I have been wondering this for a while...
what type of quarterback are you looking for?
1) Include your description
2) Similar player in the NFL
3) Your choice on the dolphins roster to fill that role
4) Explain how that player will fit the role
For Me:
1) A person that will consistently get the job done. Will not be flashy but will play safe not idiotic football. Wont turn the ball over and will put the team into position to play with accurate passes
2) Philip Rivers/ Jeff Garcia(minus age)
3) John Beck
4) Coming into Miami he already had the arm. He has been relentless in his work ethic and "off-season" training (notice quotations). He has the competitive mind set and has all the physical ability.
*lets try making this a long thread (not one that has like 2-3 responses)...I want to see what thephinsider.com's expectations are for our starting qb
(Matty any front page promotion (in a blue thingy or yellow thingy) would be hugely apperciated)

I like it.. lets do it..
1) A smart player. Doesn’t make stupid decisions or force balls into coverage. Can make all the throws (bullets, touch, short, medium, deep), and will deliver the ball with zip and accuracy. Big enough arm to hit the big play down the field.
2. Drew Brees
3. Beck or Henne.
4. I think they are similar players, both are extremely smart, have strong arms, and are accurate passers. They both seem to be very hard workers also. At this point, there’s no preference between the two, just that Beck gets his chance to prove he can be a starter, and Henne gets a chance to learn and adjust before being thrown to the wolves.

I agree with you on your point about playing smart. We have had a lot of quarterbacks come through miami. Mostly all of them had the physical ability, but they were not smart. Looking back on our quarterback struggles we always think about stupid costly interceptions. Guess who was the one qb who really didnt make any stupid decisions—> Gus Ferotte. We had one of our most recent “succesful” seasons…

My response
1) He has to be accurate and able to make every throw than an NFL QB needs to make. A quick release is important, too. He also must play smart football and know when the right/wrong times are to take chances. He also has to be tough – both mentally and physically. Also should be a hard worker – on the practice field, in the weight room, and in the film room.
2) Peyton Manning (though we don’t know how physically though he is because he doesn’t get hit often)
3) John Beck
4) He has every quality you look for in a QB. The thing is, he may not have shown it yet in the NFL. But if you know anything about his college years, you’d know that he possesses every quality I described above. He’s insanely accurate. He has a big-time arm (threw a harder pass at Combine than Jay Cutler did – but nobody seems to ever mention this). Beck also was told to lighten up his throws at BYU because they were too fast. He’s got a great release in terms of how quick he gets rid of the ball once he spots a receiver. He played a great game at BYU on two bad ankles that were heavily taped. Nobody outworked him this past offseason – either throwing on the field or in the weight room. And if you saw him at BYU, you’d know he’s also mentally tough. I could go on, but I’ll stop for now.

I agree
we need a quarterback who fits the mold of an accurate quarterback. We dont need a big time arm (jamarcus) who just slings it without accuracy. I also believe if given the chance with the new regime John Beck will excell. He is a “gym rat” he has worked harder than every single player. He has the mindset and the charm that you want in a QB.
But comparing him to a Peyton Manning…that is going a little far. Qb’s like that come into the league sparingly. Although I hope he is of that calibar, it is just too much. It really is. He has all the physical tools to become the next great qb it is just adaptation and the intangibles that need to fall in place. If they do, hell he wont be a Peyton but he’ll be the dolphins version of a franchise qb.
psst -> you other guys that are just browsing and reading are cowards…post and reply …this is the most passionate i have gotten about a single thread…

I wasn't comparing Beck and Manning..
...I just said that Manning has all the qualities I look for in a QB. And on the roster, Beck is the closest thing (skill set wise) to Manning. But that’s it. Don’t take my post the wrong way. Beck isn’t and likely never will be Peyton.

not something we need to be worried about this year still. I believe he’ll be our starter come week 1 but I don’t see him lasting there if the team isn’t embracing him as their leader.

WOW.....
Take a breath…....I remember reading something maybe even on this site that said the players very much preferred Lemon over Beck and seemed to play harder. I don’t remember the details….....I’m sure Parcells/Sporano would not allow something like that to happen under their leadership but it’s something to consider. If the team loves and embraces Beck and wants to do well for him and not let him down like they used to for Marino and the other great QB’s in history we’ll be better off. Does Beck command that kind of respect is the question.

This team is different...
last year the players did not respect Cam. Don’t bet that the players will do the same to Sparano who would chew them up and spit them back out so I agree with mophins. I think it was more of a statement to their coach than a knock on Beck IMO, but I thought the same thing last year.

I'd say
1) Smart as far as what his strengths/weaknesses are. Tough enough to play well hurt. A clear-cut leader.
2) Drew Brees (sure wish he was available when we floundered with CPep…huh? Oops.)
3) Beck – if he fails it’ll suck but if we throw Henne right into the fire he’ll fail too. Let him sit at least a year if Beck can’t get it done.
4) I think Beck is doing all he can to lead by example with all the extra work he’s doing. My concern, and maybe somebody can explain this, is that the team didn’t seem to want to play for him last year. I know it was an injury riddled team but wasn’t there something written about the players prefered Lemon? Let’s hope he can gain the teams trust and following.

good point
we have to give beck a chance to develop. We are all (even you Henne fans) are hoping beck pans out. He has that attitude and personality of such a likeable guy that you want him to do well.
lol who doesnt wish we took bree’s instead…whoever that jack ass was who got pep can suck it..
On the slim chance that beck doesnt pan out the way we want…we have still have options. We brought in a veteran for a reason in mccown and we drafted henne. The future isnt as dim as it was a few years ago and we have every reason to hope.

Here it goes
1) Great awareness and pocket presence. Doesn’t have to be a great runner but great feet in the pocket like Marino. Accuracy especially on the deep ball. A nice, tight spiral on the pass. Ability to read a defense and call audibles at the line of scrimmage. Toughness to take a hit.
2) Peyton Manning
3) John Beck
4) As Ron Jaworski pointed out at the 2007 Draft, Beck has good anticipation. He can throw the ball to the right place before his receivers make there cuts and before they are looking for the ball. He is accurate. The Pittsburgh game is a good example of this. Many of his passes were on the money but the receivers dropped them. Beck also has a very quick release.

lol what's with peyton
I know everybody loves the guy but isnt it too much to expect lol…i digress
Reading the defense, anticipation, and release are keys to being able to excell.
Quarterbacking (new word?) comes down to 3 things in my opinion:
1.Being able to feel the blitz and read the defensive scheme
2. Anticipate where the reciever will be and adjusting to any pressure
3. Having the physical ability and release to get the ball there.
Look at all great quarterbacks they did all things so succesfully. When you think about the bad ones you think about interceptions, sacks, and horrible decision making.
Interceptions -> not being able to anticipate
Sacks -> not being able to adjust to pressure
Overall Horrible decision making—> not being able to read the defense and anticipate the recievers
O yea—> thanks to whoever posted so far..means a lot

Actually, i will say Brady...
you can talk about accuracy and arm strength all day long, but what really counts is knowing when to throw what and to who. (go figure that one out…. :)
Brady reminds me of Joe Montana. He didn’t have the biggest arm, but he always knew where to throw the ball, and he made it look easy. Brady has that quality. when he makes the deep throw to Randy Moss, it is after he has set up the D with short slants and quick outs, gotten the running game going, and has gotten the D to cheat up… then BAM! he hits Randy on the fly off play action.
This is unlike the Culpepper-Moss connections in Minn. C-Pep had a big arm and would launch it, and make Randy go get it and out run and out jump the defenders.
So my #1 would be:
A QB who
- can effectively manage the game (no stupid TOs or Delay penalties, and knows when to audible)
- keeps Ds off balance
- is quick and accurate on al the short/intermediate stuff

we need a qb
1. with a strong, accurate, and quick fire arm. One who is a winner and smart but not scared to take a chances on being great. A leader who commands the respect of his teammates. a pressence on the feild who is a true student of the game
2.Big Ben
3.John Beck
4. His work ethic shows how he wants to be the leader earnning respect by playing all off season, getting to know the system without being discouraged, he already has the physical tools, if he stays courageous and takes chances hopefully our recievers will reward him. Big Ben did alot very young 22 superbowl winner i think? Take some chances and you could be great..but if your to cautious stay on the bench

2. Joey Harrington
3. Chad Henne

ehh
Must be joking about Harrington… and comparing him to Henne is a bit off. Harrington came from Oregon, not a very historic program, and certainly not an NFL pipeline by any stretch, and Harrington was the 3rd pick in the draft. Henne played for a football factory at Michigan, and started 4 years there. He was also chosen in the bottom half of rd 2. The expectations and pressures facing Henne are NOWHERE near what Harrington faced when he came in.

Tell ya who I like
1. A cerebral leader capable of carrying a drive by himself when the offense isn’t clicking. The QB should be able to create with his arm, with his head, and with his legs. Scramble ability. Able to run for the first down, big enough to withstand arm tackles and shake poor take downs.
2. Donovan McNabb
3. Josh McCown? Clearly Culpepper is the closest thing we’ve had (Marcus Vick? haha) and that… well that didn’t work out so well. I realize that with this type of QB you’re going to have to worry about a lot more physical pain and debilitation of the knees, as well as other injuries. These type of QB’s probably have a shelf life of no more then 7 or 8 years. Big Ben is a decent example as well.
4. Josh earns a starting spot with his experienced play and leadership. He has a career year with the Fins, winning a few games with Tom Brady like cluthcness and being considered for the Pro Bowl. Sadly, in December his knee goes bad, but lucky for us Marcus Vick needs a job!

No Weenies Allowed
1) The number one thing: Leadership. I want a quarterback that is cocky and can walk up to the line of scrimmage and ignore the defense’s taunts. I want a quarterback that can just look at a receiver who has dropped the ball and make them feel guilty.
We need a quarterback that is comfortable in the pocket and taking the hit while throwing. Obviously he should be able to make “all the throws” but instead of laser-like accuracy I’d prefer a decision maker who has the mindset to be aware of his throw’s implications. Laser-like accuracy would be nice too, but takes a back seat to awareness.
2) Ben Roethlisberger
3) Chad Henne
4) He has a lot of experience as a signal caller and the statistics that align with such experience are pretty convincing. He seems self-assured and tough. He has a strong arm and stands tall in the pocket. He’s not scared of contact.
I don’t dislike Beck but he reminds me (sorry Matty I) of Joey Harrington. Joey has a quick mind and can pick targets quickly, but his field awareness is the pits. Beck, even in very limited action, has shown better field awareness. His quick release and high-velocity ball also reminds me of what Harrington does well. Don’t get me wrong: I think Beck could be good. I just see that his potential downfall being that quick mind and timid presence in the pocket. Too many forced throws, accurate or otherwise.
In the end I think Beck is too high strung and nervous.
Actually, in the end I hope he turns out to be the second coming. Or third. However the Mormons work it. I just want the Phins to get a tough-guy who can win games and has the arm to win the big ones. That is all.

1.leadership is most important, good decisions second i ‘d say
2 Brette Favre/John Elway … loved the way they took whatever the game gave them and came back for more, with a smile no less…. in my opinion this is the kind of leadership that builds teams of legend, tho i cant say im impressed w/ the way things went in GB w/ brette
3.too early to say, but Beck has shown some resilience in the face of adversity
4. i feel that if he can transcend last year and turn things around he will have shown alot of ppl that he’s someone you can believe in and inspire faith in those around him to excel ‘beyond’.
