Feed The Hog!
Hey I was just thinking that if the single wing-wild cat/hog formation is going to continue to be prominently featured, maybe we can add some other players to make it even more dangerous. Part of the reason it has been so succesful is because Pennington has no ego and doesn't mind resting for a few snaps. So adding some mobile college quarterback slash-types could make things interesting. The first guy who comes to mind is Dennis Dixon, but the Steelers don't appear to want to let go of him after his preseason performance. What about other players? Any college experts who can think of some mobile qb's/rb's/wr's out there whose skills don't translate directly to traditional NFL, but might suit our nontraditional scheme?

please no...
lets not turn this into a true college/single wing/wildcat/hog offense. i think the staff is doing a good job using it right now. and we are not going to run this as our base O. we have ran it 6 times against the pats and 11 against the bolts. i truely believe that you will not see it used in a single game more than we used it against the bolts IMHO. the FO isnt going to go out and draft the dennis dixon/ kordell stewert types of players. its a nice wrinkle but cant be used predominatly in the NFL IMHO
Eventually
Opponent D will find ways to limit it’s effectiveness, we saw some of that yesterday with the Chargers limiting it’s success.

Pennington
Pennington is the team leader. this is his team. unless someone is going to come in here for Special teams and also be a threat in this attack then I will have to say no.
here piggy piggy piggy.....
I agree…..this will eventually run its course and other teams will get it figured out. We’ll have it in the playbook and it’ll get some use here and there. But how about this for making a silk purse out of a sows ear….Why not look too the opposite side of the ball for players? Can you imagine Crowder or Roth in motion? Talk about fear of God in the opposing defense when they see who’s blocking for Ronnie or Ricky…..lol.
Just a thought……snort snort snort

sub pennington
the one thing i dont understand about this formation is why do you have pennington out wide. why not just sub a WR for him that can block or be a recieving threat. if pennington is out there, most likely the play is not going to go his way. i can understand that you have pennington in the huddle to fool the defense, so they never know which play is going to be a Wildcat play, but when he goes to the sideline, couldn’t he just jump off the field and a reciever take his place? or would substitution rules prohibit that? it just seems a waste to have him out wide.
there has been at least one occasion
that pennington has come back to take the snap, from the wildcat so that could be one reason, also, i can forsee pennington going out for a pass at least one time.

That and
the double pass. Teams will forget about him because he’s just the 11th guy standing around at WR to make room for Ronnie. I could see him stepping back, taking a screen, and chunking it downfield to Teddy behind the safeties. By the time the D realized the ball was going to Pennington and not a real WR, it’d be too late…
Something to chew on.

that would be something i'd be very into
I like how the wildcat seems to buy us a little more time, except for that play when Ricky wanted to pass but the line was collapsing. I could see the double pass being a very viable option against a team like the Texans, who seem to like the runstop.

Jayson Foster
Don’t know if anybody else remembers, he was an UDFA we signed, but then cut him. Check him out on youtube if you don’t remember, but the kid was electric in college, played WR, RB, and QB. I thought he was gonna make the squad as a return man/specialty player to use for tricky things because of his varied skill set. I think he would be great in this formation because A) its what he did in college, B) he has the quickness to hit the hole off the option and pick up bigtime yards, and C) he puts a real threat of the pass into the formation, which adds to its effectiveness. Ronnie can throw, but I wouldn’t want him to fire one outta the pocket 2 or 3 times a game. But who knows?
