SB Nation's Mid-Season Studs and Duds Awards
Well the guys here at SB Nation, as we usually do, have voted on our mid-season awards. Below are the results. A big thanks to "BigBlueShoe" of Stampede Blue for putting this together for us.
Clinton Portis is playing like an MVP right now. |
The Studs
NFL Mid-Season MVP: Clinton Portis, Redskins
Comment from David the Falconer at The Falcoholic:
The homer in me wants to say Michael Turner, but he's done the majority of his damage against the league's weakest defenses. Portis has put the Redskins on his back and carried them 100 yards or more down the field most games, and for that he deserves my vote.
Best Player on Offense: Clinton Portis, Redskins
Comment from Skins Patrol at Hogs Haven:
He also has 150 yards receiving and has had his role increase with the injury to Ladell Betts Not everyone knows this, but Portis is the best pass protecting RB blocker in the league and is a big reason why Jason Campbell is playing well this season.
Best Players on Defense: Joey Porter, Dolphins
Comment from BigBlueShoe at Stampede Blue:
I thought this guy was DEAD. How the hell does he have 11.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles? I mean Jeezus, it is only Week Nine and he has 11.5 friggin' sacks! The hell are they feeding them down there in Miami?
Best Rookie: Chris Johnson, Titans
Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:
No explanation needed. Just watch this kid play and it's obvious why he's truly special. Were we really questioning his status as a first round pick six months ago?
Best Coach: Jim Zorn, Redskins
Comment from WCG at Windy City Gridiron:
I hate doing this, but in that division the Redskins should have easily been the worst team.
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has seen better days. |
The Duds
Mid-Season Worst Player: JaMarcus Russell, Raiders
Comment from Dave the Falconer at The Falcoholic:
Consider that this guy was the first overall pick in the draft. Then consider that he can't throw a pass without collapsing into a heap.
Mid-Season Worst Rookie: Vernon Gholston, Jets
Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:
He's learning a new position so this probably isn't fair but seven tackles in eight games for a top six pick is simply unacceptable. You'd think he could at least be a situational pass rusher.
Mid-Season Worst Coach: Jack Del Rio, Jaguars
Comment from Chris at Big Cat Country:
Can I vote for Del Rio and the Jaguars for every possible spot?
The only thing I want to add to this is that I don't understand how Jim Zorn won the "Best Coach" award. He took over a team that made the playoffs last year and was loaded with talent to begin with. I personally voted for - surprise, surprise - Tony Sparano. But I wouldn't have been opposed to Mike Smith winning the award, either. After what he's done in Atlanta, the man would deserve it. But Jim Zorn? Give me a freakin' break.
Oh well.

Think I have to agree with you
Zorn took over a already very talented team. While it is Homerish to say Tony Sparano, he has done a fabulous job so far. He took a 1-15 team and is now 4-4 with wins against New England, Buffalo, San Diego, and Denver. There is also serious talk among sports writers about Miami’s chances of making the playoffs. It is plausible to believe that Miami can make the playoffs this season.
Mike Smith is also deserving, what a freaking mess he had in Atlanta. It’s amazing how they are doing as well.
i got all excited whne i read the title...and i was like finally!!! matty is going to tell us his favorite and most memorable bloggers at phinsider....but no

Matt Ryan: Rookie of the Year
The rookie should´ve been Matt Ryan, it is much harder for a rookie Qb coming into a messed up team carrying big expectations on his shoulders than for a Rb, which usually have little trouble adapting to the NFL, coming into a more than solid team.
Agreed
He’s played fantastic so far.

lol
You voting for him is like saying I voted for Porter as best defensive player. Not very surprising, huh?
Seriously, though, I also think Ryan should have gotten that award.
what about them lineman?

Gholston
So happy when we didn’t take Gholston, one sack against Long and a very good combine showing and everybody said he was the next best thing.
Good read by the coaching staff (although I was a Chris Long fan myself), another work out wonder.

Chris Long isn’t a workout wonder. He’s already got 4 sacks (will likely end the season with 8 or 9) and has 5 or 6 tackles for a loss.
Chris Long is the real deal. And I still stand by my statement that I would have been happy with either Long – though I’m happier we found a franchise LT. But Chris Long is going to be very, very good.
He's talking about Gholston being a workout wonder
and saying he preferred Chris over Jake.

Pretty cool read
What I like is…….There is at least one Dolphin in the “Best of” list, and one Jet on the “worst of” list………you just gotta love that
