited (last year and this year) and basically not good.

Another possibility: Trade or cut Beck or McCown. Keep the remaining guy. Then if Simms gets cut, sign him, and cut the leftover of McCown or Beck so for '08: Pennington, Simms, Henne

'09: Henne, Pennington, Simms.

So which of the two do you think will stick - McCown or Beck? Whomever stays is probably scout team material while the other is a goner obviously who will have to hope to catch on with another team.

McCown's gone.

trade value or no, he’s outta here.
Beck is cheap to keep; unless we get a great offer for him, he stays.

IMO

(like you haven’t heard it all before)

id rather keep beck

just because he has potential, while mccown has basically topped out. but if were not gonna give beck a shot and just keep him as the 3rd qb anyway, we might as well get a pick for him

I Think Beck Stays

He has trade value in the off-season. No one will trade for Josh McCown.

If anyone wants Beck, for a 5th rounder or higher the brass will move him right away and then McCown stays.

So, here it goes.

(If) trade offer (then) Beck is gone.
(If) no trade offer (then) McCown is cut.

I can do a circuit diagram if you guys like.

Here's the caveat Phinisher...

if you keep just Henne-Beck (in that order) behind Pennington then you have no experience at backup. Is SIP going to do that?

If you keep Henne-McCown, then you at least have a (medicore) guy with experience in McCown.

As for the circuit diagram, I’m thinking the cell that connects Beck will be cut really soon…

neither

beck’s no sipper nor is he any good. (beck is while only 2 years younger? will likely never measure up to mccown) I see some team throwing a 5th/6th rounder for him

mccown will go if there is a free agent cut they like better.

or a late round

QB they thought they would draft, where the team is trying to sneak him onto the practice squad

ooops forgot to add - but they will

likely want a vet to back up henne, if they think he needs more time if/when pennington goes down….
(the reason they’ll go longer with mccown than beck

Upside

From the Dolphins perspective.. Idunno.
John Beck is 26 years old but he’s not a ‘Bill’ guy and has not been great.
Josh McCown has been with 4 teams but the salary is questionable. He does have more experience.

Hmmm?

It makes no sense to cut Beck

Why out all your eggs in one basket with Henne? If you keep both you have a better chance of finding that QB of the future, Beck hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, while McCown has.

The best argument I’ve heard for cutting Beck is: “Well he’s not a Parcells guy,” Neither are Ronnie Brown, Satele, Carey, Ginn, Porter, Bell, W. Allen, etc.
Should they be cut too based on that faulty logic?

Why so serious?

for a couple of reason

first and the simplest… you don’t think he has what it takes to be a NFL QB
2nd – you don’t think his skill set/personality/work ethic matches your scheme
3rd – you have people on the roster who you think will be better
4th – you believe mccown, who is only 2? years older matches your scheme better… or has greater upside
5th – you think he’s peaked, or his development will take too long
6th – you plan on carring only 2 qb’s and will use the roster spot for someone else who you feel has more upside

now any of the above are all valid reasons to release/trade Beck… i’m not saying the coaching staff believes any of them, i’m just saying those are all reasons why you’d cut a player… (heck they held onto some of wanny’s picks for years waiting for them to develop and in retrospect wouldn’t it have been better to cut them earlier and brought someone else in?)

now as to why keep mccown over beck… well, he’s 2? or 3 years older, he’s never really been given a fair shake either, he has physical tools that are equal to if not better then Beck, and he seems to score higher on the leadership skill set.

nawww.. none of that makes any sense

you are just hung up on an emotional “keep McCown” rant. No logic to it at all.

i heard...

or maybe read, not really sure, that the dolphins plan on being active in picking up the people other teams cut. maybe it’ll be another qb. either way, expect the unexpected

Yes

Off waiver wires. Almost every position could be looked at but I think we are o.k. at quarterback. A few positions come to mind. What happened with Terry Glenn? Chad P and Terry sounds good to me. Has Terry been picked up by a team? Did I miss it?

I hate to rain...

On the parade, but the kid who couldn’t beat Ohio State, much less App. State is not the QB of the future! It’s the pre-season guys, wait until he sees real action.

And if Beck is really gone, why did he start the game on Sat.? McCown is the odd man out… Beck and Henne compete for QB of the future…
