Quick Hits: Dolphins cut 2; Ginn off return duties?

GINN BEING REPLACED AT KR?

There's an interesting little piece of information buried deep in a Sun-Sentinel article about the recent signings of a couple of undrafted free agent: Hawaii WR Davone Bess and Georgia Southern QB Jayson Foster.  The quote from the paper says:

Foster and Bess have been told they will compete for kick return roles, an indication the Dolphins are intent on lessening the workload of second-year receiver Ted Ginn Jr.

Foster is an electrifying runner (see here ) who is being brought in as a wide receiver and return man.  I'm a little surprised to see Bess was told he'll also compete for kick return duties, as he isn't as fast.  But he is quick, reminding me of a Wes Welker kind of return man.

The good news here is that this new regime does seem to want to lessen Ginn's workload, allowing him to focus on being the team's #1 receiver.  I just wonder if we are losing some value in Ginn because of how dynamic of a return man he can be.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

As long as Ronnie Brown isn't back returning kicks in the preseason (ouch, bad memory there).

DOLPHINS CUT TWO

As W NY Fins Fan points out, the Dolphins have released two players.  Quarterback Matt Baker was shown the door, which isn't a big shock.

A little more surprising is DT Steve Fifita.  Fifita saw action in 13 games last year for the Dolphins and seemed like he could make a decent project as a backup nose tackle.  But following the signing of numerous undrafted free agents, I suppose Fifita's services aren't necessary anymore.

not that I need to start anymore battles but

~ * little more surprising is DT Steve Fifita* ~

Matty, you did see him play last year right? it should be that much of a surprise, unless, of course, you are a fan of the 5 year drop d-lineman.

jalen parmele

why isnt parmele in the discussion for return man. accordin to the dolphins site he had a career 25 kickoff returns for 628 yards (25.1 average) and a TD.
not bad?

Probably because

they plan on giving him a pretty decent workload in the beginning of the year to work Ronnie in slowly off his injury. And we may be looking to dump Ricky at some point for draft picks, so you don’t wanna kill your other back using him as a KR… Just speculating though

I'm alittle dissapointed

we all know that Ginn is a very dangerous returner, Andy Reid shat himself that day and he gave many other teams a scare

Foster

Looks exciting. He’s listed from 5’7” to 5’9”. Not the Parcells prototype in size but does fit the “football player” mold. He played three different positions in three different systems.

It looks like Bess and Foster will be competing for the same job. Foster looks like the better return man and Bess a better slot receiver. May the best man win.

I really hope they dont...

determine Bess’ roster spot based on KR duties. He would be much more valuable as a slot reciever than a KR, and his skill set doesn’t lead to huge plays. He’s more of a Wes Welker type, sure handed, quick feet, reliable target, gets open underneath, picks up YAC yards and first downs.

Foster I think has a bright future in the league and I hope its with us. He has one of the quickest pairs of feet I’ve ever seen, and he has enough speed to compete at the NFL level. One of the things I notice about him on tape is that he NEVER looks back when he breaks. NEVER. It’s a quality you see in guys with elite speed and playmaking ability. Watch tape of Hester, Ginn, Adrian Peterson, and even (dare I say it?) Barry Sanders. They break through and don’t look back. They know that nobody is catching them and they focus on getting to the endzone as fast as possible.

Ginna s a returner

I thought he did pretty well as a returner. He did have 2 or 3 called back by penalty as well. Isn’t this why he was drafted in the first place (to be a returner)????

yes...

...but when you become the #1 receiver on the team, they look to lessen your load. Perhaps the plan is to have Ginn return punts but not kicks. Who knows?

by Matty I on Apr 30, 2008 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

really

I thought he was just a little better then horrible last season returning punts…
off the top of my head… he had happy feet and dropped/muffed a couple… the most memorable to me was the
one in the 1st quarter against the bills that pretty much opened the flood gates and got the lime benched for the lemon…

If there was a duty to keep ginn on, i’d say KR since when he was back there they pretty much squib kicked it most of the time
and miami would get decent field postion before the 2 penalties and the sack moved the ball inside the 20…

Jayson Foster looks outstanding!

Wow! I like this guy better than Ginn. Ginn doesn’t make guys miss like that.

I went back and watched the youTube highlights of Ginn, and counted one guy that he juked. He can kinda follow blockers, but he needs a crease and then he can use his straight ahead speed to run away from everyone.

But Foster…. wow! This kid reminds me of Barry Sanders. I was always a big Barry fan, even though I wasn’t a Lions fan, just because I loved to watch him play. He had great vision, could read the running lanes developing during a play, and was shifty enough to juke a guy or two to get into the open. This kid looks like he has that same vision and quickness. The big question is how will he look going against faster defenses? He is only listed as running 4.45 in the 40, which is fast, sure. But I imagine he looked a lot faster going against some of the Div I-AA opponents.

BTW, I don’t mean this to say that Ginn won’t be a good WR. I think he has a very good shot of being a deep threat if improves his route running a bit. I would also see him get a bit stronger, to beat the jam. But he can run past defenses, and seems to have pretty good hands. He just can’t make people miss, and usually goes down at first contact. I think Foster would be a better returner.
