Breaking It Down: The "Wild Cat" Formation
Credit: Breaking It Down: The "Wild Cat" Formation - the PhinPhinatic
Was researching the WildCat formation, and came across this great breakdown of it, so here it is for all those interested.
It is the brainchild of Miami Dolphins quarterback coach David Lee. A formation that he designed while coaching at the University of Arkansas last season. It’s called the "Wild Cat" formation and it gave the New England Patriots DC fits…and honestly, as a former defensive co-ordinator myself, it’s giving me fits as well.
On the dark quiet flight from Arizona to Miami following last weeks loss to the Cardinals, Phins head coach Tony Sparano summoned the QB coach to the front of the plane. He simply said "we have to do something". The two began working on a strategy that had been first implemented during training camp but later shelved after RB Ronnie Brown hurt his thumb.
The Dolphins HC spent about 100 hours at the training facility and about 12 hours total sleeping…likely in his office. On Wednesday, the Dolphins had one of their most productive practices of the year and one of it’s more grueling. At one point Phins RB Ricky Williams said that he was about ready to "Phone it in" or something close to that. Still, hearing that it wore out Ricky was a telling sign of the physicality of it all.

Love the article
sad that no one is posting in here, but I think most of us are in Wildcat overload. It’s the only thing they show or talk about on TV when the Dolphins are brought up, and we want the world to know that the Phins are more than one formation..
However, I’m an X’s and O’s (football plays, not hugs and kisses) guy and I absolutely loved reading this article about the design and execution of our most successful formation so far this season. It seems that with the right players, there are hundreds of plays and options you can do out of such a simple concept. I think that’s the best way to attack a defense. Take a simple, easy to execute concept, and have the ability to attack every part of the defense with it. Like the article points out, Ronnie can run anywhere, throw to 5 different guys, hand to Ricky, who can run or throw, and there’s a million tricks available (double passes, reverses, etc..). It’s already in next year’s playbook for whoever I coach, whether it’s little league or High School JV.

Go to AYFL.com
If I remember correctly, you live in Coral Springs, and they have a damn good program there. You can link to their website from the league site and check it out. All you gotta do is go up to the field and talk to anybody wearing a Blue “League Rep” Shirt about volunteering and they’ll get you all set up. Every team needs coaches so they defnitely won’t turn you away.
I coach for the Tamarac team, and we stink. If you don’t mind the trip, we definitely need some quality coaches.. Let me know.

its alot of fun
and it’s really cool seeing kids that you coach come back to the park a few years later jack-diesel and starting in high school. Biggest reward you can get is a kid coming back to thank you for coaching em up when they were middle schoolers.

been doing it for 7 years actually
started coaching right after I finished playing in the youth league. Playing high school never really worked out because of a couple injuries and issues with the coaches, but I enjoy coaching, like I said, I’m an X’s and O’s guy and I love the strategical aspect of the game. So coaching is a natural spot for me.

haha not exactly
i did warm sections of bench.. but freshmen year I played with my youth team and won a championship, sophomore year I broke my ankle before the first game when one of our fat lineman fell on me while I was longsnapping. Junior year my coach told me I was too small to play WR, I cussed him out, never played. Senior year I tore the labrum in my shoulder and was in rehab for 10 months.
but yes, I was a mainstay on that bench, just usually had a cast or a brace on somewhere lol

When I make it as an NFL coach, I’ll let them quote you in my ESPN puff-piece about my life story.
“he told his high school story online, and it brought me to tears,” finsxfactor said. “It must’ve been rough.”

There's gotta be a league around in Orlando
check online, check with the cities nearby. There’s youth football throughout the state, and I would imagine Orlando would have a good one. And it is a lot of fun.

Pretty awesome
taking the time to put this one together…..hats off to you stiza. I really liked it.
Break down some other formations in the future. Everyone can use a 101 on football plays and schemes now and then.
Just a question….are you related to Jaworski? lol

so like, JawStiza?? lol
agree w/ Nicky, ‘wildcat overload’, but nice read… i always applaud coaching staffs that think outside the box, and though alot of college-type plays wont work in the NFL [usually due to the sheer speed of it], it really depends on the players, and how to best utilize them.. and by that measure, the fins + the wildcat appears to be sheer genius. I sure as hell don’t wanna be the next Def. Coordinbator to coach against it, even if it’s nicky’s little league team lol

I don’t have a Ronnie Brown to eat defenders.
