Dolphins keep on rolling; knock off Niners to win 3rd in a row
It was yet another tough, heart-stopping football game for the Dolphins. It took all 60 minutes to decide. Dolphin fans everywhere were definitely on the edge of their seats. Hearts pounded. Stomachs ached. Throats were sore from screaming.
Ah yes - this is what it feels like to play meaningful December football. And despite all the pain and suffering that we all might have felt as this game played out, I wouldn't have it any other way.
As this team has done time and time again, the Dolphins made just enough plays and defeated the 49ers to win for the 7th time in 8 games. That's right - the Miami Dolphins, who won just one game last season, are 7-1 in their last 8 and are officially one of the hottest - if not the hottest - team in the NFL.
WINNING WHEN THE NUMBERS SAY OTHERWISE
"All wins ain't cute, but a 'W' is always pretty." That's what Jason Ferguson said following the Dolphins's win over SF on Sunday.
And if you were to just simply look at the numbers from Sunday's game, you would think that the scoreboard was incorrect. Consider these figures:
The 49ers ran 79 offensive plays, 37 more than the Dolphins. They out-gained the Dolphins by 70 yards. They picked up 24 total first downs, 13 more than the Dolphins. They were 8/17 on 3rd down. They had 13 plays of 10 or more yards. The Dolphins committed 8 penalties to SF's 4. And the Niners held the ball for 17 more minutes than Miami.
And yet the Dolphins found a way to win this game - a game that had the feeling of a playoff game. It was intense. It was physical. The crowd was loud all game. And when it mattered most, the Dolphins were the players making plays. That is playoff football, indeed. And just as it is in the playoffs, it doesn't matter how you get the win. Like Ferguson said, a win is always pretty.
DEFENSE STEPS UP WHEN IT HAS TO
Yes, the 49ers gained 318 yards of offense and converted nearly 50% of their third downs. Yes, they had 13 plays of over 10 yards. But they only had 9 points. When you're talking defense, it's that points total that matters. Nothing else.
Sure, between the 20s, this Dolphins' defense didn't look very sharp. But don't that let deceive you. The Fins again employed the "bend but don't break" theory of defense and kept the 49ers out of the endzone. And as you all know, that's now 3 full games (12 quarters) that the Dolphins haven't allowed a touchdown - the first time the Dolphins have accomplished such a feat since 1973.
And from my perspective, it all started with the pass rush. Using a combination of blitzes, the Dolphins picked up 5 sacks and many more QB hurries. It seemed like Shaun Hill was under pressure. And if not for Hill's impressive pocket awareness and mobility, he likely would have been sacked at least 3 or 4 more times.
It was also the pass rush that stepped up in key moments to make plays. I think back to two, in particular. The first was the Niners' final possession of the 1st half. They had the ball 1st & 10 at Miami's 28 yard line before a sack by Charlie Anderson, a 5 yard penalty, and a sack by Nathan Jones knocked SF out of FG range and forced them to punt. Great defensive calls by Paul Pasqualoni and great execution on the field.
The other moment I think to, of course, is Joey Porter's game-ending sack of Shaun Hill. Porter was held in check for most of the game. But when the game was on the line on 4th & 10 at Miami's 21 - with Miami's playoff hopes on the line - it was Porter, the leader of this defense, who made the game's biggest play. He blew right by the right tackle after simply getting leverage on him and ended this heart-pounding game.
The best part of Porter's game-sealing play? He called it. According to Tony Sparano's post-game press conference, Porter actually told Sparano at halftime that he would make some kind of game-changing play. He said to Sparano, "I'm a closer." Indeed he is. And after that play, Joey can celebrate any way he chooses. He chose to rip off his helmet on the field and throw it. I'm cool with that. And if he had decided to rip off somebody's head and throw it, I would have been cool with that, too.
QUICK HITS
-I always heard that a good way to criticize somebody or something is to first give a compliment and then say the complaint. So, first, my compliment. Nice job by Dan Henning on coming up with some creative offensive formations. Splitting out David Martin as a wide receiver worked out well. And I really like the idea of putting Ronnie Brown in motion, splitting him out wide. It usually got him lined up with either a linebacker of a safety - a big mismatch. I hope to see more of that in the coming weeks.
-And now for my criticism. The Dolphins need to run the ball more. Ronnie Brown had just 3 carries in the first half - which is really unacceptable. And 11 total touches in the entire game for Brown is just wrong. It should be illegal. I hate to criticize after a win, but it has to be done. Ronnie needs the ball more.
-What a tale of two halves for Chad Pennington. In the first half, Pennington was 8/11 for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns. In the second half, Chad was 4/8 for 25 yards. But hey, like all of you, I still love him.
-Let's hear it for these tight ends! Five of Chad's 12 completions were to his tight ends. David Martin's catch was just spectacular. Where was that last year? And congrats to Joey Haynos on his first career catch - which was for a TD. And don't be surprised to see him more involved. He's a 6'7 monster and could really become a force in the redzone.
-On the flip side, the lack of production from the receivers on Sunday is a slight cause for concern. Let's just hope for better production next week.
-Both Jason Ferguson and Kendall Langford played damn well on Sunday. The Niners were very physical at the point of attack, but both Ferguson and Langford did a good job standing their ground.
-Please lock up Yeremiah Bell with a new contract.
-Brandon Fields is slowly becoming a very good punter. A lot of Miami's success on Sunday is thanks to Fields' ability to pin the Niners deep and not let the ball get into the endzone for the touchback.
-Did you know that Chad Pennington broke a Dam Marino record on Sunday? His run of 17 consecutive completions, dating back to last week's game, broke Dan's previous record of 15.
-Yes, I praised the defense. But they have got to do a better job of getting off the field and not allowing drives of 16, 16, and 13 - eating up 22 minutes of the clock.
-No turnovers yet again. Only 10 this season. The NFL record is 14.
FINAL THOUGHT
Despite the negatives, "Mission 3W" has officially become "Mission 2W." Like all of you, I'm not sure my heart can take any more of this. But I'll gladly take another month or so of games like this.
Next up is Kansas City - another game that won't be as easy as some probably want to think it will be.
Let "Mission 2W" begin!

gotta like these numbers (from the game recap on NFL.com)
" Miami (9-5) clinched a winning record to become just the third team since 1970 to rebound from a one-win season with a winning record, joining the ’97 Jets and ’92 Colts.
" San Francisco lost despite having more first downs, total yards, rushing yards, completions, third-down conversions and time of possession.
" The Dolphins are 9-0 this season when holding opponents under 20 points.
" The 49ers fell to 3-4 under Mike Singletary.

9-0 when holding the opponent under 20..
also means 0-5 when allowing more than 20… just sayin…
What I’m really saying is that we win with Defense. We are not a scoring machine, by any stretch of the imagination, but we score enough to give our D a cushion and allow the guys like Porter, WAllen, YBell, and the rest of this nasty defense to make the plays to win the game.
Our formula for this season has been, Offense puts you ahead, Defense closes the door.

The playoff push continues...
and if you think next week will be any different.. you’ll probably be mistaken.. likely be a close, hard fought game.. I just hope the weather stays decent out there in K.C.. so far it’s above seasonal.. don’t want to look ahead but damn, that last game of the year against the Jets is going to be COLOSSAL!

and I second what Matty says..
and yes, it’s been said here a ton of times…almost every game all season.. Ronnie needs to get more rushes!! PERIOD! like he said..it should be illegal! look at today.. 10 rushes for 67 yards…that’s almost a 7 yard average! and he only gets the ball 10 times!! in a game like this where our T.O.P. is being crushed… I just don’t get it.. at all.. we may very well be winning…but we’re playing with fire…

True
I’m starting to get concerned.. Each week, I’ve tried to look deeper into the game to find reasons why he isn’t getting more touches, and it’s getting harder and harder to figure out. He really didn’t have too much success running until the 2 long rushes on our final drive. They accounted for 32 of his 67. That means on the other 8 carries accounted for 35, which is still a terrific avg of 4.4. The offense was stagnant yesterday.
I’m actually hoping for a poor weather game in KC for a couple reasons. A) It will force the Chefs to play into our strength (run defense), and B) It will force us to play a more physical offensive style, giving more carries to Ronnie AND Ricky, and we should be able to grind it out and wear them down and PTR them into submission.

I wrote something a few weeks back about the Fins need to find a way to deal with the spread offense.
SF was who I thought they were… a Mike Martz offense, tempered slightly by Singletary, but dangerous when cornered. They spread the field when they got behind and we had to deal with it. Well, it wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough. The Fins blitzed often and forced Hill into some throws he wasn’t ready to make. At least one throw was over the head of a wide open Bruce (he must be an Aussie).
But I was wondering why we didn’t tighten up the coverage on Bruce? I mean, what are they doing letting some 100yr old dude be that wide open on 3rd downs?
I’ll take a “W” any way we can get it, but I was a bit disappointed with a few things. First, when the Offense got the ball back with 9 minutes 21 seconds left in the 4th, they couldn’t get a 1st down, stay on the field, and run more time off the clock. This has been their M.O. but they didn’t seem to be able to get it going this game. Also, not second guessing here, but at the time Miami attempted the missed field goal, I thought it would make more sense to go for it on 4th down due to the wind and field position. Finally, two quick hits about the run game: I am there with you Matty on the lack of run plays, and in particular, the lack of Ronnie Brown. You have got to get the ball in his hands more often. And when you have 3rd or 4th and inches, Polite has been money; why give the ball to anyone else? On that one play, Polite was past the 1st down marker and would have had the first down BUT HE DIDN"T HAVE THE BALL. Instead, they made him lead blocker and gave the ball to Ricky, who got stopped behind gthe line.
Note to coaches: Continue to innovate, but remember what gotcha here in the first place.
Congrats Fin Fans…. KC on tap. :)

The number now is 10
I love the fact that we have come so far, so fast. But…..yea, there is a but, we need to do so much better in some areas. Where oh where is our running game? Teams are starting to figure us out. We have no deep threat. They can cheat up, play man to man, and use their pass rush and put us into precarious positions. Plus…..we aren’t even trying to run lately. I dunno…maybe I’m looking a gift horse in the mouth…but man. We could be doing better on offense. PTR has become, tapping some pebbles.

Nearly had a heart attack watching this game. I decided to order a Cobb Salad while watching the game in honor of #38.
I must admit I was impressed with Shaun Hill. Seems like a more shakable version of CP10. He’ll be pretty good once he learns how to not get rattled by a dominant defense.
by Saxonthebeach on Dec 15, 2008 1:53 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I second that Saxon..
Hill is a fairly decent QB…and an up and comer…I think he’s going to be a pretty good QB one day.. and even next year, this San Fran team will likely me much better (if healthy).. I think that Hill showed today (and the past few weeks) that he has what it takes to lead a team.. he made a lot of good plays out there today…thankfully our D kept him out of the endzone when needed…but watch out for him..

btw.. D.WARE got THREE sacks tonight vs Giants...now has 19! 1.5 ahead of Porter
yep..couldn’t believe it but Ware got 3 sacks tonight! HE is now on a possible pace to beat Strahan for the all-time record…and not Porter.. unless he gets 6 in the next two games.. I would love to see Porter get the overall sack lead for the year..but he is behind the 8-ball going into the last two games.. he should catch and pass the all-time Dolphin record of 18.5 but likely won’t get the record and likely won’t be ahead of Ware..but either way, he’s kickin some serious butt!
by dolphinsfan4life on Dec 15, 2008 2:24 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
still
that’s a very impressive franchise record, considering all the great defensive players that have played in Miami. Ware has been a monster lately though, that’s the second game in the past few weeks he’s had 3 sacks..

More of Ronnie and less of penne can only help the team….
btw: did anyone else notice the heck of a blocking Carey did on the wildcat first down on the last drive. he made the first down possible as he got to the second level and essentially shut down the angle to ronnie….. best block i’ve seen him do all year.

Yeah
We need to run Ronnie Brown more. I don’t mind passing it as long as we take time off the clock and win the battle of possesion. But when are passing game isn’t doing to hot I think we just need to give the ball about 20 to 25 times to Brown and about 10 to 15 carries to Ricky. Mix in Cobbs and Polite and then I think our running game will go up nicely. I agree our defense needs to get off the field but I think the problem was that our offense never stayed on the field to long so our Defense got tired but still held off a TD.

Play better
We simple need to play better. Our defense played a little better yesterday, but still, how good did they actually do? If they did so good, how come they had the ball for 38 minutes of hte game, I think it was that. But still, they could have payed better. But still, beggers can’t be choosers. We got the job done when it was needed most, and that should count for something.
Yes I absolutely agree. He was 60 yards on 10 carries. How is that bad? That is 10 yards a carry. That is incredible, and yet they couldn’t give it to him even 15 times. That is unacceptable. We have so much talent etc. We have been over this a tousand times. But still Pennington played well. I saw a couple of his passes float because of the wind. Ones that would have completed if it weren’t for the wind. Other then that, it was a very intense game.
Thanks all for reading again. Until next time.

Ginn
I’m waiting for Ted Ginn to get his head out of his ass and start helping out his teammates in the passing game.
Matty asked us Ginn bashers to apologize several weeks back because he had a nice game but, not surprisingly, he has essentially disappeared ever since.
He’s had more than his share of key drops that have stalled drives the last few weeks, too.
Ginn has just 7 catches for 79 yards since Camarillo was lost for the season three weeks ago and Bess has thoroughly outplayed him.
Maybe Ginn should apologize to Dolphin fans.
Sorry, not trying to be a hater – but I can’t stand seeing million dollar talents succumb to ten-cent heads.

i agree with you
i am pretty frustrated with Ginn in the return game. While I hear people blaming the blocking, I’m still seeing Ginn making poor decisions. He doesn’t make guys miss and he ever seem to get any yards after first contact. When I watch Bess, I always have the feeling he could break one, but I don’t get that feeling with Ginn anymore. If we could take Bess and Ginn and make one player out of them, how good would he be?

Here is a good summary of Ginn's performance of late.
I happen to agree with it:
WR Ted Ginn Jr. – He’s drawing plenty of defenders, opening up the field for everyone else, but Ginn isn’t make the most of the opportunities he’s being presented during games. For the third straight game he dropped a key pass that stalled a drive. Ginn also failed to turn a short drag route upfield on a third-down catch late in the game, which stalled another drive. His kickoff returns are also fizzling because he’s spending too much time setting up blocks that aren’t there. An elite returner of his caliber should be averaging more than 20.5 yards per return, which is what he’s produced on 32 opportunities this season. Not all of that can be blamed on poor blocking. Over the past two games Ginn has contributed three catches for 24 yards. Ginn’s got 50 catches this season, and is well on his way to leading the Dolphins in receptions. But is he really a No. 1 receiver?

Great write up Matty
i think the only reason we didn’t see lots of R & R is that we got shut down in the second half, much as we try to do to other teams, but i think Sporano intended to PTR 2nd half, just didn’t really get a chance to… SF kept our D on the field, our O couldn’t get into a rhythm, and thus they dominated the clock…its a great game plan, and it almost worked on us, classic Singletary crap…..lucky our D decided to represent as well….and though these games keep staying close, week in week out, i keep thinking ’what great experience for playing playoff games…."

I am so god damn tired...
of yelling at my TV every sunday for the Dolphins staff to give ronnie brown the ball more. Its getting outrageous. 0 carries in the first quarter? Are you kidding me? Don’t misunderstand what I’m about to say, because I am GRATEFUL that miami has won as many games as they have, and I am truly ecstatic with any win, even if it is an ugly, close one against a “terrible” team. But make no mistake about this: These games don’t HAVE to be this close! Was it REALLY necessary after Bess’ punt return to midfield to throw the ball 3 times in a row and punt? Was it really necessary for us to pass the ball and then punt without running any time off when we had the ball with 8 minutes left? NO. We have #23 on our team going to waste, being spelled almost literally after every carry for a back who is INFERIOR at this point in his career. I like how tough Ricky Williams runs, and I have been impressed by the plays he has made in the passing game, but he is not in any way, shape, or form deserving of being in a 50/50, 55/45, or even 60/40 split in touches with Brown.

Ricky
gained 23 yards on 7 carries yesterday, and half of that was on one run. On his other 6 carries, he gained 12 yards. I know Ronnie is only a year removed from surgery and they may be trying to keep him healthy, but he is ready to touch the ball at least 17-18 times a game, with 20+ carries every third week perhaps. He is fully capable of handling that load. 10 times? averaging like 13 carries a game on the season? Unacceptable. And for those of you who watched the game on NFL network, did you hear the sideline reporter who said she had spoken with Sparano at halftime, and reported that he said “You will see a lot of Ricky Williams this half?” WHY? My heart honestly sunk when he said that. At that time, Brown had like 3 carries in the game! It’s getting so damn frustrating watching all these drives stall that Ronnie has no part in, because I know if he were featured in the offense we would not be winning games close. We would be winning decisively.

the coaching staff doesn't seem to have confidence in the O-line for run blocking.
i think it is that simple…. you can’t just “give him the ball” and think that is going to solve the problem. If we can’t run block, it will just be “run run run punt” instead of “pass pass pass punt”.

Oh yeah
I have been touting this for a about a month or so here at work with no one who will agree with me. I wouldnt be surprised to find out that much of the game plan for the past few weeks was kind of a “return to basics” mindset from the coaches. With basically a revamped line since Smiley went down they are having to find out what the back ups are actually capable of during a game rather than just practice. I wouldnt be surprised to see a wild opened offence if we went down against anyone. No need to “break the glass” as LCFF said is something that I agree with 1000%. One of the things about Henning that I used to hate and have come to love is that “well if it works I will stick with it till it doesnt” mentality. I am all for not using the WC formation for a while and breaking it out with HUGE success catching some deserving team unawares (god wouldnt it be great to see in the second half of the propellers game and see it blast out for like 3 or 4 TD’s?) but frankly if we keep winning then who cares? Wins are all that count!

ja mon!
I agree with you. :)
the “run it til they stop it” mentality i LOVE! how many times do you see a team do something well, like run the ball (see Buffalo last sunday), only to get away from what is working and end up failing?
I really think they are thinking toward the playoffs. the Fins won’t match up well against some of the more talented teams on paper, but they are solid enough to win a well played chess match with anyone. If they need to break something out to beat the stinkin jets, i’m sure they will.
But wouldn’’t it be even better to beat the jets “mano a mano” and then break out our fancy stuff on a playoff round? :)

Well Don Sparano seems to have it locked up
and I would be very happy to see us not have to break out anything crazy agains the propellers….and yes it would be totally awesome to see us manhandle the stinking turds and beat them in our base offense. Hope to see us save the innovative stuff for the playoffs as needed. I think that is the real key. Use the crazyness only as we need to use it to stay in a game al la against the patsies. Think about it…if we had just had one or two defensive stops in the 3rd against them and kept up the shootout pace we would have walked away with the W in that one. We PROVED that we COULD shoot it out as needed but that takes US out of OUR gameplan and it seems to be that our coach knows what he is doing so why let them dictate what we are planning on doing? If it happens then I believe that we have that extra sheet of playcalling that is the “break in case of emergency” set of plays. I for one have become comfortable with getting the lead and then just stifiling EVERYTHING to win.
Of course I would love to see us put up tons of points and win easily but the one thing with that is then you get the opponents up for a comeback and thats not a mindset you want your enemy to have. You want them thinking “were still in this…just drive it down…no need to panic” because when they look up and see its the 4th quarter and we have the ball they all of a sudden know they are beaten when we go on a 7 min drive and leave them scratching thier heads wondering how they lost. Put em to sleep and slowly choke off thier air so that its not untill they realise they are about to die that they panic and at that point they are vunurable and prone to mistakes. Thats when you smile and cinch tight the plastic bag and watch them die while we move on to the playoffs!
