Okay, Enough already with the "Vaunted Ravens D"
I see one of our fans quoting the Football Outsiders' DVOA ratings to show that the Ravens have improved more than the Fins, or at least that they have a better D, and even terms them a "takeaway machine". I want to say that I am NOT here to bash him, or anyone else (although there is an annoying Ravens fan that I would love to slap around a bit).
First, I like Football Outsiders' DVOA ratings, but they are generally good for... well, generalizing.
While many people like to look at the stats that say the Ravens have the 2nd best D in the NFL and call that "reality", I call it misleading. Looking at total yards allowed by a team is certainly one way to measure and rank an NFL defense. But if you constantly give your opponent a short field and turnovers, they might not end the game with many yards but still have a ton of points. By the "Yds Allowed" standard, your D looks pretty good, but you don't win many games.
So let's take a look at some stats that are more directly relevant to winning and losing games.
First, let's talk about the Ravens "takeaway machine". Well the facts are:
Takeaways
Ravens - Ints 26, FF 13, Total 39
Dolphins - Ints 18, FF 17, Total 35
Hmmm, Ravens have 4 more over the season. Doesn't really have me shaking in my boots.
Okay, how about Sacks by the D? This is certainly indicative of pressure on the QB, right?
Sacks
Dolphins - 41
Ravens - 35
Hmmm.... Dolphins by 6
Okay, let's use a real telling stat; one that absolutely effects the outcome of the game:
Points Allowed per game:
Baltimore - 15.2 Ranked 3rd in the NFL
Miami - 19.8 Ranked 9th in the NFL
So the Miami D allows 4.6 more points per game. Baltimore has the edge, but not exactly a blowout there either.
How about Total TDs allowed per team this season?
TDs Allowed - Off, Def, and STs:
Baltimore - 26 Ranked 3rd in the NFL
Miami - 33 Ranked 7th in the NFL
You know, you can talk about Yds. Allowed all day long, but the real indicator of performance is points. And from what I can see here, these teams look pretty competitive. While there is a lot of talk about the "great" Baltimore Defense, the Dolphins are pretty close in this season's performance.
I could point out that our Secondary is playing much better today than they were 8 weeks ago, but let's just leave the Defense discussion where it is for now.
Instead, let's talk about Offense.
Offensive TDs scored this season:
Ravens - Rush 20, Rec 16, Total 36
Fins - Rush 18, Rec 20, Total 38
Close. Fins score more. Ravens rely more heavily on the running game.
How about a QB comparison?:
QB Stats through Week 17
ATT CMP YDS TD INT %
Chad Pennington - 476 321 3653 19 7 97.4
Joe Flacco -------- 428 257 2971 14 12 80.3
Pass Yds/G:
Chad - 228
Joe - 185
Sacks Taken:
Chad - 24
Joe - 32
Oh and did i mention Flacco has 11 fumbles this year? Chad has 3.
I dunno. It looks to me like Chad is the better QB. But those are from the entire season. Not much good for trending. Let's look at how each guy has played down the stretch:
Last 4 games:
Att Comp Pct Yds Avg Lng TD Int Sck SckY Rate
Chad: 112 83 74.1 772 6.9 61 8 1 3 14 112.6
Joe: 97 55 56.7 695 7.2 48 2 3 9 68 73.2
Chad is clearly playing much better right now!
But here is the clincher. Which guy can take over the game and lead his team to a win?
Which guy is cool under pressure? Which guy will make mistakes when the game is on the line? Which QB has shown the ability to lead his team to a comeback?
Here is the QB comparison of each when playing from behind:
Att Comp % Yds TDs Int Scks Rating
Chad: 191 129 67.5 1,608 10 4 11 102.2
Joe: 126 86 68.3 875 2 7 14 70.0
Doesn't look like Flacco is up to that task yet. To be fair, he IS a rookie, and you wouldn't expect that from him. But still, you have to ask yourself, "Who would you want at QB for this big game?" Personally, I would take CP every time.
What these stats show is that Baltimore needs to be able to run the ball to win. If they can't run, and are forced to rely on Flacco to win the game, they have trouble.
But my point here is NOT to say the Fins are better than the Ravens. It is to point out to all of the "know nothings", who talk trash about how the Ravens will "swoop" into Dolphins Stadium and beat the Fins like it is little more than a BYE week, you all are in for a rude awakening.
These Miami Dolphins might be light on PR and media love, but they are heavy on results. I expect a good game, but I fully expect that the Fins run D will show up for this game, as opposed to what happened the first time around, and this will boil down to the team that can play smarter on Offense. IF it plays out like this, all you Dolphins Doubters, I think you all know who wins THAT matchup.

Great stuff Lefty
Chad will be smart, the defense will rattle Flaco into some stupid decisions, and once again Chad yells for the Victory Formation to end this game
"We pride ourselves on playing smart, tough, disiplined football" Chad Pennington 12/28/08
i'm tellin ya man...
the ONLY key to this game is stopping their rushing attack. If we can stop their run game, we win, end of story. I have total confidence in our offense, which is something I have not said in years… decades even!

From the numbers
looks like we should squeak out with a win…the ravens will most likely fall behind at some point in the game and when they do they will be screwed, Flacco cannot handle the pressure and the more they fall behind the less they can run the ball, which is their lifeline…furthermore, Flacco will be shitting bricks and will make a ton of mistakes that our D will surely take advantage of….Chad will be cool, calm and collected and will be smart against this defense and like against every other team he played this season he wont make mistakes against this D…..Dolphins win, end of story

Perfect
Great stuff Lefty, it really shows how even these teams are. And I think, when two teams are evenly matched, it comes down to coaching and discipline. I take Sparano over Harbaugh, and I take Henning over Cameron. Sparano has shown the ability to rally his team and have them focused and playing hard in every game this season. He’s been able to gameplan effectively and make the proper in-game adjustments to give his team a chance. And every guy that is plugged into the game knows his job and is able to execute it.
Henning has thrown out all the unwritten NFL rules about what does and doesn’t work against pro defenses, and has really opened up the offense creatively. He’s been able to design plays to maximize Pennington’s effectiveness and minimize the opportunities for mistakes. He’s kept both our running backs fresh and healthy, and used a variety of WR’s and TE’s so defenses can’t key on one guy to stop.
The main difference between the two teams is this: Miami can gameplan to take away the run, and if they execute, they win. Baltimore can’t gameplan for anything specifically, because Miami has been able to win running the ball, passing, kicking FG’s, Wildcatting teams, and every other way you could imagine. We’re not a one-trick pony, and that creates problems for any defense. If we stop the run, Henning will find ways to score points, and Pennington will not turn it over or make bad decisions that cost you points.
I see a win in the cards, because we have a better TEAM, in the total sense of the word, than Baltimore.

This is well said!
We really ARE a complete team now. It was a lot of tweaking and tuning to get all the parts running smoothly, but we finally have STs working well, the O-line doing great, and the secondary playing like their hair is on fire.
The Offense hasn’t been the problem, and the D-line was only an issue when Ferg was out.
Firing on all cylinders boys! What a way to roll into the playoffs!

well we all need to consider one thing though..
..you cant really be comparing season statistics for QB because joe flacco is a rookie and pennington is a veteran. flacco does have decent numbers for a rookie. either way, dolphins are still winning. =D
Well what else would you compare?
It doesn’t matter whether he’s a rookie or not, his stats tell the story of his play this season. We’re not talking about playing him 3 years down the road, we play him Sunday, while he’s still a rookie. You’re right that he has decent numbers for a rookie, but he’s not gonna get a free pass from the defense because he’s just a rookie.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"

Compare all you want
Both teams are 11-5 and the only difference is that the Ravens already beat the Dolphins and certainly that gives them the confidence that they can do it again. We’ll just have to agree to disagree, but we will see come Sunday!
Rexx
There you are.
so rexy boy, we can sure disagree, but I seriously don’t think confidence is an issue for the Dolphins.
While you are talking about your great defense, the Dolphins have set so many team first this year that I have lost track. They have been known for years to swoon in December, not play well in cold weather, and not win in the Meadowlands. Well, guess what? The are perfect in December and just played, AND WON, the coldest game in their history. Then turned around and went into Jersey and beat the sinkin Jets AT HOME, in a big game.
No, I don’t think the Fins confidence right now will be a problem, so I don’t see that your boys confidence is an edge.

They are both the starters, and both are the guys throwing the passes and avoiding the blitzes. Both starting in new systems, and the fact that Pennington is more experienced is reflected in the numbers. So the comparison of performance, and fact that CP can win ball games is the point.

Hello
So the Miami D allows 4.6 more points per game. Baltimore has the edge, but not exactly a blowout there either.
That’s a bit of an understatement. There is a 4.6 point difference between the 3rd ranked Ravens and 9th the ranked Dolphins. There is also a 4.6 point different between the 9th ranked Dolphins and the 25th ranked Oakland Raiders.
You know, you can talk about Yds. Allowed all day long, but the real indicator of performance is points. And from what I can see here, these teams look pretty competitive. While there is a lot of talk about the “great” Baltimore Defense, the Dolphins are pretty close in this season’s performance.
I’m sorry, but 4.6 points is significant. Your argument just proves that there are a few elite defenses that sit atop the league, and the rest of the teams are bunched together.
Okay, how about Sacks by the D? This is certainly indicative of pressure on the QB,
right?
Hmmm…. Dolphins by 6
I beg to differ. Just because the Ravens do not have one guy with 18 sacks does not mean that they don’t get pressure on a quarterback. Irrespective of whether you consider our defenses somewhat close, Baltimore’s D is still top 3 in the league, and they can get by easily without the sacks.
We get tremendous penetration, but don’t get sacks. That’s fine. It’s possible. I’m not going to go into our schedule and point out that we’ve faced numerous extremely mobile/elusive quarterbacks, but I just vehemently disagree with the premise that sacks = pressure = success.
Close. Fins score more. Ravens rely more heavily on the running game.
So you’re trying to flaunt the fact that Pennington is so much better than the rookie Flacco, yet you openly acknowledge that the two teams are essentially equal when it comes to overall scoring.
I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather depend on my running game than my quarterback in the playoffs. A QB can have an off day and really stink things up, but three proven running backs are not all going to collectively shit a brick.
But still, you have to ask yourself, “Who would you want at QB for this big game?” Personally, I would take CP every time.
I’d take Pennington as well, but I’d also choose our running backs, our offensive line, our wide receivers, and our entire defensive unit. It’s an overused, annoying cliche, but a team that possesses a strong running game and a superior defense is built for the post season. Peyton only won his ring after he had two threats in the backfield and a red hot defense.
Chad is clearly playing much better right now!
Arbitrary. Although Pennington is putting up better numbers, Flacco has done what he has needed to do in order to beat the Redskins, Cowboys, and Jaguars, with a narrow loss against Pittsburgh. Because we have a good ground attack, Flacco hasn’t needed to average nearly 30 passes a game like Pennington.
Although I agree Chad has been hotter than Joe down the stretch, the word “clearly” is just untrue.

Please don’t judge our entire fanbase based on what one poster thinks/says.
I’m not a big believer in statistics as they pertain to football. This game is a complete team sport, and numbers cannot be used to judge players in the NFL like they can be in the MLB, and to a lesser extent, the NBA. To me, stats in football are only nice as an aside and cannot be used to draw conclusions like
From the numbers, looks like we should squeak out with a win
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

+1 for the effort
I don’t post on Baltimore Beatdown, and I rarely, if ever, agree with Rexx because he is overly confrontational and doesn’t even try to be objective.
Hostile Environment? I thought Miami had to blackout Dolphins games… Furthermore, I have friends in Boca who went to the game and told me that Ravens fans were much more vocal than the local 305ers.
A rookie quarterback? We’ve had to hear that all season long, and he has shown up against defenses much better than Miami’s.
Overconfidence? The Ravens run on emotion, and in the playoffs, that’s a good thing.
I don’t want to derail my original post, though.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Dolphins games haven't been blacked out for YEARS
nice try though. Your raven fan buddies may think the Ravens fans were louder, but the stadium won’t be 50/50 like it’s been in past seasons. Dolphins fans are paying to see this team, and they’re loud as hell. Don’t go by what your friends tell you, because they’re wrong.
We’ve heard all season long how we should keep losing, so it doesn’t matter. Bottom line, your QB is a rookie. And if we stop the run and force him to make big plays in a loud stadium in the biggest game of his life, he’ll make mistakes. You can’t assume your rookie QB won’t have jitters just because he’s your rookie QB. It happens to EVERY rookie QB, which is why the running game will be so important. And I have confidence that we can stop your running game with the way our defense has been playing and with Ferguson healthy and clogging the middle.
It’s gonna be an emotional game, no doubt. Between Ray Lewis and Joey Porter you have two the best emotional leaders in the game. But it’s all about who can control and channel those emotions. And nobody is better at channeling his emotions and staying cool than Pennington this season. It’s not going to be an easy game, and I wouldn’t just expect a victory if I were you.

I’m pretty sure that can be said about any team in the league. You’re basically saying that if you shut down our strong point, we’ll have trouble winning the game. Isn’t that a given…?
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Not exactly
because I’m saying your offense is a bit one-dimensional. With Miami, what part of the offense do you take away? Stop the run, and Pennington is capable of beating you. Sit back on the pass, and we have the ability to run it down your throat. Blitz relentlessly, and Chad P is smart enough to use his check-downs and hot reads and pick it apart. There isn’t one player or particular aspect of our offense that you can focus on and stop. I’m not saying we’re explosively scoring 35 every game, but we are able to move the ball in many different ways, no matter the circumstances. I think that Baltimore is significantly worse on offense when their running game isn’t working, because the passing game seems more like a complement to McGahee, Rice and McClain than a partner.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"

I'm trying to be fair here
But if we shut Pennington down, your backs would not be able to run the ball down our throats.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
I have to agree with Nicky here
The Dolphins are more balanced on offense. i think you pick your poison much more so that if we shut down your running game and force Flacco to make plays.
If your D focuses on the pass, it WILL open up the run for us. We have three pretty good backs too you know.
-LCFF
by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 31, 2008 2:16 AM EST up reply actions
Well that depends how you shut Pennington down
if you need 6 DB’s, we WILL run it down your throat. If you do it with 4, then obviously we won’t be pounding out 7-10 a carry. But if you don’t actively try to stop our running game, it will pick up yards and first downs. Please don’t think your defense is gonna stop our running game with 5 or 6 guys in the box. And don’t expect to shut down Pennington without putting extra guys in the secondary.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"
by Little Nicky 21 on Dec 31, 2008 2:17 AM EST up reply actions
I believe
We haven’t surrendered 100 yards to one guy in something like 40 games. Additionally, our guys are giving up 80 yards per game, while Miami only gets 118 YPG.
Although I can definitely see Chad getting some big yards on our depleted secondary, we’ll be able to put 6/7 in the box and effectively stop your backs. Our run defense is a constant and simply is not vulnerable. Baltimore can most certainly lose games, but a team will not sustain a drive by sticking to the run.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
First, we don't run a Cam style offense
meaning, we won’t stick to something that is not working. We can pass and run, and that is an advantage to keep teams off balance.
Second, any defense is vulnerable to the right attack. Baltimore is susceptible to over-pursuing side to side, but they are smart too and it’s not easy to catch them. Henning is very good at “setting up defenses” and I will catch you a few times going the wrong way.
-LCFF
by LeftCoastFinFan on Dec 31, 2008 2:32 AM EST up reply actions
The one guy argument is a moot point
because we use 4. If you put 6-7 in the box, that leaves 5 or less in the secondary, which opens up passing lanes. We have TE’s who can go down the middle and make the tough catch, and we have WR’s that thrive on short yardage throws, particularly Bess, who is as quick as they come in and out of his breaks. We may not need to sustain a drive solely by running the ball, but picking up good yardage and keeping us in manageable 2nd and 3rd down situations will allow Pennington to move the chains doing what he does best.
"Are we doing this? Is this happening?"
by Little Nicky 21 on Dec 31, 2008 2:32 AM EST up reply actions
I'm agreeing with you
You’ll be able to get yards through the air. It’s hard for a fan outside of Baltimore to understand, but our defense will stop the run at all costs, meaning that they’ll willingly give up big plays by the quarterback as long as their pride remains intact and the run is stopped.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
first of all
finsx WTF?? lol
secondly, Baltimo, I have to think that if Pennington is kniving the secondary up the coaches will adjust. You don’t win 11 games without being able to adjust. So I think we’re in agreement that passing will key a Miami victory, but I believe we will still be able to run once we back the defense off.

They probably prerecorded shows in that era, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the Weaver segment ran live. Earl was one of the greatest managers ever, but he sure was a loose cannon.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
what a nut
that’s funny though..

Now don't rationalize, you started off good.
I can go along with the 4.6 argument you began with, but then you go to this"
I beg to differ.
There are no facts here, just opinion. Fine, disagree, but sack ARE in fact indicative of QB pressure, whether they come from one guy or not. I did NOT however say they are the ONLY measure of QB pressure.
As for the QB scoring, I agree with you that I would prefer to score by running the ball, BUT I want to know that my QB can score in the passing game when needed. My point is that the Dolphins are balance, and Pennington not only has better numbers, but the numbers bear out MUCH better ball security and fewer mistakes (see fumbles and INTs).
I will give you that saying Chad is “clearly” playing better is not taking into account any intangibles in Flacco’s game. If he had did what he needed to do to beat those teams when it mattered, kudos to him. I did not watch the games, so it isn’t fair to state that as a fact. However, according to the QB stats for the last four games, Chad is playing much better than Joe over the past four games.
I actually completely agree with you about not being a big believer in stats as they pertain to the game. This post actually was started in response to a Dolphin fan discussing stats showing how good the Ravens D is, and I was really intending to show the fact that stats aren’t absolute. I think both teams are close, and I think that both teams are capable of pulling out a win. I believe home field will be an edge for the Fins this time, because their last home game was insanely loud. I also respect the B-More D, but I think the Fins D are playing three times better than they did at the beginning of the season, and no one is paying attention. Certainly the stats don’t show it unless you start to compile them over the last 6 games or so.
But, at the end of the day, I still say, as I have said all along, that if the Fins can shut down your run game, they win. End of story. I don’t think Flacco can take the game on his shoulders and beat us through the air.
But we shall see.

couple of points lefty
first off let me agree with the b-necks 4.6 points per game IS a signicant difference… i guess think of it in terms of point spread… 4.6 covers a heck of a lot of games…
I’d even concede that baltimores defense is better than the dolphins, they certainly have a heck of a lot of individual talent on that side of the ball, but that said miami’s defense is more about team defense as a unit and a high degree of specializations… there is a lot of rotation and match up changes where as the b-necks stick to their base guys… so i’m going to agree with you that defense is the core of both of these teams and that the difference will end up being offensive execution… i.e. the team that executes their offense better will win….
now to your points on offense… i’d have to say that some of the stats are meaningless… in particular the last 4 games ones… it’s pretty clear that miami has played on of the weakest SoS in the league and baltimores was a wee bit harder (nfc east vs west & afc south vs. afc west) – so flacco’s stats are kind of skewed having played against pitt twice, the titans, washington, philly, & the giants…
all of that said, and this may come as a surprise to some, pennington is the better QB on THIS sunday. Rookie QB’s making their first playoff start are not a reliable element that teams can count on. yes flacco may rise to the occasion but being able to handle the demands of the post season (extra distractions and excitement) while doing your prep work likely give the more experience QB the huge edge….
so this game will likely come down to the factor of "can miami stop the run and force flacco to beat them, something that would be a highly unlikely varriable considering the situation….
oh man
you almost had it there…
Tell me why it’s “highly unlikely” that we can stop their running game enough to force Flacco into making plays? That’s been our MO all season long, and it’s got us an 11-5 record. Stop talking about the schedule already, we get it, we played some crappy teams, it’s over, stop. Tell me WHY you don’t think the Dolphins can contain the Ravens running game, considering we’ve been able to contain running backs, for the most part, all season long.

no, i think he meant
highly unlikely that Flacco (a rookie QB in his 1st playoff game) will be able to beat us if we stop the run.

The Planet Committee
not sure of the full name, meets every year and decides on planet shit. They decided last year I think that Pluto doesn’t fit the new definition of a planet, so they reclassified it. It’s not a Sun-orbiting Asteroid or something like that. I guess it doesn’t have the proper orbit or size or something… Kinda screws up the whole Planet Rhyme we all learned in grade school though..

So the Miami D allows 4.6 more points per game. Baltimore has the edge, but not exactly a blowout there either
The funny thing is that that’s like saying the difference between a 3.00 ERA in baseball isn’t exactly a ton better than a 5.00 ERA based on the fact that it’s simply 2 runs per game. It’s all relative. The truth is that a 3.00 ERA is A LOT better than a 5.00 ERA.
When you compare the points allowed per game to THE BEST DEFENSES in the league, PIT, TEN, NYG, the Ravens are closer to them in points allowed per game than the Dolphins are to the Ravens.
PIT-13.9
TEN-14.6
BAL-15.2
MIA-19.8
The fact is, on the surface 4.6 pts. per game may not look like a lot (just like 2 runs per game doesn’t), but when you factor in how difficult it is to score points in the NFL (just like how difficult it is to score runs in MLB), 4.6 pts IS a lot. Not to mention that 4.6 pt. difference would require a TD to overcome it, not just a FG. Factor in the offensive scoring, BAL-24.1 pts/game to MIA-21.6 pts/game (difference of 2.5pts/game), the total points differential becomes more than a TD and that is huge.
Also, as I blogged over at baltimorebeatdown, I broke down the schedules and how much each of these teams won by or lost by and the bottom line is the Ravens played a tougher schedule (as is witnessed in their opponent overall records, and the records of the teams they beat and lost to compared to who the Dolphins beat and lost to), won by more points/win, and lost by less points/loss. What that showed me was that the Ravens wins came against tougher teams than the Dolphins wins and they won by more points than the Dolphins did and the Ravens losses came against tougher teams than the Dolphins losses and they lost by less points than the Dolphins lost by.
One more thing; Have the Dolphins played the Steelers Twice, Titans, Giants, Colts, Cowboys, and Eagles or anyone comparable to those teams… and before you tell me “no, but they played the 11-5 Patriots twice,” go take a look at who the Pats played this year.
Kevbo: [to George Sherrill] George, you look a lot like Vin Diesel...
Flatbill: Let's get somethin' straight... Vin Diesel looks like me.
-From "The Making of Orioles Magic"
already debated these points... see other posts in the thread.
only thing i will say here is, you might want to look at the QBs. Takeaway D and ST TDs, and the Miami Offense has scored more TDs than the Ravens, and they have been pretty balanced as to how they do it.
You need to hope that Miami doesn’t stop your running game. That will be the difference in this game.

Stats joke
Did you hear about the 5 foot tall statistician who calculated the average depth of a lake to be 4 feet, so he decided to walk across it and drowned.
Stats can be made to say a lot of things that people want them to say. This game is going to be about coaching and heart. You gotta have big ones. I believe.
BTW: Lefty
This is the best analysis I’ve seen for this game.
Then again you’re only competing with the idiots at ESPN and NFL.com.
