2008 NFL Draft Open Thread

08draft_medium

AND IT'S FINALLY HERE!

The 2008 NFL Draft is finally here.  After months of speculation and debate, the time for teams to take action is now.  And while the intrigue of the Dolphins' #1 overall pick has been killed thanks to the pre-draft signing of Jake Long by the Dolphins, there are still plenty of things to watch as this weekend unfolds.

So what will I specifically be looking for on day one of the draft?  I'll be very interested in seeing if the Dolphins do draft a QB at any point on this first day.  I don't think they will.  And if they do indeed pass on a QB, does that mean this new regime is giving John Beck a vote of confidence?  Of course, I'll also be interested in seeing if this regime can indeed swing a deal for another 1st or 2nd round pick by shipping Jason Taylor out of Miami.

Speaking of the Jason Taylor saga, Armando Salguero is at it again.  Apparently he has sources nobody else does, writing that he knows for a fact that Taylor is desperately trying to get out of Miami:

He definitely wants out. Very badly, in fact. And it remains unclear what he might resort to if he doesn't get his way.

If that sounds serious, it's because it is serious. It is more serious than those days when Taylor didn't like Nick Saban initially. It is more serious than when he didn't like Cam Cameron for not deferring to him.
Today Jason Taylor is a man who feels personally insulted by the Dolphins. That is a result of a visit last week when he visited the team while on break from his dancing. During that visit Taylor was treated coldly by both coach Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells. He apparently feels disrespected.

And that's really just the tip of the iceberg.  That's why I can't wait to get this thing rolling.

And be sure to join in the live conversation below in the "comments" section.  If you haven't done so already, then now is a great time to create a new account .  When you do, you can then get involved in the conversation below in the comments.  And you should be very excited to see this new "live, auto-refreshing comments " section in action.  New comments simply pop up in "real time" without any reloading of the page necessary.

The next step in rebuilding this proud franchise begins today!!

**UPDATE 1:25pm** Interesting comments by the Palm Beach Posts' Edgar Thompson:

Word out of Jacksonville is the Jaguars no longer are interested in Jason Taylor.

The Dolphins wanted the Jags’ first-round pick (No. 26), the Jags offered one of their third-rounders (Nos. 71 or 89).

No one blinked. Now any chance for a deal seems to be dead.

**UPDATE 4:02pm** It seems Thompson's above report was accurate, as the Jags have traded up to take Derrick Harvey to fill their pass-rushing need.

I don't know

Didn’t I read somewhere that Sporano was texting JT after each dancing performance and supporting him? Sounds like somebody is trying to stir the pot here. I don’t see them disrespecting JT in any way. I do believe they’ll get something worked out to trade him but I don’t think it’s as filled with drama as people are trying to make it out to be.

Another 1st rounder

JT goes for a 2nd and Fins package 2 2nds for a 1st and we take… er the crystals ball’s has fogged up.

Like Matty...

the most uncertain and intriguing parts ot today’s draft are whether Miami takes a QB in rounds 1-3 AND if JT gets traded.

by Natalya on Apr 26, 2008 12:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not counting on a QB

and I hope we don’t just give away JT we need to get good value whether its a low first (doubt it now) or a 2nd and 4/5th.

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 26, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

At least a 2nd this year plus 4/5th or maybe a 3rd next year with performance incentives to maybe move up to another 2nd? Like if JT records 10 plus sacks or something. I’d rather have the picks this year but it’s starting to seem like we should take what we can get within reason. Obviously no reason to just give him away.

QB?

I believe Miami will draft a QB with one of their 2nd round picks.

Yesterday’s trade for Dallas’ starting ILB (or MLB) and TE, that satisfied two needs with one pick. The LB was the big need – to fill the spot vacated by Zach Thomas’ departure. That, IMO, means the team will not take a LB in the 2nd round but instead focus on QB and another need in round #2.

For JT, I’d like to see Miami get a 1st or a 2nd & one other pick – a 4th or 5th rounder. As it is now, after the Dolphins pick the 3rd round (at #64 or #65), the Dolphins do not pick again until #196 or #197 – in the 6th round (which was swapped with Dallas).

by NumberOneFan on Apr 26, 2008 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point on the midround picks

It’s going to be a long wait from #64 until our 6th rounder. Of course, we can pick up an additional 5th by moving down a few spots from #64, which will be a pick in high demand.

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think JT

DOES get traded (I dunno why) not saying it will be for this year draft picks, but before the start of the season. Also I wouldn’t be suprised to see the Fins draft QB Henne if he is available when they pick next time. Again not really sure I like the idea, but it wouldn’t shock me.

You savvy?

One issue I have about this later starting time

...is that more and more leaks about picks keep coming out. ESPN’s Michael Smith has already reported that it’s believed Chris Long will go #2 to the Rams, Matt Ryan will go 3rd to Atlanta, and the Raiders will take Darren McFadden at #4.

Of course, this could all be bullsh*t. But if it isn’t, then the draft is losing some of it’s “mystery” by having this later time.

I wonder if they will think of changing it back to a 12 pm start (or even a 1 pm start) if they don’t like how this year plays out.

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 1:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well how reliable is Michael Smith?

sometimes hes on the money and sometimes he misses badly.. so he could just be hearing a couple things and trying to first to “break” the story, when in reality he’s just running with a rumor. Or he could be the only media member who GM’s talk to during the draft.. What sounds more logical?

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 26, 2008 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well we'll find out soon enough.

Adam Schefter is also reporting the Rams pick, though. So that’s kind of a buzzkill.

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea

I know Schefter’s usually on the money… So I guess there could be some more format changes coming next year.. the last thing the league wants is for the draft to lose its suspense

No and no…though I wouldn’t be totally shocked if Miami did take a QB like Henne

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope

I really hope not. I hope we don’t take a QB on the first day at all. If we do I hope the “interest’ in Henne and Flacco was a smokescreen and we end up taking Brian Brohm. He is the only one I see as having more to offer than John Beck.

If we are going to take a QB Brohm would be the best guy to come in and step up during the season if Beck and McCown flounder.

by GatorPhan on Apr 26, 2008 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well not "official,"

But it seems if the Rams do keep the pick, Chris Long will be their guy. However, Schefter said the Ravens are trying to swing a deal with St. Louis for the #2 pick so they can take Ryan.

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who would they take at 8 though?

Dorsey and Long would probably both be gone (?)

by GatorPhan on Apr 26, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably move down

I think they would bust ass to move down and grab Brohm/Henne/Flacco in the mid to late 1st round. If they can’t move down, they take either Sed Ellis or whoever they deem to be the top CB.

RUMOR ALERT

Rumors are beginning to circulate that the Dolphins are close to a deal with the Bucs, sending Jason Taylor to Tampa for their 2nd rounder (#52 I believe).

Again, just a rumor. But you never know…

by Matty I on Apr 26, 2008 2:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hopefully thats not all

if they throw in a 4th round or 5th round I think its a decent deal, but we should hold off until the first round is over in case somebody makes a late call…

by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 26, 2008 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

With the premium placed on pass rushers now, there’s plenty of teams looking hard for them. If someone is targeting, say, Phillip Merling, and he doesn’t fall far enough for them, they may be calling up Miami late in the 1st round trying to make a last minute trade.

the people that dont want to trade JT today. A second round pick is a definite starter on this team, and hopefully would outplay JT by about 10 more years. JT to Tampa for 52 is enough for me.

The problem is...

how can you get fair value for one of the best defensive players in the league? Especially since hes 33 its hard to get a fair deal. But you have to get more than a 2nd round pick. He could play at a high level for another 4 years, and help a team win 1 or 2 Super Bowls. If he really has 4 solid years left he can be around for our run at the tail end of BP’s rebuild. I think a 2nd and 4th/5th is fair.

Smith should've stayed one more year and gained a little more bulk.

It would’ve helped his draft stock a lot. Though he could definitely still be a late round steal.

I dunno

I was part of the group calling him stupid when he said that he was staying. He gets the most carries in all of college and it was a blessing he had yet to get hurt. I think he needs to go as soon as possible while he is healthy.

In hindsight though, I would love if he had stayed. We finally have gotten a monster schedule we can make noise in and our star that brought us here will not be with us. It would have definitely gotten him recognized.

mcfad

I think he is the best athlete but I do think things will come up in his career, he is surrounded by a questionable familiy and once they get money its a dangerous situation. I think a lot of these RB’s are going to be studs.

Doubtful

I am doubtful that our FO is happy with our RB’s, ronnie is coming off a knee, rw is a “herbal supplement” away from taking the year off, and L-Book is good but cant carry the load. So in a deep draft lets take an insurance RB in 2/3 round. this will be a running team and we need to have a good suppy of rb’s.

give us the 1st rounder and get a Pro-Bowler and keep the rest of your 1st day draft. Or Give up your entire 1st day draft and get a unproven kid. Hmmmm

On the Jags picking Harvey...

You have to consider a few things. For one, they already have Reggie Nelson there, the familiar face will help Harvey’s transition to the NFL.

Two, Harvey is probably the best speed rusher in this draft. The Jags needed a speed rusher. I’m actually pretty happy to see them being active to get who they need to be successful.

Please, stop focusing on the idea of a "reach"

The people who determine what is or isn’t a “reach” is the media and commentators. The draft isn’t about taking players according to Mel Kiper’s board, it’s about taking the best player for the positions you need.

So, there’s really no such thing as “a reach.”

no BIG surprises yet. Probably the biggest move was the Jax trade up for Harvey – they gave up a lot but Harvey is a quality player. The NO-NE trade was easy to see coming up, but again, no surprise there.

If they pick another Wide Receiver, the city of Detroit will probably make a forcible coup on the Lions building and personally carry Matt Millen and throw him into Lake Michigan.
