Undrafted Free Agents
I figured since its tough to find news reports on UDFA's, I would start a fanpost for anybody to post news on some guys we've signed. I hope we grab some guys at wideout, OLB, and in the secondary...
According to resman at the end of the Day 2 Overflow Thread, we already signed Davone Bess WR from Hawaii. He posted a link to the story in a Hawaii paper here. So thats one guy a few of us were looking at with a draft pick.
I'll update if I find anything, and I encourage everybody to post a comment here if they see a signing.

Dolphins sign WR Davone Bess
Wide receiver Davone Bess, who signed with the Miami Dolphins;
Bess will join a pair of former Warrior players with the Dolphins.
Samson Satele was drafted in the second round and became the team’s starting center. Running back Reagan Mauia was a sixth-round pick and started.
Last year, the Dolphins drafted Ohio State receiver/kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. with their No. 1 pick.

I like what I see.. He will make the team and he will contribute this season. He catches everything near him and knows what to do with the ball in his hands. I would wager that he starts the season as the slot guy.

Poppinga Signs With Miami
PROVO, Utah (April 27, 2008)—During the 2008 NFL Draft, linebacker Kelly Poppinga kept hearing the Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins were most interested in his services. While neither team drafted him, both teams had standing free-agent offers on the table by early Sunday evening.
“It was a tough decision,” Poppinga said. “They both had identical offers and I was really leaning towards Seattle, but at the last second, and I mean literally at the last second, I decided to sign with Miami. If was a really tough decision and I really liked Seattle. Ultimately, I think Miami is the better fit.”

Jayson Foster
Dolphins QB Jayson Foster (Georgia Southern
Despite his smallish size this mighty mite is explosive, elusive, and speedy. Foster had a rather eventual college career as three different coaches bounced him around playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver and kick returner. In 2007, college football’s ultimate utility man stepped under center producing 1,844 yards and passing for 1,203 as a senior, joining the rare 1,000 yards passing and rushing in the same season club.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/stats?playerId=159528
camp kicker I would imagine.. 6’2 207, even Parcells kickers are big lol
He had a 54 yard FG last season and he hit 80% or better for his last two seasons at Montana.

If he gets touchbacks...
Then I’m all for him being the kicker. I know Feely was good at FG’s but if this guy can make over 80% and kick ones of over 50+ and help out the kick coverage teams by getting kickoffs in the end zone, then he should be the kicker.

amen
kicker was another huge blunder for muleron last season…. sheeze I was so tired of watching teams get the ball at the 40 because they couldnt’ kick it deep and had to squib kick it…. and the coverage team was even terrible with that … they should have just kicked it OB and saved the trouble….
Feely has to go and they need a new punter too….letting jones go was a disaster.

good write up on Mulligan.. Seems like a beast blocking, but not so much catching the ball. I don’t think he makes the team unless he is a monster on special teams.
OL Daren Heerspink (Portland State) 6’5 310
can’t find anything really about this guy.. other than he was recruited as a DL, and became OL as he bulked up.. Jerry Glanville was his coach his senior year.

I have to think
we won’t be signing anybody in the secondary unless a serious player gets cut. We’ll be standing pat with Allen Lehan Goodman and Nathan Jones at CB, and Allen Bell Daniels Crocker and Davis at safety. I know we sure could use some more talent, but there will be guys in the draft next season if we can’t get 4 solid players out of the 9+ guys on the roster now.

plus anyone signed at CB right now would strictly be a project, and not a step in and improve the defense guy…
nicky’s right that they’ll watch the waiver wire and see if they can get anyone who is an improvement after the cuts.

FB Rolly Lumbala (Idaho)

More info on Lumbala
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=157719
Outside of having a cool ass name, hes another big body. I think this spells doom for Mauia, as we now have 4 FB’s on the roster. This is another guy that does not fumble, but his carries decreased every year he was at Idaho. I’m guessing he was converted to a FB starting his junior year and took it over full time as a Senior. I don’t think he makes the roster because of Grigsby and Hilliard, but who knows?

I think Lumbala's versatility (experience as RB, H-Back, TE, and FB)
gives him the leg up against Mauia. I think Ricky Williams’ unreliability assures Rolly at least a place on the practice squad (if Ricky gets suspended, Rolly’s immediately promoted and Hilliard becomes the 3rd RB).
If he beats out Hilliard as a fullback, I think they try to sneak Hilliard on the Practice Squad or maybe they try to trade Ricky if Hilliard is legit. I think Ricky’s addiction baggage becomes a big issue.

Thanx
I didn’t know he had the versatility that does change my opinion a bit. I still think the free agent and draftee fullbacks have a leg up on him, and I would guess Mauia is gonna be released soon. Also, between Ronnie, Ricky, Parmele, and Patrick Cobbs as RB’s, 2 other FB’s other than Mauia, and 4 TE’s (Fasano, Ryan, Martin, and Peelle) there just may not be room for Lumbala. I wouldn’t be against dumping Peelle, but I still don’t know if that’s enough. Sounds like he has a chance though.

ESPN Insider
lists him at 5’11 191 lbs with a 40 time of 4.38. Good speed and decent size for a UDFA CB.
Yahoo! Sports had him listed as a small-school prospect for the “upcoming” draft back in December. And they write…
Scorpio Babers, Sam Houston State – Babers did not play this season after off-field issues. He was all-conference as a junior with 46 tackles and eight pass breakups. He has verified 40 times as fast as 4.35 to 4.39 at 5-10, 190 pounds.
Apparently his off-field issues are academic and not criminal.
He also worked out at UTEP’s pro day, recording 40 times of 4.36 and 4.37, a vert jump of 33 in., and a broad jump of 10’4. If nothing else, he’s athletic.

Did anyone see this?
It is an article on rivals.com of the so-called ‘all-undrafted team’, notice Bess is on the list!:
The NFL Draft has come and gone.
There were 252 selections over the two-day period, but several college standouts never heard their names called.
In fact, one could put together a solid team from among the players who weren’t drafted over the weekend. So, we did just that. Here’s a look:
OFFENSE
QB Paul Smith, Tulsa
He’s undersized (6 feet 1), but he threw for 5,065 yards and 47 touchdowns as a senior. He also ran for 13 TDs.
RB Yvenson Bernard , Oregon State
He was an ultra-productive back for the Beavers, but a lack of size and breakaway speed kept him from being drafted.
RB Dantrell Savage , Oklahoma State
He’s a burner with big-play potential, but he lacks size and strength.
WR Davone Bess , Hawaii
Despite posting huge numbers with the Warriors, he’s considered a “system” receiver. His lack of elite speed hurts, as well.
WR Adarius Bowman , Oklahoma State
He was productive on the field, but had a horrible postseason, including an awful performance at the Combine. His latest off-the-field issue clearly was the last straw.
TE Dorien Bryant , Purdue
Like Bess, he’s considered a “system” receiver. He lacks size and doesn’t possess breakaway speed.
OT Pedro Sosa , Rutgers
He’s a bit undersized (6-4/300) to play tackle in the pros (he might get a shot at guard). Sosa also has been bothered by injuries and had knee surgery in March.
OT Eric Young , Tennessee
Young is another who may be a bit undersized (6-4/308) for tackle in the NFL, and he could get a free-agent shot at guard. His biggest problem is showing he’s over a severe leg injury that caused him to miss more than half of the 2007 season.
OG Robert Felton , Arkansas
He’s a powerful run blocker, but he’s not all that athletic and needs help in pass-blocking. On the plus side, he has played all five line positions. That versatility will help him stick as a free agent.
OG Adam Kraus , Michigan
A two-time All-Big Ten player and a three-year starter, but he was overrated a bit in college. He needs to add bulk and strength. He isn’t all that athletic.
OC Fernando Velasco , Georgia
Was the leader of a young Bulldogs offensive line last season, a line that helped paved the way to an 11-win season. But he’s considered a raw prospect at center, and his lack of athleticism doesn’t help, either.
K Art Carmody , Louisville
Extremely accurate but lacks a strong leg. Probably wouldn’t be used to kick off in the NFL.
DEFENSE
DE Bryan Mattison , Iowa
He was a three-year starter for a solid defense in the Big Ten, but though he has a great motor and is productive, he might be a half-step slow and lacks ideal size (a bit under 6-3).
DT Eric Foster , Rutgers
A second-team All-American as a senior, his lack of height (he’s 6-2) is a big concern whether he stays at tackle or moves outside to end.
DE Darrell Robertson , Georgia Tech
It’s surprising he wasn’t drafted. He has good quickness and can run sideline-to-sideline, but he’s a bit small (245 pounds) and can be overpowered when teams run right at him.
LB Vince Hall , Virginia Tech
A solid player who has good instincts, a great motor and packs a wallop. But he’s undersized and doesn’t run all that well.
LB Erin Henderson , Maryland
Extremely productive with good size. He’s aggressive and plays with a mean streak. But he’s considered a half-step slow, isn’t a great athlete and has had injury problems.
LB Ali Highsmith , LSU
A three-year starter for some mighty fine defenses, Highsmith plays hard and can move. But he’s too short for some teams, has trouble shedding blocks and isn’t that instinctive.
LB J Leman , Illinois
Productive four-year player for the Illini and a great team leader. Has adequate size, too. But he lacks speed, isn’t a great athlete and has suspect coverage skills.
CB Marcus Walker , Oklahoma
Played a lot of football for the Sooners and has good size and speed. But he has poor hands and lacks instincts.
CB Jonathan Zenon, LSU
Zenon produced as a Tiger and has good size and other attributes. Alas, the one attribute he’s missing is speed. Still, he could stick as a dime back and/or a special-teams player.
S Marcus Griffin, Texas
The first-team All-Big 12 honoree was productive for the Longhorns but he lacks ideal size (he’s a shade under 6-0), doesn’t have great speed and isn’t all that athletic.
S Jamie Silva, Boston College
He was superb as a senior, earning numerous All-America honors, but he’s slow and isn’t a great athlete.
P Brett Kern , Toledo
He was second in the nation as a senior, averaging 46.1 yards per boot. The only knock may be that he was inconsistent before 2007

Don’t know if he will make the team but jeez, look at the highlight footage, the guy is small but suoer talented, juking guys right and left, spin moves, also making sweet accurate passes 30 yards. Isn’t he a bit small for special teams? Maybe kick returns…

I still say Martin and Peelle don't count.
Both should be released. Can’t block. Can’t catch. I’m pretty sure that means you can’t be a TE.
