Jason Taylor Doesn't Love You...
...or me. In fact, he doesn't know any of us and he doesn't owe any of us a damn thing. He loves his wife and his kids. He loves his brother-in-law and probably some of his teammates, past and present. And that's it. He's just a guy with a job and a family, and he's trying to figure out what the best thing is for him to do at this point in his life. The company he has worked for his entire professional life has switched bosses for the fourth time. They are hiring younger guys to do his job and cutting loose the guys he has been working with since he graduated college. He only has so many productive years left and the number one goal he had set has become all but unattainable. He received an exciting new opportunity that showed him that a new life and career might be available, one that could last longer and continue to keep him living the life to which he and his family have grown accustomed.
I have always been very appreciative and respectful of Matty I, but I think the recent comparison of Jason Taylor to Nick Saban is ridiculous. Nick Saban was the coach, GM, and newly-appointed dictator-for-life of this franchise 3 1/2 years ago. He lost interest in the team and his responsibilities within 18 months of signing his contract. He alienated and ignored players and front-office personnel alike in a very short period of time. He lied methodically beginning halfway through his second season with the team and jumped ship at the first opportunity he was offered. As the literal figurehead of the entire franchise, his departure left everything in a shambles. It was also a very consistent move for this snake-oil salesman of a coach. Just ask all the nice people who cheer for Michigan State and LSU (and Alabama....soon... just you wait, you'll see).
Jason Taylor, meanwhile, has been a good soldier and loyal employee for the most poorly-run snake-bitten franchise since his entry into the league 11 years ago. He has secured his place as one of the five greatest Dolphins of all time. He has been a model citizen on and off the field. This year, for the first time ever, he has taken a non-football road during the off-season and drawn a little attention to himself in a positive way. Millions of people were discovering him for the first time ever and becoming fans. Meanwhile, the NFL and the Dolphins (save for some very small-print back-page coverage) virtually ignored his efforts. Back home, the writing was on the wall that this team was getting younger and his friends were finding work elsewhere. Rumors were flying that he was on the trading block. The new VP wouldn't address the issue. The new GM wouldn't talk to him. And this is the guy that was the model for a giant robot in London during the NFL's first foray into Great Britain just eight months ago.
This isn't comparing apples to oranges. This is comparing apples to steaming hot piles of dog crap.
If Jason Taylor does move on, either through retirement or trade, it does not take down the entire franchise the way losing a head coach/general manager does. It sucks to lose him, but Jason Taylor wasn't our ticket to the Super Bowl this year or the next (and probably not the next one after that, either...sorry). He is simply a great player on the downside of a great career who probably has enough in the tank to make a difference for a contender over the next 2 to 3 years. He has been handsomely compensated, for sure, and he is still under contract, but losing him does not break this franchise the way Saban's shenanigans did 1 1/2 years ago.
Personally, if he isn't traded, I think he shows up in the Fall and eases back into the game and everyone will hug each other and smile and act like nothing happened. And that's great by me. Really. As long as this team is on the right track (finally), that's all that matters. With or without Jason Taylor, this team is moving in the right direction for the first time since............1993?
One side note (and if you've read this far, kudos to you my good fellow), since he came into the league 11 years ago, Jason Taylor has shown a lot of enthusiasm for some bad coaches. He loved JJ, of course, who drafted him and then burned out and took a giant mustachioed dump on the team. He loved Wanny...ugh. He was all fired up about Saban...bleh. He even sang the praises for Cam in the early going. Not to disrespect the guy, but it does make one wonder if Jason Taylor has spent so much time in this fetid environment that he couldn't smell a winner if it farted in this face. Maybe his rejection of the Trifecta is a sign that we are on the winning path after all? Who knows?
Jason Taylor, if this is the end of your time in the Aqua and Orange, then good luck to you and thanks for the memories. You don't owe any of us a damn thing. You played like a champion from day one until the end, and you never offered excuses or threw any of the pieces of crap you were forced to play with (and for) under the bus. I hope you come back, but if you don't, then no hard feelings and I hope you shake your head and laugh while you're watching the Dolphins win the Super Bowl in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. As long as you don't retire as a Jet, Pat, or Bill, then you have secured your spot in the ring of honor and (I believe) the Hall of Fame.
Now let's read some more stuff about Philip Merling and Kendall Langford. And Jake Long. And Lex Hilliard and Jalen Parmele. I want to read about football...
Go Dolphins.

Great post.
I disagree in parts, but that’s what makes talking about things like this so much fun.
As far as the Saban/Taylor comparison, all I was getting at there was that Taylor flat out lied. Doesn’t that bother you a little? When asked what was next for him, he could have responded that he’d get back to football. He didn’t have to say he’d be back in Miami. But he did, for some reason, while having his agent tell the team that he wasn’t coming back, at least not until training camp is over. And in my opinion, a liar is a liar. Just because he was a great person, player, and teammate for years doesn’t mean his lie is less offensive or less wrong. He lied. Liar, liar, liar.
lol…I got carried away there for a second.
Moving on, the one thing you don’t address is why Taylor, a player under contract with the Dolphins (and being handsomely compensated by them), has the right to not show up for mandatory practices. Yes, he’s a great player. But that doesn’t mean he’s entitled to special treatment and it certainly doesn’t mean he’s entitled to a championship. I just went through this with another one of my favorite players a few months back (Jason Kidd). He demanded a trade, too, so he could play for a championship. But what gives these great athletes the right to “demand” anything? You signed a contract, so honor it.
Anyways, great post and some good food for thought and discussion.
2 great post
Oh the questions… Well, Did Jason lie on Mike and Mike? We know Jason asked to be traded before the draft and maybe the Dolphins brass tried, tried and failed. My opinion? Jason is worth a first round pick, but i’m biased. The NFL teams today will not give up a first round pick for any 13 year vet. Up to now Jason has been very vague as to what he is doing. One week he’s hinting he will play ‘somewhere’ and next we hear he’s coming back to Miami. Tony Sorano drops a bomb and shocks the masses by vaguely saying Jason will not be joining the team in any capacity in this upcoming off season. Is this Jasons idea? Is this a hook from the ‘Big Tuna’ (Mattys favorite nick name lol) What it comes down to is who’s lieing here. A week ago Tony says there is no rift and the situation was over blown! I’m not convinced anyone is lieing at this point because honestly there are not enough facts to say either side is to blame.. Yet.
Look for both side to end this situation soon for the Dolphins organization and the fans.
I am somewhat in between
Matty and lancelotlink on this one. I certainly don’t feel scorned by JT nor do I think he’s a blatant liar, and I wish him all the best if and when he does move on; but he is under contract and should be showing up for camp—if for nothing else to show off his wares for potential suitors.
i just hope this thing doesn’t drag on too long. At this point I am wishing this was done on draft day. Oh well.
The Jayfiss Report ...one fan's rants
I guess I'm not convinced...
...that he was lying. At the time he made his initial remarks, those very well might have been his plans. This is pretty new territory for Taylor, who has always been the employee-of-the-month in Dolphin land. Right now he seems caught up in a game that’s way too political and definitely over his head. Both sides are jockeying for position in the court of public opinion. Who knows how many pieces of conflicting advice he’s getting? I guess the reason it doesn’t bother me is that it all seems so immaterial to the real matter at hand, which is the rebuilding of the team. I’m not happy with the situation, but I am happy with the direction the team is heading. This is the worst thing the guy has ever done in his stellar career, and I’m glad he waited for a time when it made the least impact. Where we differ is that since he has been a “great person, player, and teammate for years”, I can forgive this. 1-15 was offensive to me. Wannstedt’s drafts were offensive to me. Nick Saban was offensive to me. This stuff with Jason Taylor? Not so much.
I do agree with you on the issue of players feeling entitled to play for contenders. I am purposefully ignoring it so far, because I have yet to hear this come from Taylor himself. It always comes from a reporter. If a player feels so entitled to this, then they should take the risk of “retiring”, giving up their fat contract, then re-enter the free market when league rules allow. See if any of these teams will take the risk on you after some time away from the game. Demanding trades does make me vomit a little (just into the back of my throat, not all the way out). In this regard, I guess I am giving him special treatment, but only because I haven’t heard or read anything that came directly from him. Still, I do expect to see him back on the field for Miami on September 7th. I don’t know why…the whole thing just smells like the Strahan situation to me.
Go Dolphins.
If I had a tagline, this would be it.

My Quick Take
I understand where you are coming from but I think this Jason Taylor drama is just one of many things that hurt us fans. I feel that the reason many of us fans are so angry and reluctant to see him go is because we are so hurt from all the recent changes. I grew up being a Dolphin’s fan. Looking at the roster now compared to what I grew up with, not including Taylor, who has been here since then? I even looked at this huge 2006 Miami Dolphins roster picture I have above my bed and looked at the first row with our most notable players. In the first row, the only player we still have is Feely. To make matters worse, I can only name 10 players that I even know on the picture. Seeing JT go is like seeing that youth and that face of the Dolphins that we all have come to love so much. Especially when you tie it in to the fact that he keeps telling us he is coming back and assuring us, he really wants out. I think that is what hurts the most. He may not love us but we sure damn love him.
Let this season BE GINN!
He's Not Gone Yet
He’s the one on an island with this stunt.
He won’t get 7 million and 8 million in Hollywood out the gate or behind a desk at ESPN.
He can’t turn his back on HOF considerations (I still maintain that he is on the bubble). For one, they mean a lot to his post NFL career.
Parcells can wait him out. That’s why they mention camp and not season. Jason has always been a grumbler in the pre-season and I won’t be surprised if he’s back for training camp despite all this.
I’m still hoping he is.
The alternatives have less sacks over 11 years than JT has in one.

heck he wont get a mil out of
hollywood… how much did the last Boz film make?
how about firejumper or whatever howie long’s film was name was?
let’s even 1 up that to shaq (who dwarf’s JT’s image) did shazam make anything?
who’s going to throw a boat load of money at some reality tv star? JT can dream of hollywood all he
wants, after all I dream of the senior golf curcuit, but neither is going to happen.

sorry to be a pessemist, but...
.... i was re-reading the Sporano stranscript when this little detail jumped out at me…
“So that’s what we know. Jason’s a player under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He knows that. Both parties are well aware of the information. That’s all I’m going to say about it. We’re going to talk about our players now. I’m not going to talk about another thing. What I’m going to tell you is that what I just told you is what I know. It’s what we know, and that being said, we need to discuss the current players on our team right now that have been busting their butt for nine weeks here.” T.S.
i just felt that this said it all, time to move on, i dont even want him back at this point, i dont even care ‘why’ ...its a really sad footnote to a great career, and i dont wanna disrespect the great J.T., but i feel a bit offended by this whole thing, the way it unfolded, the waffling, etc., ...for the integrity of the team, we need to try and let it go…i think our new staff is over it, and i think i am too. i just hope that players like J. Beck, J. Long and P. Merling ease the pain w/ expedience.
