How will the Beck pick go down

<!--StartFragment -->

I'm one of a few around here who believe that Bill Parcells has spoken, and the days of John Beck being the future of the Miami dolphins are essentially over.

When Miami selected Henne with the 57th pick, they began *again* the new, or next or the new future (you get the idea), era of the dolphins. Since there can be only one future QB of the dolphins and Henne *was* chosen by the current admin and Beck wasn't, it's pretty clear, to me anyway, that Henne will be the future of the team....

Why was this? Well my theory is BP's ego won't let any part of the dolphins turnaround be attributed to his predecessors.... think of it this way even if Beck led the dolphins  to the super bowl people would credit parcells with the turn around, but people would always say/attribute the turning point of the franchise with the Beck selection by randy mueller... So parcells needs to remove all linkage to the past that Beck represents so that he can have sole credit for the upcoming turn around...

Other reasons cited by some for the switch, are Beck's lack of leadership last season, his turnover/fumble issues, and concerns about his hand size and physical build compared to the larger QB's that parcells tends to favor....

Likely we'll never know why Parcells chose not to give Beck a fair shot at QB, but it's clear that with the specter of pick number 57 over his shoulder, even if Beck starts, it'll always be with the understanding that it's just a matter of time before Henne gets his chance.

With the idea in mind that Henne *is* the future of the dolphins, it's best to make the focus of the 2008 dolphins 'the development of Henne'. No one, or not too many rational people, are expecting the dolphins to contend this year since history leads us to believe 1-15 doesn't turn around that quickly. So unlike last season, all effort should be designed to get Henne in games early in the season, at least for some series, and give him some opportunities to succeed and develop a rapport with his team so that he may start a number of games and get some of the needed experience (aka lumps) that will be necessary for him to become a good QB in the not too distant future. Sadly this should be at the expense of J Beck, who impressed me with moxy last pre season, but BP chose not to give him a *fair* shot when he took Henne at #57. There are only a finite number of snaps in a week, and as Cam proved with Beck last season you can't get a rookie ready to play by not giving him any first team snaps until week 8. So even if Henne doesn't start the season as #1 he should get %50, or close to it anyway, of the practice snaps.

Miami needs to know if Henne will be the QB of the future, *this* season, because they need to have a QB before they turn this mess around and if he's not Parcells will need to get one next draft.

So based on this premise, how will the drafting of Beck go down in history? will it be considered a wasted pick on par with the Feely trade? Will it been seen as a good attempt to correct the faults of the huizenga's ownership that just didn't have the time to play out?
Will it be seen as a disaster, because he'll find success elsewhere, or is it just life with the dolphins after Marino?

Poll
How will the drafting of Beck be seen
  • sadly never given a chance
  • a disaster on the scale of the Feely trade
  • he'll succeed with the phins
  • a mistake to have let him go - he'll succeed elsewhere
  • JJ, Wanny, Saban, Cam - why can't anyone find a QB

Now I kind of agree with you but...

not completely.

I think Beck will get a ‘chance’ but the thing is, being so-so or mediocre (ala Trent Green last year) won’t cut it.

In most situations, young QB’s get a sort of grace period in which they can make mistakes, bad plays, etc – and the coaches accept it and chalk it up as ‘development’. That’s the thing I think Beck won’t get from this staff, not with Henne on board. Why would Beck get that sort of development period when Henne is 3 years younger and is the guy this regime chose to be the QB of the future? Beck hasn’t looked any more ready to play really than Henne will probably be. Plus McCown has much more starting experience than Beck.

The way Beck could stick around is if, first, he clearly beats out the other two in the QB contest. Then he plays well and consistently as a starter during the regular season and follows what basically was the Derek Anderson formula last year. Anderson wasn’t OK or solid, he had a pro bowl season tossing 29 TD’s and leading his team to 10 wins and earning himself a fat new contract. If he had been average or so-so, you could bet he would have been on the bench very quickly and Quinn would have taken over.

That to me, is the path for John Beck to stay here and entrench himself as the starter.

If he fails to win or keep the starting job, then he’ll be yet another nail in the cam-cam/mueller coffin of mediocrity.

Agreed

I think Beck will be given a chance. He’ll win the QB starting job and be mediocre. Tony will pull him after the 1st few games in favor of Henne. They’ll then trade Beck for a low draft choice at the end of the season.

Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

Slicing Lemon's here

btw, i’m gonna gloss Beck the Lime since he’s going to be a lesser version of last season’s lemon….

Since, I think we all agree that Beck isn’t going to get very much of a shot to play this season, I’d like to add to my belief that he’ll be gone before the season starts…

Clearly BP loves this guy and even if he’s listed as a receiver, you know BP is eyeing him as QB #3 and what will 3 of the 4 QB’s on the roster have that Beck doesn’t have … BP wanted them.

You know Neo...

the more I think about the people involved, the history, and intangibles, I tend to believe your scenario of Henne taking over after a few games is likely to happen..

Although it might actually

be McCown starting the season instead of Beck. Either way, I think Henne will be the starter before season’s end.
