VICTORY!!!!

After 372 long, long days, the Miami Dolphins have won a regular season football game!!  That's right.  You aren't dreaming.  The Dolphins have one.  In doing so, their 2007 season will soon be forgotten, unlike the '76 Buccaneers.  Sure, it's only one win.  But it keeps this team from infamy.  And following Greg Camarillo's 64 yard touchdown catch in overtime, this team and their fans celebrated like they had just won a Super Bowl.  Even owner Wayne Huizenga shed some tears.  And that's what football is all about.

Let's look at some headlines from Sunday's game:

CAM'S FIRST WIN

All the pressure that had been building up on this team is now gone.  All the tension is gone.  We saw some players embracing coach Cameron on the field and in the locker room.  Jason Taylor and Cam were even seen walking off the field together with their arms around each other.  Then in the locker room, Taylor gave Cameron the game ball.  They say winning cures everything.  My question is if this win will save Cam's job.  Now I don't want to harp too much on this, though.  I do just want to enjoy this week and soak in the victory.  But this is something that we'll have to think about.  Cam's supposed biggest critic, Jason Taylor, showed Cam as much love as we'd ever seen following this victory.  Has Cam changed his mentality?  Could he be looking more towards the veterans for leadership and advice now?  I don't know.  But there is something to be said for a team in the situation that this team was in, and with how the game was unfolding late, to still put forth the kind of effort they did today.

PLAYMAKERS & THE FOOTBALL GODS

This game was seriously a perfect storm of events for the Dolphins.  Their playmakers certainly made some plays in this game.  Jason Taylor had 2 big sacks.  But his biggest play, of course, was the blocked field goal prior to halftime that would have been an absolute killer.  Lorenzo Booker made plays.  And none was bigger than the 4th and 1 option play in the 3rd quarter in which he battled to pick up the first down and set up Samkon Gado's 7 yard TD run on the very next play.  He also made some key catches and, after watching him play the past few weeks, you have to wonder what took so long for Lorenzo to be active on gamedays.

But the football gods were also pulling for the Dolphins on this day.  How else could you explain some of the lucky breaks the Dolphins got.  For example, there's Michael Lehan's interception.  That was a ball that sohuld have been caught by Devard Darling for a 40 yard gain down to Miami's 14 yard line.  Instead, if bounces right out of his arms and into the arms of Lehan.  And, of course, there was the king of all lucky breaks.  Matt Stover had never missed an overtime field goal in his career before missing wide left on the 44 yard attempt on Sunday.  However, I must say that these lucky breaks were looooooong overdue, especially in the kicking game.  How many times have we seen an opposing kicker make 40 or 50+ yard field goals to win the game?  Hell, Kris Brown made 3 50+ yarders in one game this year against us, including the game winning 57 yarder.  So it was about time we got some luck on our side!

RECEIVERS STEP UP

I could have put this under the section above, but I wanted to single out this group of wide receivers, who consistently made plays in the second half.  Marty Booker was huge, especially on their last 2 drives of the 4th quarter.  That's when he caught 4 balls for 55 yards, including a key 3rd and 11 reception to keep that final drive alive.  And I need to again give some credit to Lorenzo Booker, as he had an absolutely critical 3rd down catch on that final regulation drive as well.

But there was no receiver who made bigger plays than that of Greg Camarillo.  He had just one career reception entering this game.  And he leaves this game with 4 career catches.  But that's understating the impact he obviously had on this game.  And we all know about his game winning 64 yard touchdown catch in which he took a slant pattern the distance.  But what about his other 2 catches?  The first was on a 3rd and 7 play, in which Camarillo picked up 24 yards.  That drive would end with Jay Feely's first field goal.  His other reception was on a 3rd and 6 play in which Camarillo gained 21 yards.  That drive would end with Feely's second field goal.  All three of his catches came on 3rd down.  Now that's being a true playmaker.  And who would of thunk it?

DEFENSE BENDS BUT DOESN'T BREAK

Oh boy, this defense.  What can I say about this unit.  All they did today was almost give me multiple heart attacks.  But before we get to the bad, I just wanted to point out something that was an absolute key in this game.  So many times, after this offense does score, we see this defense let the opposing offense march right down for some kind of points.  But today, following Feely's field goal that tied it at 13, we saw this defense actually hold Baltimore to a 3 and out.  That's so critical in these kinds of games.  That allowed Miami to hold onto the momentum and get the offense, which was getting hot, back onto the field.

With that said, how in the world can this defense surrender 345 yards of offense to this team?  Hoe can they let this Ravens' offense convert 50% of their 3rd downs?  And how the hell can they let Troy Smith lead his team down the field with less than 2 minutes left to play?  The Dolphins got very lucky that Brian Billick doesn't have any balls.  Otherwise they would have went for it inside Miami's 1 yard line with 12 seconds left.  I know I would have.  And then to start out the overtime, this Dolphin defense let Willis McGahee, Mike Anderson, and Musa Smith just run the ball down their throats and get into field goal range.  That was disgusting, to be honest.  But hey, with the "W", all is forgotten...for now.

CLEO PLAYS BETTER

With all the drama surrounding Cleo Lemon, you have to hand it to the kid.  He came out, played better than he has all year, and won the ballgame.  And I have much more respect than I ever have for Cleo because he really made some plays late in this game.  However, he still made some dumb mistakes and bad throws.  I saw him miss numerous open receivers on would-be big plays.  And the king of all the stupid mistakes he's ever made was when he decided to run out of bounds for a 7 yard loss with under 8 minutes left to play and the game tied.  All Cleo had to do was throw it away and Miami could have tried a 49 yard field goal.  Instead, Cleo scrambled around and ran out of bounds, forcing the Dolphins to punt.  I was ready to absolutely murder Cleo if Miami ended up losing this game.  But to his credit, he kept his composure and made plays that had to be made.  And I think a lot of that has to do with the offensive line giving him loads of time to throw the ball in the 2nd half.  That was the best protection I had seen from them since before John Beck made his debut about 4 weeks ago.  So kudos to the offensive line!

THIS & THAT

-Jason Allen is still quite bad in pass coverage.  I saw him allow at least 2 big plays because he was out of position.  I like what he does in run support, but I don't know if he'll ever be the kind of player he was thought to be coming out of Tennessee.

-One of the keys was time of possession.  In the 3rd and 4th quarters, the Dolphins held the ball for over 11 minutes...in each quarter.  That's very impressive.

-I was a little disappointed in the lack of involvement of Ted Ginn.  But he did almost have a long touchdown reception, and there should have been a pass interference on that play, as the defender was clearly face guarding.  Oh well.

-Considering how long it took for this team to win, I know one thing for sure:  I will always be sure to appreciate each and every victory.

NOW LET'S GO GET THOSE F*CKING PATRIOTS NEXT WEEK!!!

pressure is OFF next week
now the players can truly concentrate on beating the pats, not putting additional pressure on themselves not going through the season with no wins

it may just be optimism... but i really think we have a shot.

The pats are defeinitely slowing down and getting tired... they have struggled to beat 3 of their last 4 opponents, and the 3 they struggled came against less then steller teams.

with minimal boneheaded mistakes and a solid game plan that sees us attacking brady each and every play... WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!

next week
I certainly think we now have a better shot at winning next week than we did a few days ago.

You gotta believe!!

He called a WHAT???
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-flsphyde17sbdec17,0,4544267.column

"We're wondering what Cameron is thinking. Again. Up 16-13, he ordered a squib kick that put Baltimore in business at its 40-yard line with less than two minutes to play. Sure, the kick went out of bounds.

Blame kicker Jay Feely for that. Still, as Feely said, that's the risk when you, "pooch kick short and it's windy."

Of all the head-scratching calls Cameron has made this year, that one would have been the highlight for aiding and abetting another defeat. He has some strange fascination with squib kicks. Or maybe it's just a fear of his kickoff team."

John Beck
i predict we will see Beck in the 2nd half next week, unless somehow Lemon plays out of his mind and we're within a TD at halftime. And then Beck will start vs Cincy. 100%

I'm gonna try
to refrain from any bashing, especially towards Cameron this week. I'm for one, am gonna soak this one up. Like Matty, I've learned to appreciate each victory all the more.

Please lets just not get out of hand with this victory. Yes it was a nice, powerful moment. First win in over a year, Wayne crying, JT and Cam walking off the field together, Cam getting the game ball, you just gotta imagine the load off their backs, if we felt as good as we did.

The Ravens really insisted that we take this win. The players and the coaches REALLY didn't want go 0-16 and apparently God didn't want them to go winless either.

Let's just not to go the "see", "I told ya", or this will do this or that route when it comes to Cameron's job. Everything came together. Lets see how the team plays out the season, if Wayne still is gona try to sell the team, and how Cam does in the remaning 2 games.

I say keep Cleo in ....
Sorry to go against the seemingly popular choice here but I am all for letting Cleo play at least 6 more quarters. Beck can anyway get the 2nd half of the season's finale.

I am saying this for several reasons:

  • next year, the Phins will need 3 qbs, like every other nfl team. right now they have got: a 3rd string, developmental QB (Beck), a decent 2nd string (Cleo) and NO 1st string, bona-fide starting QB. if you want to fix the Qb situation, you better not start losing the possible replacements.
  • Beck has clearly proved he's not ready to play in the NFL. I'M NOT SAYING HE'S A BUST. I'm just saying, it makes no sense to risk him any further now.
  • Let's not forget Beck did NOT produce a TD drive in the 3+ games he played. Cleo instead gave (some) life to the offense. At this point, 2-14 will look better than 1-15.
  • Given what above, the phins are more likely to receive contribution from Cleo than from Beck, at least in 2008.
That's why I say, give Cleo a shot to bring one more win and to build up experience to be a decent backup qb, which we will need coome 2008. At worst, the Phins can workout a trade for him and giving him a chance to increase his value will not hurt.

He will play
but he shouldn't. Beck needs to be in there to give us a general idea to see what to do in the draft.

How to say this without bashing? We have our 1 win, but with the momentum, might as well take it to NE and see if we can knock off the "Perfect Pats". After winning a game, there is no way Cameron takes Lemon out. I, for one, don't want Lemon back. All he will do is get in the way of Beck's deveolpment. We need to really find a better back-up QB.

Now, with that being said, all of this can change in the next couple games. Maybe everything just clicks for Lemon and he performs out of his mind the last 2 games. If he shows that he "gets it", then he has earned every right to come into next year and be the favorite for the starting job.

This was just one game. Can't we just enjoy the win and the fact that everything finally came together for us?

First Win

Although this was just one game, it was a huge win for Cameron.  Despite a few miscues, the team finally got everything together.

I believe Cameron will likely be back next year - with a short leash.

I definetly saw
things to question in cam's decision making but a win is a win - even if it took 14 games.

You all will have to excuse me for not buying into the idea that cam & the vets (jt, etc) are now BFF. I think as great as the win was, when the fins look up today, they are still the worst team in the league, still 1-13. Although I do believe that everybody, coaches & players, shared the joy and happiness of winning the game genuinely.

I can't see Lemon being taken out. I mean the guy just got the team their first win, and to his credit, he did play well and avoid any turnovers. As much as people want to see Beck, Lemon is a bit more productive QB right now, this moment, today. (Reread the sentence before you throw a fit ok?)

Beck has looked shell shocked during his last 2 starts. Lemon may be at the zenith/peak of his very modest career while Beck may become light years better. Anyway, my point is i see cam sticking with Lemon, at least for now.

About the pats. Did any of you see the weather in that game? They aren't struggling, they are on cruise control. Yesterday they couldn't pass in the wind, so they just ran Maroney up and down against NY. I don't see a game against them as any more winnable than before - although bad weather does keep the score down, which sort of gives you a chance (like our game vs. pitt).

Beck - Lemon
I think we see Cleo for at least another half of football. If he's struggling against New England then maybe Beck comes in. I would imagine Beck starts the Cincy game.
Matt

by Matt27 on Dec 17, 2007 12:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

that would be the smart play
but we are talking Cam here so anything is likely, and based upon past history there is no chance that Beck gets to play in a favorable situation, say the 2nd half against the pats in the middle of a blow out. Cam has worked hard to keep Beck from every being in a situation were he can succeed.

The reality is Cleo will never be a NFL starting QB, and Beck may be one? So who should be playing in the midst of a 1-13 season. If I recall correctly FIVE teams played rookie QBs yesterday with four of them starting, all with the idea of looking forward to the future, is there any reason Miami shouldn't be doing the same?

by W NY Fins Fan on Dec 17, 2007 11:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Man, we get a win...
.. and some folks can't even get off the bash Cam bandwagon long enough for a grin and a cheer.

GRIN :) and CHEER - YAAHOOOOOOOEE!!!!

Cleo will start the NE game short of injury or death. Period. And there is no reason to believe Beck will relieve him short of the same. The man just led his team to its first victory. It was Lemon's 'breakout' game, if you will - his first victory, his best performance. It may well be the infusion of confidence that remarkably improves his play - note the MAY. If he performs reasonably well, there is no reason to believe he will not start the Cincy game as well. If one win feels this great, why not try for two or three.

The original plan was to sit Beck all year anyway. His evaluation by the coaches probably isn't going to be raised or lowered by these last two games, whether he plays or not. That said, my estimation of Beck is that he will intensify his preparation during the offseason and will prove that he is the starting QB and remove all doubt before next season begins.

And I don't think the Dolphins are 'the worst team in the league.' They just have the worst record, the worst luck (until yesterday), a rookie head coach (they all have to start sometime and some great rookie coaches have had miserable seasons and gone on to greatness), a bunch of injuries, and yet, they have never quit playing with all their heart. In my humble estimation, the worst TEAMS in the league are those with the talent to win but the team disintegrates into anything other than a TEAM - an assemblage of individuals who have only their own best interest at heart. We don't have that. We have a TEAM and we can attribute that to Cameron.

I'm taking the day off to really enjoy how good this feels. Did anybody see the moment in the locker room after the game where Cam asked for a show of hands on who wanted to come in to practice Monday? What a feeling!

Dolphins WIN!

Do you have that link?
Matt

by Matt27 on Dec 17, 2007 1:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
... It was one of NFL.com's videos that showed up in the afternoon/evening.

It was the shorter link (1:50) on the home page that showed Camarillo's TD and the celebration that followed including the on field hugs, Wayne tearing up in his box and JT handing the game ball to Cam. I don't know if it's still there.

I just checked ...
... back at NFL.com and the clip has been edited down to 1:18 and the ball presentation and what I mentioned are gone. Cameron meant it as a joke, of course.

Well said ufourya!
I was thinking it and then I read it by you. Excellently said, and very level headed.

And for those who think that a quarterback might be in the future in the 1st round of the draft; forget it! Ain't gonna happen.

I see #1 Beck, #2 Lemon and #3 will be the winner of one late drafted qb (possibly) and 2 or 3 free agents.  Unless Lemon gets traded. Then my statement for #3 moves up to #2.

Personaly, I'd like to see Lemon traded, but I don't know all that's necessary to make this kind of move -- or any other for that matter.

Just my opinion. That's what I like about this site.

Now let's kick some Patriots ass!!!

The CFL and a team coached by Cam.

Lemon
wouldn't just sit back and settle for being a back-up to Beck. I would think he would be in Cam's (if he is back) ear constantly trying to play.

Billick's Call
He's taking a lot of guff for it, but I think Billick made exactly the right call at the end of regulation.  In that situation, the field goal is the right call.  You have to extend the game.  If he goes for it and fails, game over and he gets absolutely eaten alive.  Given the drive that had just taken place, and the fact that Stover is standing there ready to go, there was no reason to think his team wouldn't win once they got it to overtime; but they had to get to overtime.

(And, BTW: we won a game!)

by urbino on Dec 17, 2007 4:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

QB!
The other thing that was great yesterday was Philly beating Dallas.  Dallas is close to a Super Bowl and  I am praying for Jerry Jones to get a hard on for McFadden.  I believe he will trade the world for his boy. Every little set back increases that.

That said, we need to draft QB.  If Beck will be comfortable with the NFL, he will be 28 or 29.  (The same current age as Lemon).  We need to draft a YOUNG QB. The combination of these 3 would be outstanding.

by JGray on Dec 17, 2007 6:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They didn't even try...
to run the ball against Philly, which was weird.  I don't know if it means they didn't think they could -- which would whet Jones's appetite for McFadden -- or if it was just a fluke.

Look at this!!
From the Ravens blog, they are saying this " Miami has a one game winning streak, while the Ravens have the longest losing streak in the entire NFL, which makes it very clear. The Baltimore Ravens are now the obvious choice as the worst team in the NFL!" They have a poll on who is the worst team, i voted for the Dolphins, but we are losing again, Go figure! ;)

They are not taking this loss litely. What do you think if we vote on that poll and make them fell better, by voting for the Dolphins as the worst team?

NOT!! :0

I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(20 years and counting)

by Aleta on Dec 17, 2007 8:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

of course they are
upset. flip it around how happy would you be with your coach after he wimped out like that.

I mean the dolphins in there usual attempt to lose gave the game away. Someone please cut the cord to Cam's mike right before he calls his next squib kick. then the defense does it's usual last drive fold. Instead of rolling out of bounds if the reciever just reaches the ball out it's game over. then billick bails out the fins by impersonating Pat Tie Dye. Then after running the ball down the field in OT, Baltimore gets in FG range and runs the ball into the middle of the pile. Then Yikes, stover misses.

Don't get me wrong - a win is a win, but if you are sitting in Baltimore, it's pretty clear that they just GAVE the game away.

by W NY Fins Fan on Dec 17, 2007 11:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm telling you...
we should all send christmas cards to Baltimore.

25 years ago they were the last team the 72 fins beat to go undefeated in the regular season.

Yesterday they made sure we did not go winless.

The dolphins really didn't want to win the game yesterday, they kept trying to give it away. Except the ravens kept pushing it away like a hot potato.....they practically hit the snooze button in the 2nd half until the last drive, the interception boller threw that bounced off the receivers chest when he fell was vintage blooper roll material...nobody wanted to win yesterday....you take it, no you take it, no no I insist, you take it....

How many more favors can a franchise do you?

by Natalya on Dec 17, 2007 11:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hate saying this
but be careful what we wish for. I was very happy to see the fins win, especially after throwing up my lunch while screaming at capers for the defense folding, as usual, on that last drive.

But with Cincy already mailing it in. I almost assume (yup I'm risking it) that Miami will win that one (lord I hope Cam starts Beck against those guys since he does need a good game under his belt, going into next season)

And if Wayne is still around, I can see him justifing keeping Cam around another year because cough/cough Miami turned the corner at the end. I smell a wanny wammy coming from Wayne. you know the old keep a 'nice' guy trying hard around for 5 years because you like him disaster.

So as happy as I am in my heart to see them win, my brain says getting killed by the pats this week is most likely what's best for the future of the franchise, since it would mean the end of Lemon as a starter and Cam as a coach....

by W NY Fins Fan on Dec 18, 2007 12:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hear you
and know where you are coming from. There's plenty of precedent for it too, that is, the fins putting a few good games together at the end (when they are totally out of it) and then everyone getting hyped up.

Remember when Saban won 6 in a row to finish his first season? I still recall that SI then had miami as their preseason super bowl pick - a season in which the fins would go 6-10.

A win is nice and it ends all the talk of records and 0-16, etc.

Looking at the season as a whole though, this has been a disaster, regression not rebuilding.

I have a feeling that a bad loss at the pats would seal the deal, not just for Lemon, but maybe for Huizenga too.

The final figure for the sale price of the team is just $100M apart between Wayne and the 2 guys who want the club. Best thing for all involved would be for the sale to go through.

it's not about
who is better right now, its about who is better game 8 next season or game 1 2009.

The reality is Cleo is a CFL QB. he has maxed out his god given ability and if it wasn't for Cam he'd already be in winipeg. Sort of like Ray Lucas being out of football once his quarding angel Wanny wasn't around.

SOOOO Beck may have a future, and that future potential is much more promising then cleo's will ever be and the only way the dolphins will be able to determine if he is able to turn that potential into reality is to PLAY him and find out.

I think I calculated that there are 5 teams who started rookie QB's this week to varring success, and each of those teams are jumping ahead of Miami on the QB developement curve. So Cam got his victory, it's time to look to the future of the franchise, even if his is future is as OC in SF.
