Dolphins sign Josh McCown

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Dolphins have signed QB Josh McCown to a 2 year deal, according to ProFootballTalk:

Per Schefter, the contract is a two-year deal worth $6.25 million. Although that's a contract more in line with what a backup usually makes, McCown may very well be the Dolphins' starter in September. Of the three quarterbacks on the Dolphins' 2007 roster, two -- Trent Green and Cleo Lemon -- are already gone, and the third -- John Beck -- was unimpressive in the four games he started.

McCown started nine games for the Raiders last year, completing 58.4 percent of his passes and throwing 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He previously started 22 games for the Cardinals from 2003 to 2005, and he spent the 2006 season with the Lions, where his only regular-season playing time came at wide receiver.

So there's our veteran QB.  Eh.

What do you all think?

McCown
At least McCown shows flashes of ability, Beck didn't show anything.

Just another Back-up (2nd Stringer)
Nothing to get excited about....I feel there is more to our QB search....If Beck doesn't work out I wouldn't want to think McCown is our man...I like all the other signings though!

He is insurance
Pray our starter is injury free. Hey, Who wants Lemon-Aid back? Josh might be o.k. we will just have to see. Common he played at Oakland last year.. OAKLAND! He was picked by the tuna lets give it a chance.

Shows you how weak the QB class is if...
McCown may be our starter in Sept.....maybe he will prove me wrong.

Agreed
Beck has tools and accuracy and I think that those 4 starts last year only made him hungy for more to prove his worth. Being behind in points during most games and throwing outs to RB's didnt build his confidence much but he seems to be the kinda guy who just brushes that bad stuff off. He will shine.

Matt I I think are Right!
I hope John Beck comes out with a chip on his shoulders & kicks some ass...we need a QB like that!

Exactly...
Was the point I was going to make.

Given the available FA's out there right now, not much to really sneeze about.  Volek probably was the only other one worth looking at - unless we wanted to go back to the Daunte days...

At least you know what you are getting with him.  Nothing outstanding, but someone who is "serviceable"...

Again though, given the FA pool - about the best you can hope for.

Updated roster????
LOL..  Anyone have an updated roster???

WOW.  Talk about revamping the team!   Act fast though and don't wait - the best thing about this regime is it appears they know what and who they wanted, and they have gone after them and signed them in a hurry so as not to get in a bidding war or give other teams an opportunity to steal someone from under their noses.

Not bad
for one day's work.  I think Beck will steal our hearts.  He's a hard worker.  He had no line.  Toward the end of the season, the line was not taking care of our QB, no matter who it was.  He told Jason Taylor he's going to work hard over the winter - I believe him.  We need another rookie - 2nd rounder maybe?

I see this as
A guy who will hold the fort until Beck is ready or they feel beck will never be ready and we have to find a starter. Hence the 2yr contract. I like it, coach him up and give him some big targets he might be able to score enough points to win some games. Our defense is going to be tough hopefully they can score some and the offense can put up 13-17 points. We can win some games.

Meh
He'll be a decent back-up.

by Patssuck456 on Feb 29, 2008 5:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think it is a solid signing....
McCown is plenty capable of being a decent starter, if needed. Plus he brings experience (46 games started) and competition for our young(er) QB(s).

He also was ahead of Culpepper in the depth chart last year so at least of recent, he's better than Pep.

Really, what more can you want in a backup? If the guy was that much better, he'd be starting wouldn't he?

by Natalya on Feb 29, 2008 5:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

really?
I wanted McCown?  I NEVER said that.  Get your facts straight.  But, yes, he's better than Cleo Lemon.  That's damn sure!

got it now!
but that one seems like kind of a reach, doesn't it?

or should I say: BTOSLKOARDI

Complaining about McCown
If you complain about McCown, let's look at our starting QB's of last year's career stats :

Lemon
CMP ATT YDS  CMP% YPA  LNG TD INT SACK RAT
211 377 2185 56.0 5.80 64  8  7   30      72.2

McCown
CMP ATT  YDS  CMP% YPA  LNG TD INT SACK RAT
609 1052 6582 57.9 6.26 60  35 40  93   71.6

Yes, he has more interceptions then TD's, but look who he was playing with the Raiders.  Also he is only really a backup to give Beck some competition.  He comes cheap and we will probably draft a QB in the draft.

Just my take.

Just a sec peeps
He is not called in to be the starter, we all know every team needs a veteran QB, thats what he is. Nothing more, nothing less.
"It all starts with the Dolphins," an executive with another team said Sunday, "and not a single person here has any idea what they're going to do."
