REPORT: Keyshawn Johnson coming to Miami??

CBS4 is reporting that Bill Parcells has reached out to Keyshawn Johnson about potentially joining the Miami Dolphins:

Dolphins Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells is telling Keyshawn Johnson that if he un-retires he can have a job in Miami.  Sources are telling CBS4 Sports that Parcells is reaching out to his former receiver in New York and Dallas about possibly joining the Dolphins.

Alright.  What isn't discussed here is if Keyshawn would be coming to the Dolphins as a player or as an assistant on Tony Sparano's staff.  My guess would be as a player, but I won't make any assumptions.

If it is as a player, then this is certainly a HUGE deal.  Johnson hasn't played since 2006, when he caught 70 passes for 815 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Recently, it was reported by Chris Mortensen that the Panthers reached out to Keyshawn in the middle of 2007 after losing Maurice Stovall.  Johnson responded to that report that by saying he enjoys his ESPN job but "is listening" to offers to come out of retirement.

Now, he'll be 36 in July, but is certainly a guy who I wouldn't mind seeing get a shot with this group in Miami come training camp.  And with the respect Keyshawn has for Parcells, I wouldn't be shocked if this rumor did come to fruition.

Hat tip to John for e-mailing this story to me.

omg omg omg
I think he is a much better pick up then Chad Johnson. Don't get me wrong, right now, Chad is prob much better. However, Keyshawn is a great 3rd down receiver and has the ability to be a deep threat. And of course, he won't cost us draft picks like Chad would.
Let this season BE GINN!

ugh!
this is a bad sign! It looks like yet another administration is taking a 'win now' approach over developing young talent to win for the future. I'll give them a little rope on this one, but the second I see Gus Ferotte on the roster...

OTOH
Gus probably played better than any QB we've had since Marino retired.

ouch!!
but you have some merit in saying that...
I might go with D huard on that topic...

but my point, as i'm sure you understand, is bringing in guys who have 1 or 2 years left in the tank is not going to get the dolphins out of the morass that they are currently stuck in. I'm sure if you bring in enough vets, as saban did, you can create the illusion of progress and get the team to a so-so six to nine wins type of team, but for how long can they sustain that...
recent history tells us not very long. This organization needs youth and it needs a lot of it.
and they need to play that youth once they get it. drafting guys to 'learn' how to play, watching from the sideline, washed up vets go 1-15 won't do it.

WOW
Can he be effective as a player?

I remember another receiver about his age the team reached out to - Chris Carter - and he ended up with a lacerated organ of some sort (Kidney?). Not good.

I hear from the media, that Keyshawn looks marvelous -- in great shape, to make it into football camp. Another veteran though, and I wonder how much he'll cost.

It's just barely February and it's getting interesting by the day........

Eh
Sign him for the min.. Not a bad possession receiever. Could actually teach our younger receivers a thing or 3 also.

I totally agree...
The Dolphins should sign him to teach our younger receivers.  Its a low risk sign.

I'll pass
He's way too old, I wouldnt mind him acting as a mentor to the younger WRs, but he's done as far as palying goes

This is a low-risk move...
as Keyshawn would cost us nothing in picks and certainly not be disruptive.

The catch is, Keyshawn would have maybe, if even, what, a year? two max? the dolphins won't be contending in that time frame so they best have some talent developing to take over whatever spot they would hypothetically give keyshawn.

except
for the fact that he would eat up roster space and play time that could go to developing a young
player with future potential that he certainly doesnt bring to the table.

Just say "no".
there is a reason no one picked the guy is out of football.  He had the dropsies the last couple of years that he played.

Injuries...
Lets keep in mind with Zach and Channing missing time this year, it also put extra emphasis on Porter.  With ZT and CC and JP all playing at the same time and - hopefully - on the same page, I think you would have seen a better JP...

No excuses, just something to keep in mind though.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

help the QB
Don't forget we have a QB that needs some help. I would rather wait a year than to give a 3 WR a starting role. Does Beck need all young blood adjusting to the game at WR? I don't think so. Let a possession vet line up opposite Ginn, to get those tough yards and move the chains. Then light it up with ginn at the right time. He is a tuna guy and help the young guys learn.

Wait..
LBooker was doing that last year, he was getting those tough yards. Lets develop the young guns that we have in the roster
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(20 years and counting)
