Chad Pennington and the Steve Nash Effect

So I'm going through one of my daily sports site rounds on the interwebs today, and after perusing a number of similar pieces, I come across ESPN's MVP voting ballot. Now, granted, more often than not, like Matt Groening, I can be rightfully accused of blatant homerism. But reading some of the names being touted over Chad has left me downright infuriated.

I am all too aware that the MVP trophy is one that is far from aptly-named, that the word 'valuable' is often inconsistently interpreted as an akward combination of spectacular, popular, victorious, inspirational and statistically-congenial. But, at the end of this season, if (and, frankly, only if) the Miami Dolphins claim the AFC East scalp, Pennington has to finish at least top-three in the voting.

But he won't.

The aim of this post is not to slight or belittle any other player's achievements. No running back, in my humble opinion, has had a season worthy of an MVP title, so for the sake of discussion, I'll focus solely on America's favorite position.

(cue a litany of sexual innuendos in the comments section)

Kurt Warner has found the AC Green signature fountain of youth, and has been nothing short of brilliant. Drew Brees is still flirting with The Man's hallowed single season passing yards record. Eli's 20-8 TD-Int. ratio is straight gangster. But Chad, calling plays behind one of the youngest offensive lines in the league, has been working primarily with a still-a-work-in-progress Ted Ginn, Jr., Greg Camarillo (only a handful of receptions prior to this season), and an undrafted Davone Bess (only slightly taller than phinsguy99). I love our young receivers, but enviable they are not. Yet.

Despite all of this, Pennington will probably end the season with his highest ever yard total and, having completed at least 50% of his passes in every game, will distance himself even further from the rest of the pack as the most efficient quarterback in the history of the NFL. But my argument lies not on a bed of numbers and data, but in a cloud of 'intangibles', your favorite commentator's favorite comment.

The Jets' front office made it clear they were fairly unanimous in their pursuit of Favre, but I wonder how many Jets players felt so similarly compelled behind closed doors. The calming effect Pennington has had on our overhauled squad as a team leader has been colorfully spun dozens of times on these boards, so I'll spare you any recycled rhetoric.

To any stubborn nay-sayers, though, I simply suggest you offer them this: if your life depended on someone directing an offense, rousing his teammates and completing one crucial pass in a tight fourth quarter situation, whose hands would you entrust with your fate? Tom Brady, the thinking man's choice, is exempt from the debate just as he is from this year's race. Peyton? This year? Brees? Cutler? Warner? Eli? Fav-ruh?

Please.

I'm not saying Chad is the obvious choice, he's just obviously as sound a selection as anyone else on that list, if not more. Yet no one in the national media seems prepared to acknowledge this.

What I am saying is that if a trophyless Steve Nash can win back-to-back MVPs in the NBA, a trophyless Chad Pennington can win one in the NFL.

For the very same reason.

His value.

Great post

Chad is certainly the Dolphins MVP, and if you look hard enough, and interpret the award for what it should be, Chad would win it. The greatest franchise turnaround in the NFL, a true worst to first scenario, with a team still firmly in rebuild mode.. who else in the NFL is leading that kind of season? And it’s not just because of numbers, which, like you said, are comparable to every QB in the league, but also his leadership, poise, and do-whatever-it-takes-attitude that has us on the very brink of the playoffs after barely escaping a Winless Season a year ago.

The 2 candidates with the most attractive numbers, Brees and Warner, are currently leading talented teams to underacheiving records (IMO). The Saints, with all those weapons on offense, should be at the top of their division instead of the bottom. Granted, it’s mostly because of Brees that they are even at .500, but you can’t be the most valuable player in the league if your team is last in the division. Warner is having a great year, but let’s compare the weapons he has to Pennington’s, and you’ll realize that he has tons of help.

What Pennington has done, with the players around him, and the devastating injuries to 2 starting OLinemen, working with relative nobodies at WR, is ridiculous. This team wasn’t supposed to be 8-5. This team wasn’t supposed to compete for a playoff spot. And I can all but guarantee we wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for Chad. And I hope the MVP voters notice the incredible story going on here in Miami. Will he win it? Probably not. Does he deserve it? Yes. And I hope he gets the recognition he deserves, even if he doesn’t win the popularity contest formerly known as the MVP Award.

The thing I don't get

is why do people sleep on him so much? When he was with the Jets, we all hated him for the colors on his back, but I always respected his game.

On paper, he’s the kind of player the media usually gush over, but for some reason whenever Chad’s name comes up in discussion, everyone automatically leaps to that soft-ass “weak arm” conclusion and dismisses his achievements. Tim Graham is quoted in a blurb for ESPN that no player has had a bigger impact on his team than Pennington, but promptly went ahead and gave his hypothetical MVP vote to Eli.

These things baffle me.

LOL

of course, that’s how they do it at the big network. Make a shocking statement, but stick to the status quo with picks and votes…

like, “The Lions have a definite chance at an upset, this is a trap game for Tennessee for sure. I’m picking the Titans in a blowout.”

I'm always a little wary

of guys who have great seasons with a great team around them. You can never tell how much of their play is because of them, and how much of their play is because of their teammates.

CP10 has been nothing short of amazing this season. I really hope he gets a contract extension soon. Not only because of his play, but also because of the leadership he gives this young team.

Rec’d for your use of the word “interwebs”. And your write up too, but mostly because of interwebs.

Seriously?

Appreciate that, man.....haha

Interwebs should most definitely be the official term. The Chad Pennington of internet synonyms, if you will.

I’mjus’sayin.

I hope he gets it

But what about other potential candidates
Warner
Brees
Ryan

Ryan should get ROY though
Brees didn’t bring a playoff to NO

Right

I agree that I hope he gets it, since he has better MVP credentials than the other two, despite inferior stats. (see above for my reasons why).

He won't get it but he DEFINITELY deserves consideration

It is really unfortunate that MVP’s pretty much HAVE TO HAVE “gaudy” numbers to go along with any other variables to get the MVP nod…and I don’t think that’s fair, even if I (we) are a little biased about this race.. it really is the “intangibles” and true leadership that matters here…sure his numbers aren’t incredible…but I’ll tell you two that are! 8 WINS and ONLY 10 TURNOVERS thus far this season… on top of some of his individual numbers and simply where this team has come from what happened last year…it’s only fair that he should be considered but likely will be overlooked and that’s too bad…he’s definitely the MVP of this team..no questions asked and without him I truly believe we wouldn’t be even close to where we are now….not even close!

well said.

And its also frustrating to hear sports writers mention the “without Peyton Manning, the Colts would be a lot worse off than they are now”. Like we’d be better without Pennington? One thing I hope, is that Henne is in total “sponge mode” soaking up everything that Pennington does and says.
