Guys to Develop This Season
Alot has been made lately of when to start Henne, whether it's this season, next season, next week, or whatever. I've said that this season is a stepping stone to next year since the beginning, and I still believe that. This team just isn't good enough to make the playoffs, no matter how down the AFC is. It would be a great story, the ultimate Cinderella story, if you will, but I can't see it happening. Now, I'm not bashing the Phins, not at all, just trying to keep expectations in check and priorities straight. If this year was about making the playoffs, the secondary would've been fixed with flashy FA signings last offseason. If this year was about playoffs, we would've been major players in the Roy Williams deal Dallas made at the deadline. And if this year was about playoffs, Jason Taylor would still be here, instead of Washington's draft picks.
So, with that out of the way, here's a few guys I would like to see moved around and developed, for numerous reasons.
- Jason Allen - Obviously he's no good at safety, as this is the second coaching staff in a row to shelve him in favor of what should be inferior players. So, whatever he's doing in practice isn't impressing anybody. Let's see if he can play Cornerback. He's big (6'1, 200) and fast (4.39 at the combine), and supposedly his biggest drawback is understanding the schemes. So stick him out there on an island and see if he can be successful with just athleticism. What's the worst that can happen, he sucks like the rest of the guys we have out there? Best case scenario, he actually comes into his own, becoming a good corner, and filling a huge hole in our swiss cheese secondary.
- Brandon London - Had some buzz lately on this site, and I'd like to see if it's warranted. He's got the size you look for in a possession receiver at 6'4 215lbs, and he has the ability to beat guys at the LOS and separate, as evidenced by him playing Gunner on the Punt Team. If he can catch, now is the time to find out if he's a playmaker at that spot. Worst case scenario, he has hands like Derek Hagan and remains on special teams. Best case, he's a big target of a receiver in the Marques Colston mold, and becomes a reliable target for Henne next season. If he has game, it also could mean a simple reshuffling of our WR corps would suffice(Ginn, London, Camarillo, Bess), and we could focus that 1st round pick elsewhere.
- Chad Henne - By far the best QB prospect we've had here since Marino (this statement needs an acronym, I'm going with PG, post-God). I trust this staff to handle the maturation of CH from rookie to starter the right way, whichever that way may be. There's evidence of success sitting QB's for a year, and evidence of success throwing them right in, so it depends on the individual player and team. What I want is to see him play in different game situations throughout this season, and to get some starting experience once the team transitions into "build for next year" mode. But for right now, let him run a 2 minute drill, let him run a series in the red zone, let him run a clock-killing drive, and get him some valuable experience in those areas. It can't hurt. And it will only help his develop to play him in meaningful action before he becomes "The Man."
- Any Punter other than Brandon Fields - Seriously, can we get a new punter? Is the Fields Project done with yet? It's not that he sucks always, just when it matters most. He has an incredible knack for shanking balls sideways when we absolutely need to pin a team inside the 20, or booming one outta the endzone when he's got a chance to bounce it down inside the 5. Parcells is building a team that will run the ball, play solid D, and win the Special Teams/Field Position battle consistently. The only thing consistent about Fields is that he contributes to us losing the ST/Field Position battle. Yes, I know, I'm bitching about a Punter. But good Punter's can affect a game more than they're given credit, and bad Punter's can lose you games. Can we start bringing in guys to work out? Who knows, maybe one of em is decent.
Anybody I missed? Any guys you would like to see get some action? Oh, and don't say Wilford, he sucks. Plain and simple.

Parmele (sp?)
Dude looked solid in preseason and I hope we can use him next season. If we had 3 solid RBs to rotate, there’d be no stopping us. I’m on the fence about Cobbs. I like how he plays sometimes, and other times he’s just kinda meh.
And seriously, I’m sick of seeing 15 yard punts, I could punt better than this d-bag. Just shove Camrillo back there for punts, anything would be an upgrade.
we like Jet Blue, we stay hella high
Think he is on

Good post
Why rush Henne? He will have all off season to prepare…..and a few minutes this yr
London looks the part man…he really does….gotta lose that #17 though.
Jason Allen is a nobody. He is done./

are you agreeing with me on Henne?
or questioning me? My biggest reason for getting Henne some series’ this season is to let him start the adjustment to the speed of the game. I don’t want that to be a shock to him come next season. The offseason can’t prepare you for how fast opposing defenses play.

Really good post
the kicking game is killing us as far as field position goes. Seems like on kick offs they are starting consistantly on their 30-40 yard line. Punts aren’t much better. We need to pin them deep and flip the field as far as position goes, and its just not getting done with regularity. I posted on the Henne thing elsewhere. Patience to a point, but the future has to be prepared for.

reminds me of that guy Meggett on the Giants back in the day…..wasnt that his name? lil guy? I bet Parcells thiks the same…he was coach of that team

Well said
Meggett had gamechanging speed though. Cobbs is another guy that doesn’t anything great, but does everything good. He can run a lil bit, catch, blitz pickup, pick up the YAC yards, and contribute in the return game if needed. Seems like we have alot of those kinda guys. Camarillo, London, Roth, Holiday.. Versatility is the way to go in this league.

Meggett
Was one of those shove him in sometimes to give a different look and he will be sucessful kind of guys…
like Meggett though as soon as you start to use him too much he sucks. His talent level isnt high enough to overcome a good LB shadow or simple gameplanning for him. He will continue to shine when used sparingly and I hope thats how we use him.
You know Nicky I was actually in the process of writing up a very similar post to this when I saw yours. I gotta tell ya I appriciate your writing this. Saves me lots of time and hit on most of what I was thinking. Jason Allen MUST be given a chance to do something! We have to know for SURE. This guy has sucked bad and yet has consistantly made plays on the ball (mostly second half last year) that NO ONE ELSE in the secondary has produced. He seems to me to be one of those natural talent guys who just aint as smart as the average player. IF he cant figure it out we need to cut him and be done with it. He reminds me of Terrell Buckley…a guy who would cover good and give you picks 98% of the game but get burned for game winning TD…I cant handle that and if that is what he really ends up like…get rid of him.
Totally agree with you about Brandon London. This guy looks the part and on ST has already shown that he is a gamer. Had several good tackles on Sunday and plays with some fire which is always great to see…if he keeps tackling like this…I say give HIM a shot at corner! LOL
Favorite Brandon London Tidbit of the Year.
During the Chargers game, Phillip Rivers scrambled and ended up by our sideline. Brandon London is over there talkin shit to Rivers, and Rivers fires back with a “Who are you?”
Love it.

re: Jason Allen
Here’s a decent piece on Jason Allen by Omar Kelly (video interview included)…
http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2008/10/jason-allen-unf.html
IMO…the trifecta needs to find out if Jason can step up and play at game speed in the current defensive scheme. Apparently practice speed hasn’t done Jason any favors. Time to fish or cut bait.
yeah but
you would think the game film last year, which was enough to make him the starter during OTA’a and preseason would have been enough to play him over crocker and hill….
there just has to be more about him that no one wants to say…. cause the guy was a net positive last year and during preseason…
maybe the rumors that he’s only one or two steps up the old genetic ladder from being watered twice a week are true…
I don’t know what it is about him, but I really wish the kid would get a fair shake and they’d play him more because when he’s out there he does create turnovers and that’s something that hasn’t existed around these parts since surtain left.

The Jerk
Remember in the movie The Jerk when Steve Martin AKA Navin Johnson discovers his “special purpose?”
when I was watching the Ravens game I was like OMG, Cobbs is AWESOME catching passes out of the backfield, I think it’s his special purpose!
It might not seem like a big deal, run out and catch a short pass, but if it’s so easy, then how come almost no one else is doing it?
They gave him a shot and he grabbed the opportunity, also great fired up energy out there, I love that!

Wasn't everyone anti-Cobbs as the 3rd down back?
When the year started? He did start the year as third down back, didnt he? He does seem to have a knack at getting open. No one can complain about his performance two weeks ago. He also managed to have a decent game last week, too.
Right
we all did. We couldn’t understand why he was playing over Ronnie or Ricky. Lately he’s really stepped up and proven the faith that Sparano has in him.

all im saying is when chad P's time in miami is done
(he cant stay here forever) i think we should give beck a chance before handing the reigns straight off to henne
see what we have in beck before givin henne the franchise
if henne is our franchise QB, one game with beck at Q wont hinder him…it can only HELP
