Dolphins waive Drew Mormino
Today the Dolphins announced that they have waived guard/center Drew Mormino after failing his physical. Mormino was entering his 2nd season and was expected to compete for the starting guard spot opposite of Justin Smiley.
Instead, Mormino (who spent the '07 season on IR) will be searching for a new job.
For the Dolphins, this means a couple things. First, it shows that this new regime has no tolerance for players who are often injured. So everyone better get in shape and stay healthy. Second, it means Jake Long will get to wear the #77 that he wore at Michigan that was previously worn by Mormino.
Most importantly, though, it means that, as of now, the two players competing for the remaining starting spot along the offensive line will be two rookies, Shawn Murphy and Donald Thomas, and the inexperienced Ikechuku Ndukwe. I'd also expect a veteran or two to join the competition by the time training camp rolls around.
Thoughts on this move?

Why?
I feel stupid asking this but I can’t remember what injury he was out with last year…........Is this the guy that had a shoulder injury or something coming out of college?

WQAM Interview
Mormino was interviewed by WQAM recently and seemed to be fine from a health standpoint and was looking forward to competing for the starting guard.
He came off really disgruntled though. Talking kind of tough about Jake Long and the pursuit of jerzey #77. He sounded upset.
I think we definitely need to bring in a center/guard type to add depth.
Kind of a strange cut from depth standpoint. He must have been pretty out of shape.

Very unusual...
seeing as they basically have nothing but a bunch of rookies competing for the LG spot.
It might be one of those ‘we are sending a message to the players’ cuts, but it still seems odd when all you have left are two rookies – neither of which was drafted particularly high.

Is it me?
Or does it seem like we spend more time tearing down this team than building it. I feel like every decent player we have had we cut to make room for “better” players. Do these coaches just want to put there stamp on “my players, my team” at the expense of having some decent players and building from there? Do we have to strip it down to the ground every year?

Bottom Line
he failed his physical. I can’t ever remember a team keeping a player who failed a physical, but I could be wrong. He obviously wasn’t going to compete for playing time, or a roster spot for that matter, if he couldn’t pass a physical exam. I’m not worried about it because I believe one of the rookies would’ve ended up starting anyway to build some continuity on our OL for the next few years. Hopefully we can reload with a free agent or two before the start of the season, because depth is still an issue.

Agree with Little Nicky..
He must have failed his physical, otherwise why cut him? Bring him in to camp for depth and see if he learned anything sitting on the sidelines last year watching… Not sure they saved anything with this – hell he was a 6th or 7th rd pick if I recall last year.
I’d expect to see 1 or 2 vets come in before the season who didn’t survive cuts/youth movements with other teams. Not all that concerned about this cut. I think CC blew him up last year into something he might not have been – trying to motivate the vets. (Remember he did this with Ronnie Brown too last year)

yes he did
Little Nicky is correct he failed his physical… the reason cited was the docs didn’t thing the shoulder would/had healed….
so wil that in mind, its not a suprise on a rebuilding team to clear room for players who are able to compete…

Get rid of him
This is business and if he failed a physical after having like almost 8 months to get healthy then he has to go. This team is now sending a message get in shape or get out. Maybe he can go block for Flacco in Baltimore now. That would be interesting to watch :)
