Which Free Agent do you want the Dolphins to target?

I am wondering which free-agent the fans would like the Dolphins to go after.  Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Dolphins making a push for Berrian even though we need more of a possession receiver imo.  But Berrian is a young veteran receiver that has star potential.  A weapon that could only help Beck.

Side note
The Dolphins on Friday signed cornerback Joey Thomas, who has been out of the NFL the past two years but is familiar to new assistant head coach Todd Bowles.

The Green Bay Packers chose Thomas (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) out of Montana State with the 70th pick of the 2004 NFL Draft.

He played 15 games as a rookie but a series of penalties and blown coverages led the Packers to waive him during his second season.

He was picked up by the New Orleans Saints, who cut him right before the 2006 season.

Thomas went to camp with the Dallas Cowboys last year in hopes of becoming their fifth cornerback for Bowles, who was the secondary coach. Thomas was among the last round of cuts.

- Tim Graham   Palm Beach Post

Bit more:

Thomas was drafted out of Montana State University in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. While playing a minor role in the Packers defense in his rookie year, his impressive play in the 2005 minicamps had Thomas in prime position to outseat fellow second year corner Ahmad Carroll for the No. 2 cornerback position. He ended up starting one game in Week 2 for the Packers before being relegated to nickleback, as before.

Thomas' play took a severe downturn after the Packers' 2005 bye week. In Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings, he allowed Minnesota wide receiver Marcus Robinson out of bounds, stopping the clock on a critical last minute Vikings drive that ended up costing the Packers the game. After embarrassing himself by falling down on a play after committing a critical hands to the face penalty against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8; Thomas was benched and rookie Mike Hawkins took his place. Thomas was later waived by Green Bay on November 2nd, 2005 He was then picked up by the New Orleans Saints on November 3rd, 2005.

none of the above really
of a the guys listed, i would maybe have to go with a guy like berrian... a guy with good potential who we don't have to break the bank for. bryant johnson woud be another..

i would love to have asante samuel, but he is gonna get crazy $$ from somebody... more than the $80M that Nate Clements got last year. I don't know if it is wise to sink that much money into any one player right now-- except maybe a franchise QB.. but that won't happen via FA this year, obviousy.

javon walker i would pass on.. talented guy, but he has wound up being somewhat of an attitude problem everywhere he's been.

faneca would be nice, but at this point i would like to build the line through the draft, and develop the young guys we have..

and briggs we'll get a ton of cash from somebody too.. don't think it should be the fins.

the fins are more than one or two players away from being a contender. i think the best scenario is to go low-risk in free agency, and buid through the draft. save the cap space for when they are one player away, and then break the bank to get that guy- whoever he is.

Pretty much
agree with everything Jay posted.

It's time to spend a year playing and evaluating the utes.

Yup
Faneca - 31 year old guard? Are we suddenly making a Super Bowl push in 08 that no one told me about?

Briggs - Dont need him. He's a very good player, but we have enough guaranteed money tied up in the LBers already

Berrian - Limited in what he can do and has his worts, but we'd need to pay him like a true #1 WR

Samuel - Best fit of the above, but isnt all he's cracked up to be. The Pats actually wont use him on the strong side as his quality of play drops dramatically there. So why should we play this guy like a top flight cornerback? Not worth it.

Bryant Johnson - Sure. Why not. Doesnt get me excited and I assume he's going to cost more than similar options... but if he'll come cheap, sure.

Javon Walker - Umm... See my comments on Faneca and Bryant Johnson. Also, not a good bet to stay healthy - which I probably should have said about Faneca, too fwiw.

Everything we do needs to be about value right now. Doesnt mean we have to go bargain bin, but there is no pressing need we NEED to go all out for. Play the market as best you can and try to sign guys who drop in value or want to play in South Florida. We dont need to "win" free agency as much as we need to clean up our roster, get some more talent in, and not lock in to any bad contracts.

My vote is...
...Ken Hamlin and Marcus Trufant

by Matty I on Feb 9, 2008 1:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

bryant johnson
i would love to see us get Bryant Johnson, he is the cardinals third WR and is stuck behind 2 of the best WR's in the league.  He is big at 6'3 and 220 and would be great opposite Ginn.  He is a former first round pick but has not put up more than 600 yards in each of his first 4-5 season because he is thier third WR so he would not cost thattt much

i really want this guy

agreed
he'd be a very nice pickup for us

by Matty I on Feb 9, 2008 9:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ya
I like Bryant as he'll give us the fade pattern in the corner of the endzone back.  We need a big guy.  If he's expensive take a pass.  We shouldn't break the bank this year.

Either one of those guys
would be awesome. You cant overpay for Hamlin, but Id overpay Trufant I think, as long as its not too ridiculous. Trufant would fill a lot of our needs in  one fell swoop as well as making the rest of the secondary's job much easier.

Hamlin would do most of the same, but w/out the speed or cover ability. Id like to add that kind of player, but you need Trufant style CBs before you go blowing dough on good tackling, hard hitting safeties.

Also
Haynesworth is someone you go all out for, IMHO. He changes the entire defense. He's relatively young. He's the closest thing there is to a quick fix - and its a legit fix.

by alskor on Feb 11, 2008 1:37 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Franchise
Can't the Titans franchise Haynesworth? If so why on earth wouldn't they? The average salary of the top 5 DTs in the league is going to be way cheaper than what you'd actually pay Haynesworth in FA.

Haynesworth...
The Titans are definitely franchising him.

by TheSeaMammals on Feb 11, 2008 7:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Al
Even if the titans didn't franchise him, do we really want a career underperformer?  He had one good season and everybody wants to pay out the ear for him.  prior to this year he was just a decent DT, when he was drafted to dominate.  Tells me he plays in a contract year only.  I'm not a big fan

by Gliddog on Feb 11, 2008 12:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You cant look at his stats
He is a force that clogs up the middle and makes everyone else's job easier. He really strikes me as a Parcells type of guy. I wouldnt call him a career underachiever by any means. He's a 6'8" tower of a man that makes it impossible to run up the middle. He's the type of NT you game plan around.

In addition, imagine what having that beast up the middle does for Joey Porter and Jason Taylor?? They could wreak havoc all over the field. We could seamlessly switch to a full time 3-4 and I think things would come together very quickly.

Im aware theyre almost certainly going to franchise him, and I would never give up the package to sign him. My hope would be they can work out a trade with the Titans. A whole lot depends on price.

Faneca and Berrian...
get my vote.  They'd go a long way to making a young QB more comfortable.

by urbino on Feb 10, 2008 10:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Where is Marcus Trufant?
Asante Samuel is going to get overpaid by waaaay too much because he played for the Pats who had a lot of teams throwing desperation passes way more often than normal. Unfortunately Trufant is going to get paid too much as well, look at the guy's INT totals: 2 years ago 1 int, 1 year ago 1 int, this year 7 ints. I don't trust players who only play up on a contract year.

by Offer Doll on Feb 11, 2008 5:06 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

My bad...
for not adding Trufant.  My take was that Seattle was resigning him, so I decided not to add him.  Trufant would be pricey, but would be a major upgrade in out secondary and I would rather have him instead of Samuel.

Its going to be an interesting off season.  I am in favor of not going after big name free agents and just focus on the draft.  But the draft is never a given and the Dolphins have plenty of cap room to sign a big time free agent.  Faneca, Berrian, and Trufant would be my top 3 big signing choices if the Dolphins were to do such a thing.  Bryant Johnson would definitely be a nice cheap signing to attempt to fill a hole.
