Chad and Matt Cassel
Hey people,
First time poster, but fairly long time reader. I had a question about our man Chad, and I was wondering what you all thought about it.
I know he's been pretty effing good this year, but what do you think the timetable for a guy like that is? He is 32, and has had major shoulder surgery on an arm that was a little weak to begin with. When he came in, I looked at him as a stopgap guy (god knows we've had a few), but with his play this season I am starting to look at him differently. Basically, coming off Matt Cassel's brilliant performance, do you think there will be interest from us when he becomes available this offseason? I am tempted to say yes, because, while Chad has been very solid, I'm just not sure how much longer he can keep it up. Cassel has good size, can make all the throws, and is much younger and injury free (especially b/c he has barely played since high school). Do you guys think we'll have interest? Or, are we happy with Chad-O for as long as he can, and then the Chad Henne era? Obviously, MC would be expensive, and potentially risky, but he sure looks like a starting qb for me (granted, I'm biased b/c I'm a Trojan).
I really enjoy reading all the interesting content on this site, and just wanted to see what everyone thought. Peace.
Dan

I doubt it
I think this regime is trying to build from within, using the draft and developing it’s own guys. Cassel will be expensive, because he’ll be the hottest FA QB on the market. And with one season under his belt, I don’t think you can definitively say that he’s worth it. Sure he looks terrific, nobody’s doubting that. But look at what happened with Derek Anderson. One great season, then very little production this year.
I’m perfectly content to stand pat with the Chad’s, and draft another developmental guy late in next year’s draft. (I’m from the philosophy that you draft a QB every year until you have a good starter and a good backup.)

I would have to say...
That I seriously doubt that we are in the Cassel sweepstakes… and by seriously I mean there is NO way we get involved. The Trifecta has without a doubt came out and expressed their fondness of Henne, and coming from these guys thats high praise.
Now as to CP10 like you said he is 32 but I definetly see him as our QB next year and their is no reason he shouldnt be. Most people on here are gonna want Henne to get the nod during training camp, but unless he is lights out in camp/preseason CP10 is our guy atleast this year and next (barring injury)
CP10 has gone past anyones wildest dreams this year in how he has helped lead this team to where we are now!

i don't think Cassel will excel in another system
i think he’s gonna be the most expensive bust of next yr, personally…excluding Pam Anderson that is….he’s got a strong arm and he’s learning, but i feel he’s [god, it pains me to say it] the result of great coaching scheme, not raw talent.

Welcome aboard!
Be sure to post often!! The more, the merrier.
As far as your question, I think we’re set at QB. Pennington will be the guy for another year or two – in my opinion – and then Henne will take his spot. No need to spend ridiculous money on a player like Cassel who might just be having a “Derek Anderson kind of season” – if you know what I mean. And we see now how D.A. has fared.
