Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Video Time: Chris Long

As you can see, Saturdays around here during the offseason will likely be for videos. And today, I found a good video of a player who could potentially be the Dolphins' 1st round pick: Chris Long. Long is #91 for Virginia and, as you'll hear the announcers point out, is a defensive lineman who makes a bigtime impact. If you ask me, I think (at this point) I'd rather draft Chris Long over Glenn Dorsey.

Enjoy the video!

Thoughts on Chris Long?

I woudnt...
be opposed to drafting Chris Long with the first pick.  If he is anything like his father, he is going to be one hell of a player.

OL is more important
Everyone could see that the defense couldn't make a stop when it needed to this year, and I think Chris Long would help out tremendously.

However, this is going to be a make or break season for Beck and Teddy Ginn - and Ronnie will need better holes / protection coming back from injury. If we don't protect our young skill players on offense they stand no chance of improving enough to help us win games in the future.

Look, we can spend all the money / picks in the world on either defense or a new QB, but as far as I'm concerned if we don't upgrade the OL we're just throwing our top two draft picks from last year away. And if Beck doesn't succeed, next year we'll have a capable line to slot some veteran quarterback  behind. So it's a no-lose situation, except for the outrageous money we'd have to pay the #1 pick.

So I'm not against Chris Long, but Jake Long is higher on my list at the moment.

Chris Long
Keep in mind that chris long plays in a 3-4 defense and his coach is al groh, and he is from the bill parcells coaching tree also.
Keep in mind that all the talk about our first pick is about Jake Long,Dorsey, and Ryan i believe this is being down to create a possible trade down.

I would rather.....
Go O line than D line, as I agree with the post above. HOWEVER, if we DO go D line, I'll take Long over Dorsey any day. I think he's a quicker, more physially fit player, and Dorsey seems to be mighty injury prone. I just have doubts about Dorsey long term.

I have complete
no interest in this pick. We have a DE and a damn good one. This would be like picking McFadden when we have Brown. Jake Long is our guy. For the love of God fix our OL.
>K?

2 play
Ya, but 2 DE's are on the field at a time making plays, so it's different than 2 RBs.  Only one guy can handle the ball.  Pairing Long with JT would be sweet.  I'm liking any of the 3 big guys, but still looking for a trade down.

Our Defense Must Get Younger BUT

At about 2:45-2:55 on the YouTube tape, an interesting comment about how Chris Long would wear down playing down-after-down (on the inside). But on the outside, I guess he could play down-after-down?  Be careful....

We have DE Mark Roth on the team. And unless the team trades Jason Taylor (which I doubt they will), I do not see the team drafting a DE / DL in the first round, IMO.

The team's linebacking corp must get younger. IMO, the team must draft an Inside Linebacker on DAY-1 to be Zach Thomas' eventual replacement.

Our defense needs to start getting younger, now.

I thought Crowder...
was Zach's replacement. But I guess if we stick with 3-4 D then we'll need another ILB. I think Zach will be traded. Hate to say it, but the vision of him taking away his parking sign at season's end left me with the feeling we'll never see him take another snap with the Phins. I also think Derrick Pope always fills in nicely when injuries occur. We need to keep him in the mix. Not a starter, just in the mix.

What about ....
Drafting Long and playing him as a LB.  You can obviously see he has the athleticism to play the position - no doubt at all about the motor.

Not sure about his 40 times and coverage abilities, but in a 3-4 putting him in a LB slot and letting eventually take over for ZT in a year or so, might be an option.  He is definitely more versatile than Dorsey is and gives you some options.

He reminds me of Tedy Bruschi...  As someone who saw Bruschi play in college at the UA a lot, he had the same kind of motor, was unstoppable as a pass rusher (he was a DL in college and holds records for most sacks and such)...  He's a little bigger than Bruschi, but reminds me A LOT of him in watching film on him at UVA, but similar motor and probably a little too small for the DL.

Something to think about.

Definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

OT Later
I think it would be a good idea to go with Dorsey or Chris Long instead of Jake Long. The OT position is much deeper than d-line and Dolphins could easily get someone with one of their 2nd rounders, a la G.Cherilus.

Screw the Defense
How many years did we have a good defense and couldn't score any damn points because of our sucky offense, that sucked mainly because of our OL? Still people want to try to patchwork the OL with picks in the later in the draft when there is a quality top 3 OT there. Baffles the hell outta me.
>K?

True but
On the other hand, how many years did our offense dominate, but our Def couldn't stop anybody?  WE don't have another Marino to keep us in the games.  Our problem is that we have too many holes to fill.

by Gliddog on Jan 19, 2008 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah,
I saw this game, and it was great to see this guy. He was all over the place.

I agree with "nicholasriehl", if we keep the #1, take Chris, then an O-lineman later. My feeling is that Matt Roth is better coming off the bench.

Again, of the 3 or 4 #1's available, I'd take Chris.........

Underwhelmed
If we're looking for a stud D-lineman to stuff the run and tie up the other team's O-linemen, I just don't see C. Long being that guy.  As others have noted, in this video, his own coach doesn't think he can play that role in the NFL.  According to Groh, Long is a Mike Vrabel kind of guy.  Vrabel, of course, isn't a D-lineman at all.

Don't get me wrong.  Vrabel's terrific at what he does, and I'm willing to believe C. Long would be terrific at it, too.  I'm just wondering if that's really our most pressing need on defense right now.

I'm still of the mind that we should address OL first, and J. Long seems to be the best available.  But if we're going defense first, ISTM it has to be a monstrous tackle, and C. Long just isn't that guy.

by urbino on Jan 19, 2008 3:24 PM EST reply actions

But Dorsey isn't..
...and monstrous tackle. That's the problem.

by Matty I on Jan 19, 2008 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Dorsey?
I've never been on the Dorsey bandwagon.  (Though I readily acknowledge that he does have a bandwagon, and I could well be wrong.)  But USC, Texas, and Auburn all have impressive tackles in this draft. I'm also not convinced that C. Long is going to be as good as others seem to think.  I think his pedigree is getting him more attention than he would otherwise get.

Like I said, I still prefer going OL over any of these guys, anyway.  But if we're going defense with the first pick, I just don't see Long being the guy we need.

by urbino on Jan 19, 2008 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Dorsey...
As of now has not proven he can play NT in a 3-4. If that changes during the senior bowl, scouting combine, or his personal workout that's fine. Until then I can't see us taking him. Chris Long is a great prospect. I'm just not sure I'd draft a 3-4 DE with the 1st pick. If he turns out to be Richard Seymour I can see why people would take him there. I think the best bet besides trading down would be to take Jake Long and move Carey back to RT. I thought Carey played like a pro-bowler in 2006 at RT.
