Perspective II - Observed Fires
Last week I wrote a long article on the need for us as fans to keep our perspective about where this team is headed. There were many, many of us getting swept up into a 4-game win streak and being one game out of first place, and losing focus on the 1-15 season we had last year. Suddenly, New England, the defending AFC Champion, came into Miami and beats us, and everyone started bashing the team. It was ridiculous, and I wanted to remind everyone that, while I want us to win the AFC East as much as everyone else, if we don’t, the 6 wins at that point (7 now!), were only 600% better than last year. I’ll take that any day.
Well, this week I would like to again write. This time, I would like to give you my perspective on some of the things I have heard or read recently. I want to stress that everything in here is my opinion. At no point am I trying to tell you that you are wrong. I just want to let you know how I feel.
By the way...this is LONG! Sorry...

This team is good. We aren’t great. I don’t know how may times I have said or written that, but I still think it’s true. If we were great, we wouldn’t struggle against the Seahawks, the Raiders, or the Rams. But, a good team, struggling or not, still finds a way to win. That’s what we do. Last year, we found ways to lose. This year, it’s the exact opposite. Give us a couple more years. We won’t find ways to win. We will just win.
I think the first thing that the coaching staff needs to look at as the game plan these next four games is our running game. The Offensive line is still finding ways to get us holes. They may not be there every down, but they are there enough to break out a back. But, when you have the R&R Express sitting in your backfield, not to mention the do-everything Patrick Cobbs, you have to feed THEM the ball. Yes, them. You cannot expect the running game to dominate if you only feed one of our beasts. We need to be running the ball nearly 40 times a game…minimum. If you get Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown 20 carries a piece, you will dominate that game. Period. There’s no doubt in my mind.
Look at it this way. Ricky Williams has run the ball 120 times for 512 yards and 3 touchdowns. That works out to 4.3 yards per carry. Ronnie Brown is at 169 attempts for 690 yards and 10 TDs, for a 4.1 yards per carry average. Now, I know more carries will change the averages, but let’s just use them where they are. If you can get Ronnie 20 carries a game over the last four games, you give him an additional 328 yards, for a total of 1018 yards. Doing the same to Ricky would give him 856 yards total, or 344 yards in those 4 games. That would give us a 1,000 yard rusher, and one 150 yards away from 1,000. Plus, the running game would then allow us to control the clock, keep the other offense of the field, and keep the defense fresh. I like the sound of that.
Further developing it, CP10 would see a decrease in his attempts per game. There is a flaw in this analysis, in that I am ignoring any rushing attempts by players other than the R&R Express. I will assume that those players will continue to receive the same number of attempts and only compare CP10’s passing attempts to the R&R Express’ running. So, currently, Ronnie Brown is getting 14 attempts per game with Ricky rushing 10 times per game. If you up that to 20 each, that 16 pass attempts per game that CP10 will not make. Right now, we are averaging 30.3 passes per game by CP10, with 19.8 completions for 240.1 yards per game or 7.9 yards per attempt (2881 total yards and a 65.4% completion rate).
Now, take the 16 attempts away from CP10, and you get 14 attempts per game, with nine completions. Nine completions at 19.8 yard per completion is 178.2 yards per game. Over 4 games, that’s 712.8 yards, or a total of 3593 yards for the season. With our limited wide receivers (especially with Rillo out), I think limiting the passing attempts is a sensible idea. Plus, if we dominate the run, the play action pass becomes more viable, and therefore, the Ginnja would be able to get open on go routes down the sideline, resulting in a higher yards per game average on the same number of attempts.
Just something to think about. It make sense to me.
Okay, other random things.
Nicky, is there room on the Brandwagon? How fast are the seats filling? I’m not quite ready to jump onto it, but I am in line to buy a ticket.
Why are people anointing Matt Ryan as the NFL MVP? I keep hearing more and more commentators giving him the award. I know he turned a bad franchise around and has surprised everyone. I am pretty sure, there’s another QB doing the same thing south of Atlanta. If that’s the criteria for MVP, why not CP10? Even if we compare stats, CP10’s 238-364 (65.4%) for 2881 yards (240.1 per game) is better than Ryan’s 203-333 (61.0%) for 2625 yards (218.8 per game). Apparently, the MVP contests is decided on three factors, first, you have to turn around a bad team. I think CP10 should have an edge here, since we were 1-15 last year and all. Second, you must be a rookie. Sorry CP10, you’re out. And third, you must replace the dog fighting Michael Vick. That’s the main thing the talking heads of NFL coverage keep bringing up. How much they suffered because of Michael Vick. I didn’t know that Michael Vick’s career played such a large part in MVP consideration.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think CP10 is MVP of the league. I just think it’s ridiculous to give it to Ryan.
I find myself wondering a lot these days, and I am serious about this, what is an "ugly" win? I’ve seen ugly games. I’ve seen ugly losses. What’s an ugly win? Are there beautiful losses? I don’t think so. I really don’t think there are "ugly" wins. It’s a win…right?!?
Our defense needs help. We used to stop the run and lose because of the pass. Now, we are shutting down the pass much better, and letting teams run all over us. I don’t know what the solution is, but we need to fix it. If we are going to get burned, let’s get burned badly. Let’s blitz. Let’s cut Joey Porter loose. Porter should be finding things on the opposing QB’s body that the QB’s wife and girlfriend don’t know about. They should be picking out drapery together because Porter is living with that QB for the weekend. Again, I don’t know how we fix this, but something has to be done.
You know, I have heard the argument over whether you can be a fan of two teams. I think you can. But, I think you have to have one that is YOUR TEAM, and one that you kind of like and would like to see do well…AS LONG AS IT DOESN’T HURT YOUR TEAM. In that sense, I think your "second" team cannot be in the same conference as YOUR team. It can’t work. But, Titansfighter, this is not an attack on you. Just an observation. And, at least you are coming to the light side.
Do you realize 10 road teams won last week? How on Earth does that happen? I lost my picks pool BADLY this week.
Am I copying RZ with an article like this?
Why do we overpower every other team’s blog? So far, from what I have seen, if another site’s post has 10-12 comments, it’s a great post. All of our posts have 10-12 comments. We are so involved on our website, so when we move to another team’s site, it’s like the Colts sneaking out of Baltimore. The moving truck backs up, and opens its doors. But, rather than packing up the football offices, we all pour out and run the place for 5 days. It’s crazy.
I don’t think the Bills fans like being called Toronto.
Why don’t you ever hear jokes about Dolphin-safe Tuna? Is it just me, but doesn’t Parcells’ presence scream Dolphin-safe Tuna?
I know we own the tie breakers and can win the AFC East if we win out. That’s great. You know what I am looking at right now? We have seven wins. That’s right…7! With 7 wins we are one win away from a non-losing season. 1 win! That’s it, all we need. 1 win and we aren’t a losing team. What more can you want after 1-15?
Speaking of losing, do any of you feel bad for the Lions? I mean, I know they are perennial losers and that they don’t seem to ever get better. I know their going 0-16 would make people forget about 1-15, but still. No team deserves to go through what we did. I’m just saying, a little sympathy might not be bad.
A lot of people, especially from other teams but including some of our own, are pointing to the fact that we have been winning close games against 2 or 3 win teams to prove that we are still a bad team. First and foremost, a win is a win. I don’t care if we win by 1 over the Lions or if we win by 25 over the defending AFC Champions, it’s still a win. And, how do you fault a team for winning the games the NFL puts on its schedule? Plus, everyone focuses on our 3 wins against the Rams, Raiders, and Seahawks. That’s three of the seven wins. The other four are against such horrible teams as the Patriots (7&5), Broncos (7&5), Toronto (6&6) and the "better than their record" Chargers (4&8). I know it’s "any given Sunday" and all, but why would you bash on a team for winning games "it’s supposed to win" and ignore the games against the better record teams?
I really like having a plasma cannon that turns comments to goo. That’s an awesome thing. Too bad Matty doesn’t think we can get the tech guys to make that happen.
I have a new term. BNP. Bad News Phans. These are the fans who are always out to proclaim something is wrong with the team. How we will blow our lead. How horrible we are. These are the fans that you really want to just walk up and punch in the throat. Okay, maybe a little over the top violence there, but still. At least ask yourself, if all you do is scream about how screwed up the team is, can you really be considered a "fanatic," as that’s the root of being a "fan?"
Following on that, I hate Bandwagon fans (not to be confused by BRANDwagon fans). Not because they can’t be fans. Not because they don’t have the right to root for whomever they chose. I hate them because they come in trying to make it seem like they have always been there and then they are (typically) the first off the BNPs. Just an observation. I’m not trying to call anyone out, I’m just stating MY opinion.
Two more things. First, OntheGo stated something in a post. That this team has "work to do." I think that is a very, very astute observation. We all as fans need to be careful with our expectations. We forget that this team is actually a work in progress. We are doing great right now, but there’s still a lot this team needs to do to actually be great. We’ll get there, we just have work to do.
And, my final observation for this week. CP10 may be a genius as well. His statement, "More games are lost than are won," is a very, very valid point. The only addendum I have for that is, a team must be in position to win as the other team loses. We were never in that position last year. This year, we are. That’s a major difference between a bad team and a good team.
I know this is long. Maybe, if I am allowed to continue to post in here after this novel, I will figure out how to be concise. Until then, if you have read this whole thing, thank you. If not, I can’t really blame you. Hope you all have a good week. Now, let’s go destroy Toronto!

Thanks man.
I don’t know if I rate into the weekly article group, but I figured I would post on Wednesday morning (late Tuesday night for all of you in the real world), to get out of the way of Nicky’s Balls and your Mind. I like just being able to write whatever I have thought of during the week.
Thanks for reading!

Another fine epic Mosul
I personally would love to see some good old cold weather smash mouth offense and defense from the Phins during ‘Mission 4W’. If we could pull it off, it would force teams have to really wonder, should they spend time on Wildcat defense prep or gear up for double tight end match-ups. You have to think that drive blocking for the running game is a simpler approach for an offensive line with so many new faces.

Fun read.
Lots of insightful stuff. It’s really great to see you so involved, living half a world away. This whole community is such a blast – I look forward to checking in every few days or so.
By the way, I’m not just referring to our opponents as Toronto. For this week, they’re the Toronto Argonauts.

Great post
You’re absolutely right that one more win means we go from the worst record in franchise history to a non-losing record. In fact, each week one more win gives us something special:
-Against Toronto, one win assures us of a non-losing record.
-Against San Fran, one win assures us of a winning record.
-Against KC, one win assures us of a chance to make the playoffs (with help).
-Against that green team near the Giants, one win assures us of the division title.
It never seemed easier to take the remaining schedule one game at a time!

Great Article, MD......."BNP. Bad News Phans."
ya know, everyone gets down at some time or another, or your simply either not a true fan, or not human, take your pick….. personally speaking, its not the ‘’oh &^%$ i can’t believe that happened…‘’ ’s or the ’’another GD TD? wtf??….‘’, or even the ’’ i can’t believe we lost, we so needed that win, …." kinda thing that gets to me….. it’s the ‘dire predictions’ thing….such as … ‘and now they’re gonna throw a 5o yd pass for a TD that will end our season just like all the other seasons, cus were dolphans and that’s the way its always gonna be….." … i hate that…. i believe, to a certain extent, in the concept of ‘positive affirmations’ and the power of positive [or negative] thoughts….and in my opinion, contributing ‘dire predictions’ is not helpful to the team, the fans, or anyone at all, save our football rivals… again, everyone has their moments, and the truth should always be represented imo, however… hurting the teams chances of winning, and.or irritating other fans w/out necessity seems to constitute ‘being less than a true fan’ in my book… just my opinion, was wondering what ya’ll thought?

I agree Krab
it takes the same amount of energy to be positive as it does to be negative. Why not just manage your energy in the right way for yourself, first and foremost, and with others? True in life as well as in football.

Just posted about fans as well, lol
I feel kinda differently. Some people aren’t relentlessly positive, as long as they WANT the team to do well, and really care about the team, then in my book they’re fans.
People who flat out diss the team for no reason all the time or troll, as opposed to giving constructive critisism though, yeah obviously those people suck. But you shouldn’t have to be a propaganda machine for your team to be a fan.

i just read your 'fan post'
and i agree, its really no ones place to dictate ‘how’ to be a fan……and ‘propaganda machines’ can be as irritating as ‘dire prediction-ers’, valid point indeed….and this is a tough subject to write on, too, hard to put into words…here’s a ‘for instance’ though…when i watching the broncs vs. fins… remember that ‘’bad call’? [according to broncs fans anyway], when all the fans started booing, being totally negative? that was the moment i felt we had won the game…..the home filed advantage can work against you, not just for you…ask any Eagles fan lol… anyway, you are correct, there is no real ‘right or wrong’, just putting forth a personal opinion .

Huge point here, huge point
You must NEVER boo the team while they still have a chance to win. To me, that’s unacceptable. When I talk of pessimism, I mean on chat rooms like this. If your actually AT THE GAME, in my opinion as a fan it’s your responsibility to support and cheer the team. I totally agree about the Broncos fans too, the players hear that and they react.

Exactly what krab said
I’m not trying to tell anyone how to be a fan. And I am not trying to say there should only be positive, propaganda style posts. I am just saying that being overly negative ALL the time is annoying.
Just as if last year all someone talked about was how we were still going to win the Super Bowl, post after post, they would be just as annoying.

Well! 2 things..
1st off, if after a lost a fan(?) said that we need to star thinking about next year, that bothers me a lot. Than you read , this same fan(?) after last week win, that we are in the mix of things, it make me think about how many type of fan there are. At the end, i will keep been the OPTIMISTIC one. Cann’t be a realism one.
2nd I’m a fanatic and i can not stop believing the unbelieveble. In soccer, Santos Laguna(from the Mexican league) was about to go down to a second class league(decenso) because of there record in the last 5 years. A year later they are the Mexican champs. Sorry if i anoy somebody, to be honest, i will NOT apologies for been a fanatic of the Dolphins.

damn strait brother, i dare say no one on this blog would ask that of ya….i’ve said some pretty coarse things in the name of the Fins and ive even openly apologized to Matty for disrespecting his blog w/ my choice’s of words, but not for my team spirit! we all should be spirited fans imo, or we have no business being a fan of a team as great as this one!!! As they say, “It takes all kinds” … personally, i *&%$ hate to lose!!! [punches wall, kicks dog, screams obcenities like a madman] … i take it very hard when the fins lose, [last yr was like the movie ‘Groundhog day", only in in Hell] probably not even fit for conversation [the kids avoid me lol] but i generally bounce back by wed, thurs…. and then im as optimistic as a kid diggin in horseshit looking for a horse… so i guess i’m just sayin we’re all different, and entitled to be so, as long as we don’t work detriment to our cause, in any capacity… otherwise you can call yourself a dolphin fan, but you may as well be wearing a Brette Favre jersey…. nothing wrong w/ being spirited though, that’s for sure…. hell, that’s exactly why were 7-5 instead of 3-9 like ‘the experts’ predicted : )

agree with what you’re saying. I’ve learned that a football game, although it sucks when they lose, and will put me in less than favorable mood, doesn’t ruin my week like it used to in younger days.
Two things that you said that i really lol’d on. How last year was like Groundhog day, man oh man, you hit that one square on the head. And about being so optimistic and the horse…..lol again on that one.

For example. I want the fins the win the division. I now think they probably (possibly) can and will. But I see the flaws in our team, and would be amazed if we won the Super Bowl. I won’t stop cheering till our season’s done though, hopefully some time near my birthday (usually falls on the Super Bowl, at least it used to.)

GREAT READ buddy! You really voice and reflect what I as a fan feel as well. I’ve been down the Dolphin road quite a few years and you could put parts of this article in each and every year as a “reminder” to some. How we win, the bandwagon thing, and BNP’s come to mind first and foremost.
Really good read. Take care!

Great article, I agree with almost everything up there.
Was just thinking about CP10 for MVP myself. If we get to 10-5 and are playing the Jets in primetime, the media will give him some consideration. They aren’t right now because no one expects us to get to that point. We as fans know better. I kinda think though that in a year without any ground breaking offensive performances that a defender should be given a chance. The two best teams this year, the Giants and Titans, both win with defence. After years of Colts Patriots shoot-outs, I think it would suit this season to give a defender the gong. Just don’t ask me who, haha.
Kinda disagree about the fan thing though. One thing I dislike is fans telling others how they should enjoy the team or the game of football. I know plenty of people who love following sports for the misery – it relieves stress, maybe makes them feel better about their life, whatever. I quite enjoy the company of a lot of these pessimists, a lot of the time they’re only having fun. Now, if they’re trolling or looking for attention, then yeah they can piss off for sure.
At the same time you have the opposite kinda fan, the one where if you make a legitimate negative point about the team, say for example, that the Giants would probably kill us as it is, all lot of people will jump down you’re throat with the old ‘YOU GOTTA BELIEVE’ song and dance. No chance for conversation. Is that fun? Life takes all sorts of people, and I’d like to think our football team would take them too.

About the fans
I agree with you. A fan who says that the Giants will kill us is not a BNP. They are just realistic. And a fan who is over the top positive can be just as annoying. But, to me, a fan moves into BNP realms when ALL the do is forecast doom and gloom. As krab said:
and now they’re gonna throw a 5o yd pass for a TD that will end our season just like all the other seasons, cus were dolphans and that’s the way its always gonna be….."
It’s those guys who ALWAYS post that the world is ending and that the team sucks. Even in a win.
Maybe you are right. Maybe it is enjoying misery. Maybe I am trying to tell a fan how to enjoy a game. But, at the same time, if you are following the live threads in here and suddenly someone posts somethign completely negatire for no apparetn reason, it really does change the attitude of the thread. Suddenly it’s not talking about the game anymore. It’s all about the doomsday talk of that one fan. Maybe telling a fan how to root for a team is wrong, but only talking bad in a post of people trying to be positive, root for their team, and enjoy the game and thread is similarliy trying to tell positive fans how to enjoy their team.
Just a thought…

Yeah, I see what you're talking about here
Because those fans are actively trying to bring others down, the ones in the game thread I mean. That’s never cool. It’s one thing to say that to a friend in exasperation, but to a group of people online who don’t want to hear it? Then you should leave it out. You need to judge the mood, in real life and on the internet. And if you can’t enjoy a win, you’re not a pessimist, you’re just an ass – winning is the point of the game.
I think the point about having a balanced opinion has been made though, damn that was a in-depth conversation up there! You start some deep sh-t, Mosul!
Football isn't a matter of life and death - it's far more important than that.

But, hey, discussion is the point of this place, so I guess I am good at starting that.
Thanks – I really do that that as a compliment.

It took 3 coffee breaks, and a few trips to the bathroom to "powder my nose" but I finished this beast
all kidding aside, great write up, and I am 100% in agreement regarding 40 run plays a game. it’s funny how something as simple as PTR can control the entire balance of a game, and seeing as how we aren’t “great” yet (although I always consider the Fins to be great, even last year; unconditional love, what can i say) we need that factor to weigh heavily in our favor. a finsxfactor, one could say ;)
but i’m still mr. optimist and say 11-5 record, SB champs. and it’ll be a nice short bus ride back to miami for the parade [mayhem].
can you imagine what Miami would be like if the Dolphins won the damn Super Bowl? shit would be BONKERS

this was a great read i agree with you that we should be satisfide with the fact that we are better then last year but i think the fans are exited about the fact that we have a chance to finish 11-5 or 10-6 and if we don’t maybe at the end of the year we can look back at being better but right now go fins!!!!

Good post.. keep the dream alive
Sure we have to be realistic sometimes and we aren’t the “powerhouse” team we want to be right now..but we were 1-15 and are now a contender…thats incredible and for that, I am greatful and absolutely pumped about the end of the season. We have to count our blessings for this season and for what has happened this off season and during the season. No matter what happens, we have to be proud and optimistic about next year but for now..one game at a time and let’s keep the dream alive and hope/speak the best for the coming weeks and see how it all plays out…it’s going to be exciting.. and all I’m thinking about right now is the HUGE game this weekend..that I’m going to…it’s a record breaking game..first in Canada (reg season) and against a huge rival.. I’m so pumped and going to soak it all in..no matter what happens..but I think we’ll win…and win in a good fasion too!

Refreshing :D
Your post actually made me sign up for an account; I cannot agree more with the majority of your points. However, the one point which I fancied the most was about the individuals who are jumping on the bandwagon. ;/ Last season my boss was a Dolphin fan, but by mid-season he “became” a Giants fan. I am from New Jersey so the majority of the football fans support the Jets ( i say screw the Jet…hopefully next week we will be tied for first :D) or Giants fans. The funny thing is my boss is now magically a Dolphin fan again.
I don’t understand how people can team hop. I have been a Dolphins fan my whole life; win or lose I will always be a Phin fan. Anywho, awesome post. It kept me busy in class.

I feel special being able to bring in people to the site. Welcome. I’ve only been here for two months, so I am still really learning my way around the place. These guys are awesome, very friendly, and very open to you saying anything you want to say – within reason.
At least your boss didn’t go to the complete darkside and take the Jets….

It is Refreshing
BeaNXIII you are so right. I have been a Dolphin fan my entire life, I don’t really know how I became one (I live on the west coast). I geuss I do because my Dad does. And I think he does because of one player. Can anyonne geuss who that player is??? If you geussed Larry Csonka, you would be wrong, it is the one and the only Dan Marino! Mister stud. Any way, as I was saying, How can you be a real fan if you can’t stick with your tema through the hard, and the easy times?
Who cares how we win games? I do, but if I were to pick between barely winning and losing, which would I pick? No brainer, I would prefer to win.
I would like to add on about no one noticing us. I am glad no one notices us. No one really realized the Giants last year until they got to the NFC Chapmionship. And even after they won the, they still weren’t respected, or expected to win the superbowl. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we will be able to make it to the Superbowl. But I like where we are right now. No one expects anything of us. No one is talking about us because it is hard to imagine us to get to the playoffs, we are barely winning the ones we are supposed to win, and winning the ones we aren’t expected to win. What would you think if I told you that next year, the Lions could be playoof contenders? It would be extremely hard for me to beileve. Anyway thanks for reading and pray the Dolphins win this coming Sunday, and hte following ones after that.

What scenario would you guys choose:
Scenario 1- Starting Qb- CP10
Developing Qb- Matt Ryan
Starting left tackle- Someone drafted with second round pick (used for Henne)
Scenario 2- Things just like they are.
I am just curious about how you might feel

I really like all of your posts bud.
Mainly because they are positive without being “rose colored”. :)
I kind disagree about the way we are winning though. My concern is that we are playing russian roulette. I think we HAVE to get the D-line, QB pressure fixed. I am not concerned about our Offense (did I actually just type that?). And I really like the way they have learned to take control of the game at the end.
Green side out. :)
