Jake Long: Right Decision?....Or Wrong?
In the first overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft, Jake Long was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Everybody knows Jake Long is a great player and everything....but is he really the right decision for a growing franchise?
The last few years, the Miami Dolphins have been terrible. But this year they have started something new. They are growing again. They're going to be a contender in the next few years, I know it. But was drafting Jake Long really the right decision? I mean the O-Line is important...but there are other immediate problems that REALLY need to be fixed. I'm talking about special teams. Flat out, they're horrible. They make such bad plays, I can barely watch them be totally destroyed on special teams. That's why I'm saying, maybe it could have been a good decision to work on special teams instead of the O-Line in the draft. That's all I wanted to say. Thanks for reading. Please comment.

umm..
you’re saying we should’ve drafted a special teamer instead of a franchise LT? Special teamers are not drafted #1 overall. You say the OL is important but there are other problems that neeed to be fixed. But the OL is the most important part of a football team. Without a good one, you can’t run, you can’t pass, and you can’t score. Can’t score, can’t win. Franchise LT’s are rare, and the elite ones are foundations for their respective teams. Jake will be an Elite LT, and he will be a cornerstone of a very good offense in a matter of a couple years.

You're Right
That is true. The O-Line is VERY important. I just think special teams could REALLY use some help right now, because right now special teams is hurting them during games. But you’re right. O-Line is the cornerstone of a good offense. Just trying to make some good advice.

so what can a team do about it
when you’re 11 weeks into the season? Get in a time machine……go back, look at how things have gone and draft accordingly?

No....
No…..but there are some things you could do. I’m sure the D-Phins got a couple of mill laying around, and I just think it would be good if they added somebody in the special teams, and then, I feel, they would be more complete.

Just did that actually
before last week’s game, they signed Eric Walden, who was released by the Cheifs. He’s a wedgebuster on kickoffs and he looked damn good against NE on special teams

Right Decision
just look at the the other top 10 draft picks, only matt ryan looks worthy of number one overall
2 Time Movie Quote Game Winner
So you would rather have drafted a special teams gunner #1?
I’m sorry, but I don’t see eye-to-eye with you on this one. How many games would we have lost this year without Long? Now, how many of those games would the special teams won back? If you made a case for Matt Ryan, then I could maybe see where you are coming from, but a special teamer? Maybe with a second, third, or fourth round pick, but not #1 overall. Especially in this next draft, there are some good cornerbacks and safeties coming out that could play special teams. Michael Jenkins, Vic Harris, Myron Rolle, and plenty others. Jake Long is going to be one of the best offensive linemen in the game in a few years, and we will be lucky to have him.
And you NEVER question Parcells, Sparono, and Ireland. You should know that by know.
Maybe I Said It Wrong...
Maybe this came out wrong…Jake Long was a good choice…..But instead of what the Dolphins worked on, in a couple of the rounds I would have worked on special teams…..Because I really can’t bare to watch them…Exception of Ted Ginn Jr….He’s good…

I see what you are saying
Just the title, “Jake Long: Right Decision?” kinda makes it look like you are asking if you take a special teamer over Long. But I think we were working on other stuff last draft. This draft we will probably work on the secondary, which most defensive backs can play special teams.
Are you serious?
GMs wouldn’t last very long in the league if they filled out the special teams with draft picks. You sign special team players off the FA list.
"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt
Good cornerbacks and safeties can play special teams
You don’t draft special teamers. You draft defensive backs. Most defensive backs can play special teams. Simple.
The Ginnja was taken as Special Teamer two years ago.
Ginn was NOT projected to be a decent WR before the draft. Taking him at #9 overall was HUGELY criticized as a blunder because no one thought he could be a WR. He wasn’t good at route running. He was simply projected for the draft because of his ability to run back kicks at Ohio State.
That’s the best you can ever do at drafting a “Special Teamer.” Your special teams players HAVE to be second/third string players. Look at our best Special Teams guys right now…Cobbs, 3rd String RB. One of the AFC’s best Special Teams guy over the last decade has been Larry Izzo, Miami and New England 2nd String LB. You always draft a guy for their primary Offense or Defense position, never based on their ability to play Special Teams. You make them play special teams once they don’t crack the starting lineup.
I agree we need to address Special teams, but I do NOT think you draft for Special Teams. You draft WRs, LBs, CBs, RBs. You make Special Teams players.

yeah, but we didn't just get Ginn
we got the whole Ginn family for 1 pick. That’s a deal in my book!

Age....
I would rather not disclose my age…..Ok….Now, about Jake Long, You guys are right. I thought it over and most of the D-Phins special teams are not starters…..Except, of course, the great Teddy
