Jason Taylor takes out a full-page ad in South Florida papers to thank Dolphin fans for their support. Pretty classy, I must admit.

It Hurts

Classy is right. I wish he could have finished here. He’s going up to a nowhere franchise to finish his days.

i'm getting all misty....

...must be my allergies. I am pretty sure I am allergic to bullshit.

I loved Taylor as a Dolphin, and admire the heck out of him as a football player, but late’s face it folks… he is using his acting skills and his agent’s advice to play to the public to help preserve his image. I it bugs me when it feels like someone s playin me. I don’t wanna hear it (or read it). :)

The best thing Taylor can do now is play hard and pad his stats for a future HoF bid, and then come back at the end and retire a Dolphin.

aww.

that does make it kinda sad.

the cynic in me though say he doesn’t want to alienate 5 million moviegoers.

And let's not forget

jersey sales. I agree that a big reason why you take out an ad like that, more than just to express your feelings (b/c I don’t necessarily doubt its sincerity), is to maintain a favorable image, which leads to a favorable income for many people involved.

by caesq on Jul 27, 2008 4:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And let's be honest...

we haven’t really been the greatest fans his whole tenure. there are many times the seats weren’t filled, or the boo birds came out. Not criticizing. Just pointing out that if I were in JTs shoes, there would have been times that I felt betrayed by the fans.

Doncha think?

Maybe JT went overboard with this...

But I think this is fair enough. Since the words themselves are just usual PR bullspeak you have to kind of read between the lines. This is what I imagine JT is saying here (MY IMAGINATION NOT A REAL QUOTE)

“Yeah I wanted out, but it had nothing to do with the fans or the team, only the circumstances – which were that we were on a third franchise reboot in four years in what might my last year in football; and on a team that needs draft picks and young players for the future far more than it needs me. The dancing stuff was completely irrelevant; when Cameron was fired and Zach left I decided I was off anyway, it made too much sense not to. It’s just a pity that the dancing broke my relationship with the fans, and that’s what I’m trying to fix here, both as a future movie star protecting my image and because I genuinely appreciated all your support. So, to recap, it’s not your fault, I don’t feel it’s my fault, it’s fate’s fault for making us better off without each other. Sorry I couldn’t get you a ring, I promise I did all I could while the chance was there. I just wanted to let you know that if I get to Canton it’ll be in Aqua and Orange. Peace.”

And if that’s the message then I’m all for it. I would have loved him to stay, but if ever there was a case for moving on this was it. Anyway, JT for the HoF. The best ever dolphins defender belongs there. Think long term, people. It’s not all about what happened two months ago onwards.

by Agumen on Jul 27, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hell yeah

i’m sure you nailed it with this – one of the classiest guys to ever wear the aqua and orange and there’s no way he wouldn’t have wanted to end it in miami if he had a choice. He didn’t make the trade, Parcells and co. did and if the Redskins hadn’t gotten the injuries, he’d be in Davie right now. So all you clowns with the negative posts can just think about what he’s done for this team and community for 11 years.

by PhinFan85 on Jul 27, 2008 8:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ahh... blind optimism...

that’s sweet.
but you have no way of knowing that he would be in camp right now and to spin it like he didn’t want the trade ” there’s no way he wouldn’t have wanted to end it in miami if he had a choice. He didn’t make the trade, Parcells and co. did and if the Redskins hadn’t gotten the injuries, he’d be in Davie right now.”, well, that just goes against the facts.
However, the point of my original post was not to demean JT. I said I admire the hell out of him as a football player. I was criticizing the motivation for the ad, and I hope Agumen is right… that if he makes it to Canton, it will be in aqua and orange.
So maybe before you start calling people clowns, you should remove your big red nose.
... or at least make sure you understand the posts.
IMO

Hey!!

PhinFan85 & LeftCoastFinFan(i know you cover yourself, but left me hanging as a clown LOL), you might not be demeaning JT, but because i really don’t give a flying F## about what he is doing or will be doing, that does not make me a clown. The clown here, if there is one, it might be JT. I pay for his jerseis(my wife’s and mine), a fly to Miami & stay in a hotel for the games twices a year. I’m a loyal fan throw the goods and bads(to tell you the true, more BAD than good), but i still a Miami fan, not like JT that because he is not winning then he want out. Her is gettin pay and i i’m or was(thank god)part of the one providing for that as##e.
PhinFan85, after you calling me clown, or who ever have a diff opinion than your, i could, insted, call you a## kisser or something else, because your opinion is diff than mine, but the thing here is, that everybody respect each other opinion and don’t call each other names or whatever. Respect is importan among pier.

Anyway, no matter what, JT s not here, and nobody know if he will terire as a Dolphin cause he has not said. Unless there are some mind reader, among us, that could enlight us!! LOL

I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(20 years and counting)

LOL! Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hangin bro.

well said. JT is no longer here, so he doesn’t matter.

a## kisser?

i don’t think it’s just my opinion that JT was/is a classy guy. Just read the comments on this post. And who’s ass exactly am i kissing? I’ve got jerseys too, that doesn’t mean I should be pissed off and negative towards what took place. It’s a business, guy – this stuff happens in business. He still appreciates the Miami fans and was trying to say that publicly – end of story. By the way, nice touch with ‘respect everybody’ comment while still throwing a##kisser in there. Need some grammer work too.

by PhinFan85 on Aug 1, 2008 12:22 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bottom line is...

he didn’t have to do this. Say what you will about alterior motives, but until two months ago there was never anything in his character to suggest he was a bad guy, liar, selfish (and other names he has recently been called here and elsewhere of late).

I say it’s a classy move, by a good guy. I still wish all this had been handled better by both sides, but it’s over now and all I can do is wish JT well in DC.

I'm sorry!!

but i’m lost on this one. WHO IS JT?
I think TC just started and i didn’t saw his name on the list of MIAMI player’s. For all i care JT can save his money an go to hell, sorry, to Washington

I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(20 years and counting)

by Aleta on Jul 27, 2008 6:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it is a class move...

Compare what JT has done here with what’s going on in GB with Favre?

Maybe I have a good sense of how to separate what is business from what is personal. The JT thing is just business – he wants to have a shot at the playoffs and contending while the dolphins are in the business of a long-term (don’t kid yourself, this will take a few years) project.

by Natalya on Jul 28, 2008 11:57 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

define "class"

“The JT thing is just business – he wants to have a shot at the playoffs and contending while the dolphins are in the business of a long-term (don’t kid yourself, this will take a few years) project.”

Totally agree. But does “just business” = class?
I agree that the ad he took out was “just business”. I think that for JT today, “just business” is no longer “just football”. He is thinking ahead about his bigger public image. And I’m sure his PR person said something like, “Hey, JT… you know what would really make you look classy in this whole trade thing?”

Again, the only thing I am arguing is that Newspaper Ad = “just business”, but that does not equal classy. IMO

And JT/Favre? No real comparison there, except that as of last week they both wanted to be traded. But Favre will probably take out an add in the Milwaukee Herald when he gets traded, too. :)

WHY!?!?!?

Seriously, guys. We’re Dolphins fans. Not Eagles fans, who hate Donovan McNabb for smiling even when they’re losing or who still think Brian Westbrook is too small.

We’re not Jets fans, with eternal optimism or spite, depending on which one is wrong.

Dolphins fans. We pull for the winningest franchise since the merger. We have watched the entire careers (near) of three of the best at their position.

Why are we now criticizing them for something like this ad? I understand it is only human to put on rosy glasses when pulling for your horse in the QB competition, but to portray JT’s ad as Machiavellian is kind of rude.

The man is gone, by his and the franchises accord. Washington probably wasn’t his first choice. He knows that they have a uphill battle this year.

And yes, he still needs people to like him in South Florida. He has his businesses to run and probably more to open. He needs Dolphins fans to buy tickets to Firestorm II. That only makes sense. But do you think he only put out this ad for that purpose? Honestly?

Come on guys. He’s JT. He still hates the Jets and their fans. That alone should forever endear him to your hearts.

Machiavellian

I like that word. :)

Look, I can’t help playing devil’s advocate regarding emotional statements when we are talking about business. JT is endeared in my heart. okay? And I certainly don’t blame him for wanting out. I am just a little cynical about the foo-foo, warm fuzzy stuff. I respect the hell out of JT for always being a blunt, straight shooter. And for never letting down his game, or shirking the responsibility when things didn’t go well.

But let’s face it… JT’s PR machine is in full swing, and I am still a Dolphins fan. Which means, bye-bye JT, I wish you well. Let’s move on.

By the way...

when I said, ‘this is just business’, I was referring to the whole thing of JT wanting a trade – not his ad. I think JT wanted to move on and have a shot at the playoffs and maybe more. Just like Zach getting released was business, this move to washington, was for me, again, just business – nothing at all against the dolphins.

And you know what? in 5 years, chances are few people will remember him as a redskin, but instead, he’ll always be thought of as a fin. Just like Montana, despite his stint in KC

I think he really does care about his legacy here in Miami. My feeling is the article was taken out with genuine sincerity – I can’t prove that of course, but then nobody can prove it was just a stunt either.

by Natalya on Jul 28, 2008 1:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can prove it.

I have my people working on it as we speak.
