The next year that the Dolphins will be in the playoffs is...

This is a discussion that me and coworker were having earlier today. How soon do you think the Dolphins will be in the playoffs?

Now, I've been a Dolphin fan for my entire life, but I'm also a realist/pessimist. I honestly do not think that the Dolphins will even sniff the playoffs before the 2014 season. Even with Parcells, even if Sparano works out to be the next great coach, and even if Jon Beck becomes an elite QB, I just can't see it happening.

My coworker is a Jaguars fan, but apparently has more faith in Parcells, because he not only thinks that we'll be in the playoffs for the 2010 season, but thinks that we'll be a Super Bowl contender in 2011.

Three seasons to turn a 1-15 team into a playoff contender? And only four to go to the Super Bowl? I think he's crazy. Especially when you consider how tough the AFC is right now.

What do you think?

2014?
I am a realist also, but it doesn't take 6 years to rebuild a franchise, if you have people who know what they're doing.  I think we are in the playoffs in 2010 or 2011.

Is it out the relam of possibility
that we make the playoffs in 2009? I wouldn't think so. Parcells has shown he can do it. But I'm going on a safer bet and say 2010. I'll even go out on a limb and say we'll be contending for a playoof spot for the next 5 or so years afterward as well.
"It all starts with the Dolphins," an executive with another team said Sunday, "and not a single person here has any idea what they're going to do."

I think we can make the playoffs in 2009
but making a serious run deep into the postseason will be later.

2010
I went 2010, but I would not be totally shocked if we were close to playoff caliber in 2009. It really depends on how they handle this draft and if Beck or another QB develops.

I'd agree with you guys....
...if Miami was in the NFC. To go to the playoffs in 2009 when you're contending against the AFC seems a little far fetched to me, especially when you consider that our our #5 Wild Card seed was 11-4. The Pats and Colts won't be bad teams anywhere in the near future, the Chargers and Steelers are always in there, the Jags are going to be making a serious push as a Super Bowl contender probably in the next 2 years, and now we have to worry about the Browns and Titans as they improve to battle it out for the #6 seed.

I really just can't see it happening. Not in the AFC.

Like many have already said
I went with 2010.  I think it is feasible for a team with a competent front office and solid coaching to improve by 3 wins/year.  That makes us 4-12 in 2008, 7-9 in 2009, and 10-6 in 2010.  I know 10-6 doesn't guarantee a playoff spot but we would definitely be in the hunt.  So I went with 2010.  But I wouldn't be shocked if it was 2009 or 2011.  Way before 2014 though, IMO.
